Re: Water system use in freezing weather - Advice
rossny@mail.com
Jason, Is your #88 a Super or older Maramu? Is your water heater and water pump in the engine room (SM) or in the lower cockpit locker as my older Maramu? Do you have the Amel "insulation" carpeting glued to the hull in all the lockers that you got mold in? I was planning to add extra insulation to all above water hull areas with a bubble plastic like silver insulation used for ducting, this will trap air in the carpet/hull area against the hull, in your experience will this still grow mold?
Also did you build or do you have a cockpit enclosure with a "door" or is the companionway hatch your outside door and do you insulate that? AND thanks for ALL of your responses... Best Regards, Ross in NYC Maramu #261 1889 |

Hi Eric. I haven't, but you told me about it this Summer. It's on my list of things to get. I had a wrench made for the rudder post packing nut in Norfolk, and wouldn't you know, I had a little leaking for the first time ever on a 25kt/8ft sea downhill run the next time out. A 1/8 turn w my new wrench and its dry again! Thanks again for your hospitality and all your Amel wisdom. Kent On Oct 25, 2015, at 1:35 PM, sailormon kimberlite@... The check valve is to keep a head of water for the impeller to run wet as soon as it starts turning. Just a further precaution… inexpensive too. My mate also told me to order the diverter AND the connector nipples. I asked for the entire kit as per the photo on my mate’s paper article for his Grand Bank maties.. If they ship to the USA I would be interested too (and we can split the shipping cost). I haven't done that myself, Gary, but right after I bought the boat the press-in fit black ?bushing? kept coming out and I had Deltaville Boat Yard grease it. I think the horizontal shaft pulls forward when the bushing is loose, making it so the gears don't mesh properly. I don't think it comes out all the way, and there isn't much room around the shaft that the winch handle goes into for a grease gun to go all the way to the inner gears. But there may be enough room for a narrow hose.
I tried using a ring of tape to hold the bushing in, but that didn't last very long, hence the screws. So far no evidence of corrosion at the screw:mast interface (SS to Al) Kent
Hi Kent:
How is the black piece (we really should invent a part name for this) originally retained? Is it just a press/interference fit? I have long wondered about lubricating this mixzen furling gearbox. If I understand your post, removal of the black piece would allow one to inject some grease into the gearbox, correct?

I am awaiting a reply to my email as we speak. I think that between the Vetus duck bill valve on the intake side plus the “blade catchment gizmo”, I should spend less time faffing around with the Onan.

Hello Gang,
I am installing the following devices on my MDK; a Vetus one way check valve on the raw water intake pipe and a "departed blade trap" gizmo on the line to the exchanger. (made by an Italian company.) This tip came from a mate who owns a Grand Banks and he also encounters "short life itis" on his 12 KW Onan. The device captures the "dearly departed" blades in the trap instead of letting them find their way into the exchanger. He monitors the filter monthly and counts the blades trapped in the filter. When the count reaches 6 blades, he changes his impeller. Sounds like a perfectly reasonable concept and apparently, a large number of GB owners have installed the device. Additionally, he says it catches many other Foreign Objects as well.

I agree about not being exposed to the salty air… For now mine is in a zip lock bag, itself in a Pelican case (with all genset parts), so hopefully this will help a little. About the bending, I don’t know either, but can’t be good, so in the future definitely will do like you (and put the impeller right before usage). Always thanks for your input!!! That is the prime reason for not placing the impeller in the pump, but my second reason has less foundation. I think that the impeller blades bent at such an angle for a long period of time, may "take a set" and the bend becomes somewhat permanent. Again, I am not sure of either thing...but it is what I do. I have spare water pump, and would swap them (quicker than actually changing the impeller). Dec 2014, the water pump started to leak, so I hire someone to teach me to rebuild it. He first showed me how “dirty” was the inside (impeller blades ware build up) (first 2 pictures). To clean: started with small screw driver to carefully remove the big build up, then sand paper (280), then finishing with (800). October 2015: 10 months later. No problem. Preparing for a 3 days crossing in November, I remember a friend’s advice: “schedule your maintenance before your maintenance schedules you”. so I decided to swap the water pump (new impeller). To my surprise the 10 month old impeller still has all its blades and they came back in straight position (still usable - so I kept as a spare) Pictures 3, 4 and 5 are the water pump after 10 months, dirty, then once cleaned. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Onan cooling and impeller life extension
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Alex, I am not really sure, but I think it is better to not expose rubber like parts to salt air until you need to use them. That is the prime reason for not placing the impeller in the pump, but my second reason has less foundation. I think that the impeller blades bent at such an angle for a long period of time, may "take a set" and the bend becomes somewhat permanent. Again, I am not sure of either thing...but it is what I do. Thank you for the compliment Bill!

