Frankly, I am at a loss as to why a person would change an engine in the first place. We have the Perkins TMD 22A Turbo and it runs like a gem. If you put two identical Amel's side by side, one with a Perkins/Volva 80hp and one with a Yamnah 110hp and ran them flat out, I doubt if you would see any difference except a larger hole in your pocket.

It is my opinion one would be better of spending the money and giving your existing engine a full overhaul. The Perkins is a very good engine and if the maintenance is kept up, like any engine, it will provide many hours of service. I know I can get parts anywhere in the world so why bother?

Just my two bob's worth.

We have 110hp Ynamar and I think you have a bit more power in reserve when the going gets tough.
Probably not much difference in flat water.

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Hallo Hanspeter,

I have only own my SM2K since 2012, so my experience is limited.

I have the Volvo TMD 22 P (same as Perkins M80T) which is rated for 78HP at 4500 RPM

Until 2 months ago, I was only able to reach 2100 to 2200 rpm (which gives 50 HP).
If you are not familiar with SM not able to reach high RPM, search post on possible oversize propeller for the SM (at least for the ones with the Volvo).

Earlier this year I had the propeller rebuild, I can reach 2500 rpm (which is 56 HP).
Note that the maximum torque is at 2500 rpm.

Mostly I motor at 1600 rpm, which gives me 5 knots, and use less than 3.5 liter (less than 1 gallon) per hour.
Sometime I motor at 1800 rpm and I (think I) obtain 7 knots.
Every 10 hours, I increase the throttle to its max 2500 rpm then reduce to 2400 rpm for a few minutes to clean exhaust/turbo.
Personally I wish (for a sailing vessel) it was normally aspirated, as I had the turbo rebuilt in 2012 then changed in 2015.

If you want, I can post the TMD22P data.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Wolfgang,

you must have used your bow-thruster a lot! It usually stops after 3 minutes of use (like 18 times 10 seconds).
Making a way to ventilate the bow-thruster will not change much about motor temperature but for sure will bring (more) wet air on the motor and relays, which will lead to ease corrosion on these electric components.
Next time you have more than 25 knots while entering a harbour, try to catch the easiest berth that you see, and come later to a more difficult berth.
The bow-thruster is powerf ul but cannot do the job in any weather conditions....

Olivier.

Re: Windpilot Amel 54

Olivier Beaute

Hi again Wolfgang,

the FURUNO pilot you have, with L&S hydraulic pump and strut is a very reliable system. If you want better, you should have a full second one installed.
Although I never tested it, I'm not sure a windpilot could handle an AMEL 54. Moreover, it will not be easy to install because of the bath platform and ladder (which is a safety equipment, in case of man-over-board).

Olivier.

If you have followed Kent's saga, you are probably already aware that new engines installed on Amel boats need to be isolated from DC ground.  That means you will want to transfer to your new engine the negative ground solenoid, the isolated senders for temperature and oil pressure, and isolated alternators, etc. Be sure to make that part of your discussion with the retailer prior to purchase and also with the installer prior to installation.

Just a reminder.  Good luck with the re-powering.

Yep....Yanmar 80 turbo. We are trying to sort out the 2 alternator option, and then get the engine to the yard in St Augustine. With a little luck, we will get North by late July or early August. You probably know better than most how these things can go, so we are keeping our fingers crossed. The boat is ready other than the new motor.

Thanks for the info. We have decided to go with the Yanmar 80hp, and not risk any Cdrive issues. I feel that 80hp is adequate, and I like the concept of less fuel consumption as well.  Hopefully, we will have the details sorted, and the engine ordered tomorrow, as we are missing some nice sailing time.

The
Dessalator 160 Liter water maker has do it yourself (DIY)
High Pressure fittings on the hoses. The ends come off and
you can install them on new hose with just simple
tools.
My experience and my
experience in this group tells me these have about a 5 year
life as long as they are not exposed to caustic chemicals,
overuse of pickling chemicals, or petroleum products. This life is not
dependent on use, but age
only.
If you happen to go over five
years, the salt water spewing in your engine compartment can
be very destructive.
The hose
on BeBe is marked: ZEC VE740000 SAE  100 R7
5/16" Made in Italy
I am due for replacement and hope to get
some soon.
In my case I figure
5 meters is plenty.
