A few

years ago my hose failed at the input to the membranes,
that

was "repaired" by Ray Eaton, and the next time

out, it failed at the pump. I bought a hydraulic hose

replacement at a local shop in Abacos, Bahamas for $75.
I

ordered two replacements from Charleston Rubber and
Gasket

) with food-grade hoses and stainless fittings for $35
each

(plus shipping). Sorry, I'm not on the boat so I

don't have the fitting sizes, but I know they are
metric

and "standard" thread. The threads are the
same

on both ends of the high pressure hose and output hose
going

from the membranes to the panel in the galley.You can

probably get Mark at Great Waters Marine Systems (the US

Dessalator guy) in Massachusetts to tell you the fitting

size...he's very accomodating. I should be back on
the

boat next week, I'll post the fitting sizes/threads

In my case the hose failed near the fitting attached to
the

CAT 277 pump.



It spread water up to the ceiling.







I would guess the hose that failed were the one before
the

membranes (because of the higher pressure).







To me it looks like there is a lots of vibrations from
this

pump. So I installed the new hose will less of a
bent/turn.





I think it would be wise to install some type of device
so

that in case of failure the water is not spread on the
water

chargers, etc.



Possibly a larger hose just sitting that would redirect
the

water in a less critical area.







Also, in my case it seems that when the 24 volt electric

motor is on for the water maker, the 220 volt is also

turning. I don't think it should.



How could I solve this issue? Part to change? Or
clean?

A few

years ago my hose failed at the input to the membranes,
that

was "repaired" by Ray Eaton, and the next time

out, it failed at the pump.  I bought a hydraulic hose

replacement at a local shop in Abacos, Bahamas for $75. 
I

ordered two replacements from Charleston Rubber and
Gasket

(http://www.chasragco.com/product.aspx?catid=87

) with food-grade hoses and stainless fittings for $35
each

(plus shipping).  Sorry, I'm not on the boat so I

don't have the fitting sizes, but I know they are
metric

and "standard" thread.  The threads are the
same

on both ends of the high pressure hose and output hose
going

from the membranes to the panel in the galley.You can

probably get Mark at Great Waters Marine Systems (the US

Dessalator guy) in Massachusetts to tell you the fitting

size...he's very accomodating.  I should be back on
the

boat next week, I'll post the fitting sizes/threads

In my case the hose failed near the fitting attached to
the

CAT 277 pump.



It spread water up to the ceiling.







I would guess the hose that failed were the one before
the

membranes (because of the higher pressure).







To me it looks like there is a lots of vibrations from
this

pump. So I installed the new hose will less of a
bent/turn.





I think it would be wise to install some type of device
so

that in case of failure the water is not spread on the
water

chargers, etc.



Possibly a larger hose just sitting that would redirect
the

water in a less critical area.







Also, in my case it seems that when the 24 volt electric

motor is on for the water maker, the 220 volt is also

turning. I don't think it should.



How could I solve this issue? Part to change? Or
clean?

A few
years ago my hose failed at the input to the membranes, that
was "repaired" by Ray Eaton, and the next time
out, it failed at the pump.  I bought a hydraulic hose
replacement at a local shop in Abacos, Bahamas for $75.  I
ordered two replacements from Charleston Rubber and Gasket
(http://www.chasragco.com/product.aspx?catid=87
) with food-grade hoses and stainless fittings for $35 each
(plus shipping).  Sorry, I'm not on the boat so I
don't have the fitting sizes, but I know they are metric
and "standard" thread.  The threads are the same
on both ends of the high pressure hose and output hose going
from the membranes to the panel in the galley.You can
probably get Mark at Great Waters Marine Systems (the US
Dessalator guy) in Massachusetts to tell you the fitting
size...he's very accomodating.  I should be back on the
boat next week, I'll post the fitting sizes/threads

In my case the hose failed near the fitting attached to the
CAT 277 pump.

It spread water up to the ceiling.



I would guess the hose that failed were the one before the
membranes (because of the higher pressure).



To me it looks like there is a lots of vibrations from this
pump. So I installed the new hose will less of a bent/turn.


I think it would be wise to install some type of device so
that in case of failure the water is not spread on the water
chargers, etc.

Possibly a larger hose just sitting that would redirect the
water in a less critical area.



Also, in my case it seems that when the 24 volt electric
motor is on for the water maker, the 220 volt is also
turning. I don't think it should.

How could I solve this issue? Part to change? Or clean?

