Bill,
If you haven't already got an Amel Manual on board, it would really be a great help if you acquired a CD in English of same, which will describe all the operating procedures and ongoing maintenance requirements. Trevor Seafever of Cuan SM425 Redline Mexico For Sale

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] message from delivery captain input
Olivier Beaute
Hello William, Bill and Trevor, concerning the genoa furler, the captain is right. Under the pulley that bears the pin, an aluminum disc receives the pin. It is attached to the aluminum drive shaft thanks to 3 machine screws, ALLEN heads. These screws can either shear or come off. When sheared, they have to be replaced and put into new tapped holes made in the aluminum shaft. This means the pulley has to be removed from the stainless steel hub (which is sometimes tricky and may require an hydraulic pusher/puller) to give access to the shaft and disc. Bill and Trevor, you don't see what the captain is meaning because you may have a later release of the genoa furler. Indeed, later on, AMEL redesigned the part (that receives the pin) and made it only one part with the drive aluminum shaft (no more screws). William, in Bermuda, you will need to find a good mechanic workshop. They will manage to replace the faulty screws. This is not very complicate hardware. Have a good day. Re: message from delivery captain input
seafeverofcuan@...
Bill,
When brand new your boat came with a long green and white line about 18mm in diameter. It's purpose was for manual back up if the electric genoa furling failed. You put it around the grey colored pulley or "plate" at the bottom of the foil as described, then cross the line over and bring it back along each deck feeding it through a block attached to a stanchion on both port and starboard. That will give you the angle you require to direct the lead to your secondary cockpit winches from where you will have full manual control of furling or unrolling the genoa. To disconnect the electrical drive you pull the stainless steel pin that is mounted on the grey pulley/"plate" and you the have manual control of he foil. It would be possible I think, for something to have sheared in the drive below within the gearbox but like Bill I can't really understand what he means when he refers to bolts shearing.? The foil will operate manually because the pulley or plate as your skipper describes it is if I remember correctly clamped to the bottom of the foil. Every boat when new came with two little pieces of track for the mizzen, they were taped together with masking tape and look so totally insignificant many people thought that they were something left over from production and threw them way. Let us know how you progress. Good luck. Trevor Seafever of Cuan SM 425 Redline For sale

Hi all -
Wondering if anyone could chime in on this message received from my delivery captain... I am headed to Bermuda to meet the boat in a little over a week. "Bill we found that to elements have failed over the last five days sailing in a breeze. One, the head sail furler has an issue. The drive plate that attaches to the motor appears to have seared it's bolts and will not drive the roller. ( Amel/Riza will want know,) This is not a pin failure but the plate under it, the one it engages.). We've got a fix working for now using a line crossed to the mast winches. The other is the car on the mizzen boom. The ball bearing have come free and it binds. I've rigged a work around for it now. You do need a car it is an Antal car for 27 mm track. See if you can find another and bring it to Bermuda. It would be helpful if you brought a detail drawing of the head sail fuller to Bermuda. We shall shall run as we are the rest of the way. It appears strong and safe." Thanks as always for the help. So far this forum has been nothing but beneficial to me as a new owner. Thanks, Bill

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] New file uploaded to amelyachtowners

Bill
Interestingly I didn’t see that file but in fact in the end, having exhausted many other attempts to get the race out, this is what I had to do to get the bearing race out – see my previous post – I drilled a small carefully positioned hole above where the inner bearing sits but below where the cap comes down to through to underneath the race – also opposite the grease entry point so that grease shouldn’t bypass the main channel through the central bearing. Through this I was able to use a center punch to push the race out – it was not easy though this race split because it came out unevenly and I didn’t want to drill more than one hole – I then required a metal chisel to get the rest out (the chisel was a written off by the end) – because it was an exact fit to the channel rather than the correct race with is 1 mm smaller, the whole process was really difficult.
My dilemma now is whether to block this hole with resin just in case grease short cuts through it. Not sure at the moment. I am going to discuss in any case with Bruntons as this autoprop was clearly not correctly assembled in the first place.

