Lots of good yards. If your in Solomon Island Zahnisers and is walking distance to everything. Going North, I like Hartge Yacht Harbor in Galesville, reasonable and picturesque, not close to much, but I can help with transportation. Also North is Herrington Harbor North, which has a West marine store onsite, plus a pool, but could be pricey. Hopefully you have a free “Port Book” and Chesapeake cruising guide to help you. ONE BIG CONCERN. Most do not sand the bottom before applying paint. Adhesion is limited. Just ask Kent. Secondly most of the paint used is frankly little better than house paint (again EPA and Maryland’s regulations on Marinas.) Most marinas don’t permit a diver to clean the bottom at the slip. However if you lose something overboard ------ Ric – Hartge Yacht Yard- Galesville Bali Hai SN24

Hi all,
Besides Deltaville Boatyard, does anyone have a recommendation for a boat yard on the Chesapeake (any location south of Annapolis is preferable).
We are needing bottom paint and the routine Amel maintenance. I would also like to oversee or do the Amel maintenance myself and wax the hull.
Thanks!
With best regards,

JP, Some great products are from companies that make some other not-so-great products. CorrosionX is my friend. I reject REJEX. I had a collector car and used Rejex (same company as Corrosion X) and after use, I never won “concourse” until I spent days polishing and building wax from another company. :-) Jean-Pierre SY Eleuthera, SM 007

Polish everything... the hull, the deck (all smooth gelcoat) and stainless as well. Find someone who specializes in polishing. You will be happy...oh, and don't let them use Teflon polish...the issue is that you can't really polish (xompound) fiberglass gelcoat or paint after Teflon has been applied. Hi to Cindy! Bill Rouse

Giani,
Maybe you have a different windlass than BeBe 387. I have a Lofranz Tigres 1200 watt windlass. The parts list the motor as 00418b Electric motor 1200W 24V. There is not a separate parts listing for brushes. Let me know if you need anything else. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Lofrans Tigre Windlass intermittently unresponsive to helm or unit switches.

Pat, yes it is normal for the ratchet to release in the down position if the chain gets blocked or jammed. Operate the windlass with the hand lever, pumping back and forth and the ratchet operation will be apparent. And I believe this will happen with new chain almost all of the time until ALL OF IT has run through the windlass 10 - 20 times. Trevor, you are describing the manual release and clutch on the Lofranz. By loosening the three prong nut you can let the anchor and chain free-fall. The only problem is that your chain counter will not count, but other than that it is fine. There is a cone clutch (metal-to-metal that tightens when the three prong nut is tightened. The cone faces should be greased once a year so that in the event something bad happens your windlass will not get pulled loose from its mount on the deck...and the three prong nut should not be over-tightened. If this cone does not slip and/or the three prong is over-tightened, you will ruin the keyway in the gypsy assembly which will cost you a minimum of 300 euros. I know a lot of people find it hard to believe that the cone should be greased. If you have any doubts, read the owners manual. I hope this helps, Bill BeBe 387 On Fri, Aug 28, 2015 at 4:39 PM, seafeverofcuan@... [amelyachtowners] <amelyachtowners@...> wrote:

Bill,
Would you include checking and tightening the three eared nut on the the Lofrans as another possible cause go the chain not raising or lowering? Best regards, Trevor |

Bill, I do have new chain and the chain falls over on itself while heeled over ,and a few times I have had to open the locker to free it. So it is normal that in the down operation the windlass is not expected to have much pulling power ? Thanks Pat

Pat,
Yes, and Yes, I know the cause.
First of all, the clicking sound is the built-in ratchet on your windlass that allows the Lofranz handle on the winch to manually raise the anchor. Without the ratchet you could not pump the handle back and forth and raise the chain. If you have never tried this, do it now.
Your issue is normally caused when you buy new chain, or the chain is not laying correctly when it is retrieved. The new zinc on the NEW chain links sometimes causes a binding of the links resulting in jamming either at the chain hawse opening, or on the gypsy. The solution is
carefully pull on the chain as another crew member operates the down button on the gypsy. After you run all of the NEW chain through the gypsy about 10 - 20 times, the jamming will go away.
Other causes of jamming can be rusted chain, or something causing the chain pile to fall on itself weighing down the chain. If your chain is not NEW, look inside the watertight chain port as someone else operates the windlass...I suspect you will see what is going on.
Which of the above do you think you have?
Bill