As I wrote, I purchased my spare high pressure hoses from Mark at Great Water. I am very happy with his service and recommendations but
I thought they were very expensive… $90 for each fitting, so over $400 for 2 hoses and $100 shipping from France…
I also bought the Oring kit for HP pump 277 from him at a price of $461… since later on I found that same kit for less than $100 I was hoping to find the hose for less…

A few
years ago my hose failed at the input to the membranes, that
was "repaired" by Ray Eaton, and the next time
out, it failed at the pump.  I bought a hydraulic hose
replacement at a local shop in Abacos, Bahamas for $75.  I
ordered two replacements from Charleston Rubber and Gasket
(http://www.chasragco.com/product.aspx?catid=87
) with food-grade hoses and stainless fittings for $35 each
(plus shipping).  Sorry, I'm not on the boat so I
don't have the fitting sizes, but I know they are metric
and "standard" thread.  The threads are the same
on both ends of the high pressure hose and output hose going
from the membranes to the panel in the galley.You can
probably get Mark at Great Waters Marine Systems (the US
Dessalator guy) in Massachusetts to tell you the fitting
size...he's very accomodating.  I should be back on the
boat next week, I'll post the fitting sizes/threads

In my case the hose failed near the fitting attached to the
CAT 277 pump.

It spread water up to the ceiling.



I would guess the hose that failed were the one before the
membranes (because of the higher pressure).



To me it looks like there is a lots of vibrations from this
pump. So I installed the new hose will less of a bent/turn.


I think it would be wise to install some type of device so
that in case of failure the water is not spread on the water
chargers, etc.

Possibly a larger hose just sitting that would redirect the
water in a less critical area.



Also, in my case it seems that when the 24 volt electric
motor is on for the water maker, the 220 volt is also
turning. I don't think it should.

How could I solve this issue? Part to change? Or clean?

I really don't like the fittings on the original hoses...The replacements I bought should last a decade or more and don't depend on the (I think) questionable fittings on the originals.

      I have seen two SM's where the hoses failed on passage. The result was catastrophic.
The Cat pump kept working away sprayed salt water everywhere but destroyed the battery chargers completely.
Dessalinator are outrageous with their prices. They quoted me Euros 550 plus  vat and shipping three years ago for new hoses.
I had them made up in Ireland, albeit the fittings were mild steel in a hydraulic shop for Euros 70 the pair.

A few years ago my hose failed at the input to the membranes, that was "repaired" by Ray Eaton, and the next time out, it failed at the pump.  I bought a hydraulic hose replacement at a local shop in Abacos, Bahamas for $75.  I ordered two replacements from Charleston Rubber and Gasket (http://www.chasragco.com/product.aspx?catid=87 ) with food-grade hoses and stainless fittings for $35 each (plus shipping).  Sorry, I'm not on the boat so I don't have the fitting sizes, but I know they are metric and "standard" thread.  The threads are the same on both ends of the high pressure hose and output hose going from the membranes to the panel in the galley.
You can probably get Mark at Great Waters Marine Systems (the US Dessalator guy) in Massachusetts to tell you the fitting size...he's very accomodating.  I should be back on the boat next week, I'll post the fitting sizes/threads then.

In my case the hose failed near the fitting attached to the CAT 277 pump.
It spread water up to the ceiling.

I would guess the hose that failed were the one before the membranes (because of the higher pressure).

To me it looks like there is a lots of vibrations from this pump. So I installed the new hose will less of a bent/turn.
I think it would be wise to install some type of device so that in case of failure the water is not spread on the water chargers, etc.
Possibly a larger hose just sitting that would redirect the water in a less critical area.

Also, in my case it seems that when the 24 volt electric motor is on for the water maker, the 220 volt is also turning. I don't think it should.
How could I solve this issue? Part to change? Or clean?

This year I changed over to Copper Coat. It was alot of work to remove the old paint, add a new barrier coat for a clean surface, then paint 4 coats of CopperCoat to my sharki's bottom.
Though she has only been iin the water for two months it's lookin pretty darn good.

hose with just simple tools.

dependent on use, but age
only.

I am due for replacement and hope to get

Bill,
      I have seen two SM's where the hoses failed on passage. The result was catastrophic.
The Cat pump kept working away sprayed salt water everywhere but destroyed the battery chargers completely.
Dessalinator are outrageous with their prices. They quoted me Euros 550 plus  vat and shipping three years ago for new hoses.
I had them made up in Ireland, albeit the fittings were mild steel in a hydraulic shop for Euros 70 the pair.

hoses. The ends come off and you can install them on new
hose with just simple tools.
My experience and my
experience in this group tells me these have about a 5 year
life as long as they are not exposed to caustic chemicals,
overuse of pickling chemicals, or petroleum products. This life is not
dependent on use, but age
only.
If you happen to go over five
years, the salt water spewing in your engine compartment can
be very destructive.

on BeBe is marked: ZEC VE740000 SAE  100 R7
5/16" Made in Italy 
I am due for replacement and hope to get
some soon.
In my case I figure
5 meters is plenty.

Andrew and Bill,

The PO had the "Oceoprotec" system applied to Brava in the summer of 2011 while in Turkey. He then had it "touched up" in a couple of places on the keel in 2012 (under warranty) when he got to Guadeloupe.  His experience, as confirmed by me for the last two years, is that there is only mossy growth that can be easily scrubbed off underwater, or by pressure washing during haulout.  No barnacles or hard growths, except in hard-to-access places like between the rudder and the skeg where the coating may have been less successfully applied.  There is also a light dusting of crumbly calcifications that are easily brushed off.

