Jib furling Rivets - Bolts
kanalmamman@...
On S/Y Lady Annila we have changed the genoa to a slighter heavier and bigger one than original. The positive consequeses are many but thedraw back is that we had to change the rivets very often cause they broke. After a while the drilled holes in the fore stay profile, has grown too big and we needed a solution. As we were in Caribbean we sailed to Amel in Martinique. They told us that they now a days when servicing the genoa furler they changed the rivets for bolts. I have made an album in the Photo section: Jib furling Rivets - Bolts where you can see both the bolts with measurements and how we mounted them. Since we changed we have sailed from Caribbean to Portugal, last 12 hours with reach to broad reach winds of 50+ knots. No problem at all with the bolts. We only have to tighten them every now and then, and especially after a hard sail. BUT this solution demands more care when furling the genoa in since the forces can be heavy. The rivets where made to brake to avoid damages of the furler and that safety is reduced with the bolts. Please see Photo section and Album: Jib furling Rivets - Bolts Regards Annsofie & Jonas S/Y Lady Annila SM232, 1998 |

Lewmar Size 1 Track End Stop - Mizzen Sheet
yahoogroups@...
I was getting tired of the "tired look" of the UV damaged Mizzen Sheet Track End Stop and bought a pair of Lewmar Size 1 Track End Stops on eBay. I noticed that the ones installed by Amel on BeBe had been drilled with a 10mm nylon sleeve inserted. The sleeve will prevent the end stop from compressing when the bolt is tightened. Either Lewmar used to make these this way, or Amel modified them to make them better. I suspect the latter. Isn't this very small thing amazing? Oh, I drilled my new Lewmar end stops and inserted the sleeve to match the way Amel did it. A photo is posted here. I am really ashamed to post an up-close photo of what I removed. Nothing else on BeBe looks anything like this, and I really dropped the ball by not replacing it earlier. Bill BeBe 387 Malta

Hi Bill,
I asked the same question when ordering the new gearbox. I also tried to enquire about changing the gearbox model to accept a shaft alternator. I was still afloat in Mexican waters when doing this and trying to locate a gearbox in USA. Unfortunately no one that I spoke to by Sat phone was able to give me information on either. Hi Alexander, yes the rivets are the "weak" part of this system. This is made on purpose, in case of over-load, they may shear. These are aluminum rivets, diameter 6 mm, length 18 mm. Ask a rigger to do it. Replace your rivets when two are gone, or before... The best rule on these very well-designed vessels is that as soon as something is worn out/broken, you should try and fix the problem at the earliest opportunity. Concerning the VAT issue, you should probably open a new topic. What is the current vessel's flag? Olivier. Let me ask a question here in this thread. There is a sender which looks like a temperature sender on the top of the transmission. It could possibly be a switch. I am reading with lots of interest all your detailed explanations on the fuller… If you don’t mind, I do have a question about the rivets. What are they for? Meaning why were rivet used instead of bolt? Are they supposed to break under certain load? On mine, I noted that the 1 is missing (red arrow) and 1 is loose (orange arrow). Pictures on: http://nikimat.com/genoa_furler_rivet.html I have never put a rivet… so not familiar with the process. How critical short term? How easy to put back? Any special size/lenght of rivet? Thanks in advance. Oliver states that it is likely Bebe and Seafever have been modified since your boat was built and therefore are different. It sounds from your postings, that your delivery skipper is very competent and likely correct in his assumption Should you have to remove the forestay, then you may consider refilling the foil with grease and carefully checking the Amel fitting at the top of the foil where it meets the mast. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] ZF Hurth Transmission troubles

Bill,
He may be right but I doubt it, especially if you use a salt busting type chemical to clean the heat exchanger out, which is were I came unstuck. I brought in the "professionals" to clean salt out of the seawater cooled water ways on the Yanmar and all seemed fine. When I returned to the boat I even pulled the gearbox heat exchanger just to check and sure enough it was very clean. About three weeks later during a four day passage it let go in the middle of the night and we had no drive. At first, I thought I had caught a net and was confused when I went over the side to cut it free to find no marks on the hull and no net. When I realized it was the gearbox I bypassed the heat exchanger and refilled he gearbox, it ran for about ten hours and then gave up. The dinghy lashed alongside took me upwind for the next 75 miles. An iron rule ever since on passage, is that the engine compartment is opened and a laser temperature gauge is used every two hours to check all the temperatures and also you will soon smell if anything is awry. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] ZF Hurth Transmission troubles
yahoogroups@...
I have recently read of four or five transmission oil cooler problems. In getting prepared for our Atlantic Crossing, I decided to buy one of the Bowman DC60-XAA with 3367 rubber end caps from the Bowman distributor in Malta. It was 105 euro, delivered. Nice guy - Leonard +356 99499082. Email leobugeja"at"hotmail.com.
He said the biggest failure that that has seen from these coolers is the over-tightening of the hose clamps. He said to be careful because the metal is a copper-nickle and will bend easily if you over-tighten the clamp. He said that these routinely last 20 years. Bill BeBe 387 |
