Jeff,

I use nothing on the prop.

I just have it dived every 3 weeks along with having the bottom cleaned.

Eric,

That's the way I'm going with it.

BTW...my prop looked fine too.

As the zinc wears it becomes loose and causes vibrations on the shaft. I also ordered one from AB marine in Massachusetts and that is what I encountered. So unless you want to dive on the prop from time to time and tighten it. I would skip it.

As you recall my prop is fine after 13 years. I think you would be better off with a guppy over the side

While servicing the autoprop, I noticed that the manufacturer calls for a zinc, located where the plastic end cap is.

Instructions provided by Amel (off the site I believe) show removal of the PLASTIC end cap, with no mention of a zinc.

The marina manager is familiar with autoprops, and says that a zinc is needed there. He's ordering one, so it must fit in. The zince shown looks just like the end cap.

Duane,

The bowman is original equipment.

I would call the company in Massachusetts- I believe they are the distributors direct from Bowman.

What is a bowman HEX?

Eric,

I measured the heat exchanger (the best I could at least) and it seems to be spot on to the DC60 Bowman.  Did you know if it was the original equipment, or did you just search until you found it?

I'm hopeful that I can find one in stock tomorrow.  Trans Atlantic Diesel claims to have all Bowman HEX in stock.

Thanks again, (and I owe you a beer!)

Hi Jeff

Thanks for letting me know. Since I will be doing my bottom in a few weeks too, I am most interested to hear the combined wisdom of the group on this topic too.

I was told propspeed wasn't good if your boat will sit for any extended periods. The coating that was on it was a clear coat. It felt somewhat waxy.

All this advice is spot on, as usual on this site. Same thing happened to us. Simply replace the cooler and make sure you put double clamps on the hoses and immediately after do at least 3 successive sets of gearbox oil replacements ensuring that you get all the oil out each time, to ensure no water/dampness in there which could cause future rust. With this job done you, you and Peggy can have peace of mind, at least for another 10 years, without the same problem re-surfacing. Think of that as a positive that it is now done where you can get replacements nearby.

Interestingly in our case we discovered this after a long motor sail, when coming into an anchorage, we engaged neutral gear when dropping anchor, and then when we tried to engage reverse to set the anchor there was no drive. We then tried forward gear, and the same thing occurred. This was because of the frothing/foam sponginess in the gearbox and it being therefore unable to push into either gear. It will engage once cooled down - ie the next day - which was lucky in our case as we have a 3 mile narrow and busy channel run to our berth which we did the next morning without daring to disengage from forward gear at all for fear of not having any drive to get home safely. I mention this just in case any others suddenly find no drive ..... immediately check the colour of your gearbox oil!

We're new Amel owners, and on our first outing the transmission (ZF Hurth Model ZF25-2.8) lost it's oil.  I'm a far cry from a mechanic but it appears there is a leak based on the small puddle of oil under the unit.  There is no oil in the reservoir for the dipstick and there is some white froth on the dipstick.  The oil is only on the deck and not much of that really, so it wasn't a high pressure side leak. If anyone has suffered through this would you please relate to me what your problem was so I could be better informed?  I plan on calling a repair facility on Monday, there are several Factory Authorized service centers here in West Palm Beach Florida.

Peggy was heartbroken over this, though she seems in better spirits today.  I'm hopeful that she will trust the boat again.

The electrode goes in the water. It
connects to the neg electrode on your multimeter. The pos
electrode on the multimeter is then placed on different
equipment which is exposed to sea water (engine, CDrive,
Generator, thru-hulls, etc) they should all read the same if
properly
bonded.KentSM243Kristy

Good afternoon Derrick,

Could you please give me more detail on how to test the

So one wire of the volt meter has to go on the anodes of the

water?

Then where do you connect the other wire? Could you please
give some example?