All,
The file named AutoProp Maintenance & Overhaul/AutoProp Inner Race Removal Questionable procedure.PDF was deleted by me from the added files. I mistakenly added it to the files section in the folder "AutoProp." That folder, BTW, has some very good information. I was also wrong when I said that Eric sent me that file. Now, I am not sure who sent it, but it was not Erik (Kimberlite).
This deleted file suggested the drilling of the hub of the AutoProp to help remove the inner race. Since that hub and the area inside the hub is filled with grease, I am sure this is not a good solution. I did not want to be responsible for someone following that procedure.
If anyone should want that file, let me know at svbebe"at"gmail.com and I will email it to you.

Eric (Kimberlite) sent me some files regarding AutoProp to upload.
One of them was AutoProp Maintenance & Overhaul/AutoProp Inner Race Removal Questionable procedure.PDF
After viewing that file I deleted it because I believe it is a very questionable procedure and would not want to be the cause of someone using it.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: H6 AutoProp Overhaul Instructions/Parts Info Posted in Files Section
Andrew & Kate Lamb
Hi
I finally got all the blades disassembled – two of these were relatively straight forward and with the instructions from various sources (thanks Eric and Alexandre) the hardest bit – getting the thrust bearing race on the blades off – was eventually straight forward and the blade races on two of the blades just dropped out. The third blade was a different story - interestingly the one that I on reflection have never been able to push grease in through the side grease point. It was a complete nightmare and needed some extreme measures to get the bearing race out (eventually in pieces) – it turns out that it was the race that should be in the hub not the blade and therefore being and exact fit to the channel in the blade was blocking the grease from getting in (hence my confusion on initial inspection) and had seized in place. Getting this out was not without some damage to the blade but I think it will survive – This prop is 10 years old and I don’t believe has ever been serviced so the bearing races must have been put in upside down at manufacture.
Anyway I think the statement in the assembly instructions;
“4. Now fit the thrust bearing (#9), into the blade and hub. Note that the races are of different inside diameters. IMPORTANT...Fit the largest inside diameter race into the blade. If not fitted correctly you will restrict the grease flow into the propeller. Place the captured balls & race into the hub.” - is VERY important.

I just had my H6 Aito prop rebuild, there was 1 bearing a little stiff. I gain 200 rpm (full throttle). The person that rebuild mine, said every 2000 engine hours, other say every 10 years… I posted some files and pictures on: http://nikimat.com/auto_prop_h6.html The file will help you, the pictures will help for the removal, etc. but not the rebuild as I hired someone. (My philosophy in not rebuilding myself was: it is done so rarely, I rather have someone familiar with it doing it - if it had been something done every other year, I would have learnt). Hope that help a little. Sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Taino Beach, Port Lucaya, Grand Bahama, Bahamas. -------------------------------------------- On Sat, 5/23/15, andrew.lamb@... Date: Saturday, May 23, 2015, 11:13 AM Hi Whilst our boat was on the dry and after the normal greasing of the auto-prop H6, I noticed that one of the blades doesn't turn as easily as the other two also when I push the grease through the central cap it doesn't come out the side blade grease hole like the other two. I have stripped it down and the ball races, seals and central removable bearings all seem ok the only difference that I can find is what seems to be another bearing I don't think one that can be changed which seems more tightly fixed into the blade in the "bad" blade than the other two. Also I am able to turn by hand the inner side of the bearing on the two "good" blades. It does not look like this bearing can be removed easily in any of the blades but on the "good" blades if I syringe white spirit through the side blade grease hole it trickles through behind this bearing where as I can't get any white spirit through in the "bad" blade side grease hole. When I put it all back together the "bad" blade feels marginally stiffer than the other two. The lips seals seems fine on all of the blades. I wondered if anyone had knowledge or experience enough to know whether I should be too concerned about one of the blades being slightly stiffer than the other two and thoughts / advice on what to do next? thanks Andrew Ronpische SM2k 472 Canet en Roussillion, France

Thank you everyone for your very helpful responses! Being a new Amel owner I tend to think of the worst case scenario when getting my daily reports from my delivery captain. These responses have helped me understand that my batteries are running with normal output. Upon arrival of my vessel I will test all the systems to ensure they are running normal. Cheer!