I really appreciate! Do you think it is a mistake to having the impeller in the ready to use pump? I did not think it is exposed to ambiant air, bent in position, etc. for 10 or 12 months before being used? It is so quick to add that in the future I should just put the impeller when I am going to swap the pump… Thanks for the input Bill! I do not think I get mine that clean. You have set the bar pretty high! I will have to improve. I also have two pumps and swap them as needed. I do not keep a new impeller in the "ready" pump. I vacuum-seal impellers until I am ready to use them. BillBeBe 387 On Sun, Oct 25, 2015 at 1:36 PM, Alexandre Uster von Baar uster@... [amelyachtowners] <amelyachtowners@...> wrote: I love the idea! Definitely a way to maximize the use/life of the impeller! Here is my experience: I had the same problem, after 8 months, the impeller would have lost its blades. Pictures 6, 7, 8 and 9 are the spare water pump. http://nikimat.com/onan_water_pump_cleaning.html Sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Emerald Bay Marina, Great Exumas, Bahamas. -------------------------------------------- On Sun, 10/25/15, jgermain@... Date: Sunday, October 25, 2015, 4:44 AM Hello Gang, I am installing the following devices on my MDK; a Vetus one way check valve on the raw water intake pipe and a "departed blade trap" gizmo on the line to the exchanger. Additionally, he says it catches many other Foreign Objects as well. email is info at Marineelectrics dot itPêche à la Turbine Pêche à la Turbine Qui n’a jamais démonté l’entrée de son échangeur de groupe électrogène pour y récupérer toutes les palettes de la turbine de pompe à eau de mer. Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Thanks, Alex...really good summary and photos. I do not think I get mine that clean. You have set the bar pretty high! I will have to improve. I also have two pumps and swap them as needed. I do not keep a new impeller in the "ready" pump. I vacuum-seal impellers until I am ready to use them. Bill BeBe 387 On Sun, Oct 25, 2015 at 1:36 PM, Alexandre Uster von Baar uster@... Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Engine Problems Amel 54
James,
Diesel engines that fail to fire are most likely fuel related.
Have you tried to see if fuel is coming to the injectors? Open the throttle wide open (in neutral). Loosen an injector nut and crank the engine. If no fuel comes out, work backward long the fuel path and supply.
This are also a pretty silly questions, but have you check the fuel filters (primary and secondary)? Is the vent on the fuel tank clear (will it run with the fuel tank cap removed)?
With best regards,
Mark

Hello all, as a new Amel 54 owner (Phantom - ex Bozo Cinq) I would like to see if anyone out there can give me advice on the Volvo Penta D3-110 engine on my Amel 54. It seems in good condition and has about 2,400 hours on it.
I bought the boat in June and the engine ran well for the 4-day passage from Florida to Maryland. After I arrived in Annapolis it would not start again, and no one has been able to determine the problem since then. It has not started since I arrived, now nearly 4 months, and there are no error codes on the engine display.
I am about at the end of my rope.........
Here's a recap of the history:
I had a local Volvo "dealer" Dick Vosbury look at the engine in mid July, and they told me I had a "bad" fuel pump, since the pump was not pressurizing the common rail. It seemed like a logical answer to the problem, since there were no diagnostic error codes on the displays, and I consulted a local engine shop (Bay Shore) who sent the "defective" pump out to a fuel service shop for evaluation. They came back and said they would have to exchange it, since it could not be serviced (I asked them to test it first, but I think now in hindsight they just replaced it). Anyway, I bought a new one ($1,600 - ouch!) and installed it. I also had them service all the injectors (another $700), since I already had the valve cover off with the injectors removed for inspection.
After putting everything back together with the new pump, I tried to start again - no go - same good crank but no fire. I then called in Seven Seas (another Volvo Penta "dealer") - Vosbury gave up and told me they were too busy to help me again - ever. I think they just wanted to sell me the new pump.
The service guy from Seven Seas has now been here 3 times with no success. The first time, he saw the same pump issue that Vosbury found. The rail is not getting pressurized. He told me I probably had a bad replacement pump, so I sent it back to the testing folks, who in turn sent it to Bosch. Bosch came back telling us the pump is good.
Seven Seas came out again last week and ran some more tests. He again confirmed that the pump is not pressurizing the rail and tested the ECU signal and the MPROP metering valve attached to the pump. The MPROP is showing a de-energized resistance of 20 ohms, whereas the specs call for 2 ohms. He also told me that the ECU is not sending a voltage signal to the MROP to energize while cranking. He then reportedly contacted "Volvo" (whoever they are?) and they suggested it might be a "bad" ECU. There was no answer on the MPROP test.
I initially believed that the ECU might be the issue, as it seems to be not telling the MPROP to energize the pump during crank, but I still do not understand why there are no diagnostic codes reporting a problem. Regardless, I authorized them to get a new ECU (another $4,000), which they did. Yesterday they brought out and installed the new ECU. It made no difference - the engine still will not start, and at this point there are no answers or even clues. Seven Seas told me they would go back to Volvo for more ideas (or more likely experiments).
Frankly, none of these Volvo Penta dealers know much about the engine, and I really feel as if they have been just fishing here. I have spent more that $7K chasing theories from "Volvo." I have never talked with any of these "Volvo" folks and no one will give me a good contact to call. They all say they cannot give out telephone numbers or they will get in trouble. In my opinion what I need is a real Volvo Penta Factory Representative who knows this engine and can fix it for real. No more testing and wild goose chases..........I wish I could get the computer code that the ECU uses to control the engine. Unfortunately, that seems to be top-secret information.
I would surely appreciate any advice anyone out there in Amel Land might be able to give me. I have tried nearly everything and gotten nowhere. I am out of options - and "test" money.
A new engine might have been the right move all along..........
Thanks, Jamie Wendell Amel 54, Phantom |

I love the idea! Definitely a way to maximize the use/life of the impeller!

Here is my experience: I had the same problem, after 8 months, the impeller would have lost its blades. Pictures 6, 7, 8 and 9 are the spare water pump. http://nikimat.com/onan_water_pump_cleaning.html Sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Emerald Bay Marina, Great Exumas, Bahamas. -------------------------------------------- On Sun, 10/25/15, jgermain@... Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] mizzen turns empty
Hi Robin, I would guess it is the gearbox in the mizzen furler. If it is the same as on SM243, you can remove the black plastic piece on the front of the Furler and inspect the gears from there. On Kristy, that plastic piece wants to come out and allows the gears to disengage. I drilled three holes and inserted screws to keep it in place. I haven't removed the gearbox, but doubt it is a difficult project. Assume it's an Amel proprietary part. Kent Sam 243 Kristy On Oct 25, 2015, at 5:45 AM, robin hutter robin.hutter@...
