Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Empty black water tank from the deck plug

Ours is shaped as a cone. Take a broad screwdriver and a piece of wood to protect your hull and to give you a small angel. Gently push to lid upwards with the screwdriver from different locations. The first time is a hard one. It works in the same way as the lid on the hole for the security rudder in top of the aft cabin. /Ann-Sofie S/Y Lady Annila SM 232, 1998 Present at Sicilly Skickat från min iPad 23 aug 2015 kl. 10:37 skrev 'Bill & Judy Rouse' yahoogroups@... Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Fresh Water Pump / expansion tank - IDRO ECOINOX
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Andrew, Pinmar Supply in Barcelona sells this pump. Do you want me to ask them what needs to be replaced if the expansion tank fails? Maybe just the membrane? Bill Rouse
We have an IDRO ECOINOX combined pump and water expansion tank unit installed – we don’t have the standard expansion tank fitted behind the hot water heater. We now have the water pump rapidly cycling when running water – I assume therefore there is a problem with the expansion tank. I wondered if anyone else had this sort of pump installed and had any manuals / tech information on it – We don’t seem to have any in the boat manuals and there is a dearth of information on the internet. I would guess an option might be to fit a standard expansion tank behind the hot water heater but I am not sure of the size and manufacturer of what is fitted as standard in the earlier Amels?
Thanks

Many thanks - very helpful - I am now away from the boat for several weeks but will investigate further on my return.

Accumulator tanks can be purchased any shop that sells water pump systems for home and farm. If I were you, I'd buy one that is 4-6 liters, assuming you can find a place to mount it. Bill Rouse On Aug 23, 2015 4:01 PM, "Bill & Judy Rouse" <yahoogroups@...> wrote:

OK, my mistake...I missed "when running water." The possibilities are no accumulation of pressure because the pressure membrane is leaking, or pressure switch failing. Assuming that you have a pressure gauge and that the pressure when the pump turns off is about 2 bar, turn the breaker OFF, then watch the pressure gauge as you turn on a tap. If you lose pressure immediately, it is the accumulator. Accumulator tanks seem to work best when they are near the source of pressurization, but you should be able to mount one anywhere convenient. The air pressure in the tank should be set to about 90% of the pump cut-off pressure. Bill Rouse On Aug 23, 2015 3:50 PM, "Bill & Judy Rouse" <yahoogroups@...> wrote:

Oh, and I assumed that you looked and could not find any running water from an open tap or line. Bill Rouse On Aug 23, 2015 3:50 PM, "Bill & Judy Rouse" <yahoogroups@...> wrote:

Andrew, All pressurized system water pumps have a one-way valve on the input side of the pump. This allows water into the pump, but keeps it from going back into the tank and the pressurized system loosing pressure. It is very possible that the cycling is caused by trash in the valve holding it open, or by a worn valve. These are normally brass pipe fittings, usually with 1/2" pipe fittings...even the EU pumps. You are either loosing pressure, or you have a bad pressure switch. Pressure switches normally do not fail with on/off charistics, so my guess is that your losing pressure. You can probably test if the one way valve is working by simply removing the input hose. If you get water coming back at you from the pump, it is the valve. These brass one way valves are common to almost any plumbing supplier. Let me know if this helps you. Bill Rouse

Thanks - they are almost fully in but on the mizzen the last batten is so close to the clew that it is out of the mast - will try again paying more attention to tension.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] C Drive shaft seals and wear bearing - don't do what I did
Andrew,
I can't find your original message.. I've had DV Hydranet sails with vertical battens for 2 years and not had any problems with furling them into the masts. The UV protection provided is adequate. After about 5000 miles there is no apparent wear on the batten pockets and the sails are as good as new. The ONLY issue we have had is the attachment of the leech cord at the head of the sail....it would cause the head of the sail to roll over when it was furled. I've since taken their attachment hardware off the head of the sail and sewed the loop of the leech cord end flat onto the head of the sail. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Hi Alan
Thanks - sounds like the membrane as it doesn't cycle unless a tap is switched on.

Re: Fresh Water Pump / expansion tank - IDRO ECOINOX
Hi Andrew,
We don't have an expansion tank behind the hot water cylinder, just the one on the fresh water pump. My experience if the pump is cycling on and off is 1. there's a leak somewhere causing the pressure to drop 2. the membrane in the pressure vessel is ruptured and the whole system is full of water - replace the membrane. 3. least likely, the pressure switch is faulty.... Hope that might help Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Re: Empty black water tank from the deck plug
Paul,
Do you have a black deck plug ? If so, it will only be stuck, lever it out around the edge, it will come...there's nothing holding it in except friction. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Paul, I believe that there are several types of black water access ports on SM's. BeBe 387 simply unscrews and the piece that you unscrew looks similar to the fuel or water ports. Maybe a photo of what you have is needed.

I have always enjoyed Potter Cove on the east side of Prudence Island. The ASM is too big to go into the cove, so anchor just south of the cove entrance in thick mud bottom. Or pick up a transient mooring in Bristol Harbor and visit the Americas Cup / Herreshoff Museum and dine at Quito's. Best, Mark Sabbatical III (Turkey)