I have a slightly different problem, when I push the down button the windlass makes a clicking sound but the gypsy does not rotate and leave out chain. If there is weight on the chain , like the anchor dangling over the bow then the gypsy rotates leaving out chain. Has anyone experienced this and know what causes it.
Thanks , Pat SM #123

I have had exactly that problem, the culprit appeared to be carbon dust from the motor brushes (there are four) which either stopped the windlass from working, or alternatively
caused the chain to run away.
Once I cleaned it up and also checked and cleaned the conniptions as Bill describes it all ran normally .

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Furuno VHF FM2721
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Drew, I had a Thrane and Thrane Sailor VHF that I continually had to replace the handset wire for $125 Euro each. I complained to the USA VP Sales with Thrane and Thrane who replaced it with a Sailor 6216 VHF DSC. I mounted it on a block of wood 4"X4"X9" just inside the passage way on the Starboard side. The block of wood fits inside that shelf. I had to buy some antenna wire barrel connectors and a 3 meter piece of antenna wire. The rest was fairly straightforward. I mounted a small external speaker to the left of the wind and speed instruments by attached the bracket to the underside of the piece of wood that shades the instruments. This VHF is very good and very clear, but I do not have first hand comparison knowledge of the 6216 with any other VHF. Drew, It is surely the anchor control box which is mounted on the reverse side of where the breaker and switch for the bow thruster and windlass is...which is inside the most forward cabinet on the port side. There is a convenient Amel Thumb Nut which removes the board for access and long enough pigtails to easily work on this. Inside the control box are two solenoids one for up and the other down. The contacts are likely burnt from use and you need to replace the entire box. Try to find a Lofrans control box because it will mount much easier to mount...you will see why. An emergency repair can sometimes be done by cleaning the solenoid contacts, but this is not recommended as those contacts might stick and you will have a run-away anchor. We just installed a new keel cooled refrigerator with drawers. After a month of use, we are very pleased with it. It draws little “juice” and cools very well even in water temps above 29C and has much more efficient use of its volume. It fits into the space with few modifications. However, like anything, there are compromises… being keel cooled means another through hull fitting and the remote compressor impinges on the adjoining cabinet. Ours is the Frigoboat 135 liter version. I would think Mr Henri would have considered such a compromise… Cheers, Jean-Pierre Germain, SY Eleuthera, SM007

I went or The Standard Horizon 2200. DSC with incorporated AIS and the ability to buy an optional remote for the cockpit. 2 features I like are the PA function which allows verbal comms with deck crew and the FOG horn which emits a selectable signal based on the conditions of the moment. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Furuno VHF FM2721
Hi Drew, I replaced mine 7 years ago with the iCOM IC-M604 marine VHF and added a remote mic at the helm. I mounted it sideways where the old VHF was mounted. It's one of the earlier digital calling ones, but I haven't found a need for that feature. I have heard the SCREECH it puts out a couple times when someone puts out an emergency TX...it's enough to wake the dead, and it gives you their GPS coordinates. If I ever wanted to get another boat's attention, there's no way they could ignore that alarm. The radio's been flawless. Lofrans Tigre Windlass intermittently unresponsive to helm or unit switches.
Gaffney, Drew <drew.gaffney@...>
Our windlass begun failing to respond to either the helm panel joystick or the buttons on the windlass itself. I've changed windlass buttons several times, but in those cases, one button failed, but the other worked and the helm-station control was not affected.
Power is getting to the control box, but it appears that nothing is coming out. I assume that this box is the 'common final pathway for activation with either set of switches. Has anyone had a similar problem with neither pair of switches working? Has anyone replaced the control box? What were it's failure symptoms? Where was the replacement purchased. I will check Imtra tomorrow. I've not found this topic on the UserGroup web site, but searching isn't always fruitful. Feel free to refer me to previous messages. Thank you.