Thanks in advance,

The electrode goes in the water. It connects to the neg electrode on your multimeter. The pos electrode on the multimeter is then placed on different equipment which is exposed to sea water (engine, CDrive, Generator, thru-hulls, etc) they should all read the same if properly bonded.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] autoprop zinc

Amen, Joel!  I also bought a silver reference electrode.  After all the things I found that were not the Amel way we're made right (I have to admit I didn't really have a clue, and several changes had been made before I bought the boat), I checked when we got back in the water.  I read a perfect -930mv.
It's going to take some experimentation in different conditions (brackish, fresh water, and water flow make a difference in the readings you get...I read -877mv on the dock in Savannah) to really understand it, but I think it's worth the $120 or so for peace of mind.

The recent, 1989 onward, Amel boats are designed not to need a zinc on the prop. Again, this is by design. Jeff, ask the marina manager if he knows about the Amel  D.C. electrical system. Ask him if he knows it is a full floating/full return system. Ask him if he knows that the entire driveline is isolated from everything else electrical when it is not in use. He is unfamiliar and bound to lead you astray.

I harp and preach on this all the time, to my own detriment. Nobody likes to be scolded and most of us do not appreciate being told what to do. When it comes to your Amel, don’t guess. Make sure you are absolutely certain that any change you make, no matter how small, is the right thing to do. There is more than enough wide ranging expertise on this site that we are blessed to be able to rely on. Use it. Be careful. Question change, it is not always your friend.

Kent’s boat is a special case. The original owners subjected it to some tribulations which compromised the entire drive line. When Kent paid good money to have the boat repowered, the folks who did it didn’t think much of the electrical isolation system on the original motor so they did not re-install and neglected to make any mention to Kent. Not Kent’s fault, but he sure has paid for it in money and precious time.

This kind of thing happens all the time, it is called ’the not invented here syndrome’. If a tradesman doesn’t recognize something or is unfamiliar, it can’t possibly be any good until he changes it back to what HE is familiar with. Again, it happens all the time. I am sure Olivier Beaute can tell you even more stories about Amel boats he has surveyed that were ‘improved’ so poorly that they  more than mildly dangerous. Having sold hundreds of second hand Amel’s, several many times over, I have seen things that make me want to put my head in my hands…

Think. Question. Resist advice from people not deeply familiar with your boat. Derick, good for you on getting a silver ref electrode. This is the best way to be sure.

I’ll step off my soap box now…

Have fun with your Amel boats everybody!

Re: Sharki bow thruster leaking

I took my bow thruster apart again. Cleaned once more and it apears that the white housing around the seal has a minor crack, well actually 2 cracks directly opposite each other. The shaft too looks to be very worn.  I'm wondering if Amel has replacement parts for them.

I'll post some new pictures in the Sharki Bow thruster folder tomorrow.

Jeff,

I had the change done by EMEK Main in Turkey so I can’t describe the detail of the seal.

The Sidepower bowthruster is a popular unit, and the manager at the boatyard expects to be able to get them.
BTW, have you replaced the seals on your thruster yet?
If so, could you describe briefly , the process if you can.
It appears there is a wearing seal (similar to a shaft seal) that is housed inside the base where the shaft goes through the hull.
This seal appears to be fine. Considering that the shaft only goes up and down through this seal very rarely, I can't see how it wears much at all, and I've decided to leave it.
The donut seals that Amel sells seem to be a secondary seal. I don't think, looking at the condition of the current one, and considering that the thruster didn't leak at all, I wonder if it acts more as a cushion between the bottom of the thruster unit, and the top of the area where the main shaft seal is.
Anyone with a 54 please fell free to chime in on the seal changing process, and the seals themselves.

 Only needed to
connect the electrode to my volt meter, put it over the side
near the rudder zincs, and then run a long wire ending in an
alligator clip  from the volt meter to where I wanted to
test on the bonding system.

Re: Amel logo - high quality vector drawing?

Ian Park

I have just replaced the logos on the side of my Santorin.
I took a photo of each side and then traced the logo and letters on A4 paper. The old stickers stand out enough to do this easily. I took them to a sign maker who put them up on a computer screen, chose the colours and he printed them in stick on vinyl/plastic.
Cheap enough and has survived an Atlantic crossing and a Caribbean season!

Hi Andy.
How soon? Where is your boat?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] autoprop zinc

amelforme