The Oceoprotec system is also particulate copper suspended in epoxy resin.  After five years with no further anti-fouling applications I would have to say I am pleased with the result.   The original copper color has turned to a pleasant green-black over time.

I am told that the PO paid approximately 8,000 euro for the Oceoprotec system installation, which included removal of old anti fouling, several layers of epoxy undercoat, and then three layers of the copper/epoxy resin.

I'll keep you posted on how long it lasts.  It was waranteed for 5 years.

Good morning Bill & Derick,

I had the same problem.
If the battery charger was ON (from shore power or genset) the fresh water pump would recycle quickly.
If OFF then the fresh water pump would stay on for longer and I switch it off on the 24 volt panel.
I cleaned it like I had done before didn’t solve the issue.

About a month ago, I did like Bill just described: Lower the pressure and now I no longer have the problem.
I am happy with the result as it solved the problem, but I think I only treated the symptoms and not the cause. Checking each battery is next on my list.

Derick,
Have you load checked your house batteries? My
guess is that one or more batteries could be bad.
The way the pressure switch works is it cuts
off the electric motor by mechanically breaking the positive
and negative connection to the motor when the desired (owner
set) pressure is met by the pump. It is a DC motor, so it
will turn slower with low voltage, so that could account for
running continuously.
You can lower the desired pressure by taking
off the cover of the square D pressure switch and unscrewing
the larger of the two adjustment nuts. If I were you, I
would back off one complete turn to see if that helps. Try
one turn at a time, but not more than three turns. If it
does not help return the adjustment to its original
position.
The pressure switch can get dirty inside the
pressure orfice. You can see this and clean it with QTips,
by removing the switch. Read my recent posting in the photo
section on how to remove. Reassemble with really good thread
dope and thread tape. Be careful with the small brass pipe
fitting between the vertical bronze pipe and the pressure
switch. It is possible to screw this fitting into the bronze
pipe too far, and/or strip the threads in the bronze pipe.

Congratulations for taking Ronpische out this weekend !!!




Regarding the furling of the main and the mizzen. Were you
able to furl them properly before? (on the sails without the
battens).


Are you putting enough tension on the outhaul when furling
in?

When I furl the main: I switch ON the furling motor and go
ON and OFF (every 1/3 of second) the outhaul switch to make
sure the sail is furling tight.


For the Mizzen, I have the outhaul over the winch and hold
it with my feet (to create back tension) while I roll the
sail with the handle.

We took our SM out last weekend

for the first time this year  since fitting new hydranet

vertical batten sails, removing ten years of old

antifouling, overhauling

the engine and propeller,  she sailed very nicely in
light

winds – difficult for us to compare though as our last

sails were near end of life when we purchased the

boat.

 

This year we scraped the hull back

to the gelcoat and (close your ears Bill!) applied

Coppercoat– with two of us working pretty hard, the
whole

process took about

2 weeks - we scraped 10 years of antifouling off with

tungsten carbide bladed scrapers (we bought 4 different

types of scrapers only the Bahco 665 scrapers were any
good

- fortunately we bought two of each type)  – the
scraping

took 6 days, sanding the primer

took 2 days back to gelcoat, 3 coats of 3M GP120 epoxy
took

2 days and the Coppercoat epoxy took 1 day + extra days

after the boat was repositioned, for the rest of the keel

and pads. We had the engine injectors changed earlier in
the

year and I overhauled

the Autoprop while waiting for the epoxy coats to dry.



 

I have to say though that we do

not seem at the moment to be able to get the main and
mizzen

sails rolled in such that only the UV strip is showing
which

is a

bit disappointing.

 

With this work also the engine

 (Yanmar 110HP)  was able to reach 3500+ revs easily.

Leinster Bay on St. John is one of my favorite spots. We

will be crossing the Atlantic this coming Jan and hope to
be

there next year.



I never say, "I told you so." Now that your

sails are at about half life, what do you think of the

verticle battens on a SM? Was it worth it? Or, do you
think

your performace increase was a result of hydranet....oh,
and

what about the shape of hydranet....it

is not supposed to stretch at all, and at seven years

Dacron would likely be showing a little belly.

get the halyard down to deck level by using the "two

bowline" technique to attach the line extension and

then sending someone up the mast.  The thin line was
indeed

attached to a swivel on the foil, with

a long black pin sticking through the slot in the mast. 

Found no damage, the previous rigger's knots had just

come undone.  Tied it back up with multiple loops
through

the fabric loop at the head of the sail using bowlines

instead of half hitches, leaving

about 4 inches between the head of the sail and the

swivel.  With this length, the luff could still be
properly

tensioned (I would not use more length than 4 inches).

 





 





I took advantage of the mainsail

being down to sew up some rather frayed vertical batten

pockets (Bill Rouse can say "I told you so"
about

using vertical battens).  The sails are Hydranet and
about

7 years old,

and except for the wear on the batten pockets seem to be
in

very good shape.







 





All is now back to normal.
