Paul,
Do you have a black deck plug ?
If so, it will only be stuck, lever it out around the edge, it will come...there's nothing holding it in except friction.

Fresh Water Pump / expansion tank - IDRO ECOINOX

Andrew & Kate Lamb

We have an IDRO ECOINOX combined pump and water expansion tank unit installed – we don’t have the standard expansion tank fitted behind the hot water heater. We now have the water pump rapidly cycling when running water – I assume therefore there is a problem with the expansion tank. I wondered if anyone else had this sort of pump installed and had any manuals / tech information on it – We don’t seem to have any in the boat manuals and there is a dearth of information on the internet. I would guess an option might be to fit a standard expansion tank behind the hot water heater but I am not sure of the size and manufacturer of what is fitted as standard in the earlier Amels?

Thanks

Paul,

I believe that there are several types of black water access ports on SM's. BeBe 387 simply unscrews and the piece that you unscrew looks similar to the fuel or water ports.

Maybe a photo of what you have is needed.

Hi Kent,

I have always enjoyed Potter Cove on the east side of Prudence Island. The ASM is too big to go into the cove, so anchor just south of the cove entrance in thick mud bottom. Or pick up a transient mooring in Bristol Harbor and visit the Americas Cup / Herreshoff Museum and dine at Quito's.

Andrew,

For what is worth...

The original sails on BeBe 387 were Demi sails. Shortly after buying BeBe I had larger UV panels made for the main and the mizzen because with the sails furled and the outhaul car all the way forward to the stop, there was still some sail unprotected. Maybe Demi Sails should be called Demi UV.

I realize this won't solve your problem because as I have said before, I believe that the SM mast is NOT designed for the extra space required by battens, and you will experience wear exactly as you have experienced wear.

Funny thing...I was with an Amel owner last night who asked me what my answer would have been if I had been asked by another owner whether it was safe to forgo servicing the C drive. I told him that I would have said "you should service it because you already have it out of the water and it has been two years since service." The addage applies, "...don't do as I do, rather do as I say..."

We normally haul every two years to renew antifouling and perform maintenance including servicing the C drive and Bow Thruster. We hauled in May in Malta and because we had so few hours on the C Drive, I chose to forgo the C Drive maintenance. A few months later we have a slight discoloration of the C Drive oil in the reservoir to a caramel color...definite water intrusion. I drained some from the reservoir to confirm.

So, now we are going to pay to haul/launch for something we should have done in Malta.

Probably everyone knows this, but the lesson learned is the C Drive should be serviced every 2 years or 800 hours, which ever comes first. And, when your boat is out of the water don't put off something you can do while it is out.

Hanspeter,

No bonding to the arch. I don't need to check, I was there and participated in the wiring of the arch solar panels. Bonding is not necessary.

I don't use the arch to lift the dinghy and I don't transport the dinghy on the arch. If I did, I would not do it with an outboard engine. You never know what kind of storm and conditions you might encounter on a passage. I travel with the dinghy (RIB aluminum bottom) upside down and across the mizzen deck, with the 15hp outboard engine in the aft lazerrette.

I like Naxos. Say hello to the dock master, Nicholas, for Judy and me. He is really a nice guy!

Hi Chris & Bill,
On SM243 I had installed a new Sterling 30A charger/2500W inverter in 2012. Per the installation instructions the grounding post was led to the bonding system by my "marine electrician". At that point I didn't know any better. When the unit failed (the charger quit working but the inverter still worked) the fault went to the bonding system, and destroyed my prop shaft. There were other misconnections of the bonding system that contributed, too.
On close inspection I found that the 220AC and 24V DC grounds on the charger/inverter were both connected to its chassis and thus the bonding system.

I suspect that I could have disconnected the 220AC ground from the chassis and run it to the boat's 220 ground, and also run the DC ground to the 24V battery negative.

Instead, I elected not to keep the charger/inverter because of the posts on this forum stating that Amel doesn't use Charger/Inverter's for this very reason. If I want to make a pot of coffee or pop something in the micro ondes, I crank up the Onan, which I usually run for an hour or so each morning and evening anyway.
Hope that helps some, anyway.

Chris & Kent,

This could be a complicated issue concerning Earth, the DC side of the charger and the Amel bonding system. If Emek installed this charger, I would ask Riza. Also, Kent, if you have your "ears on," you might want to jump into this conversation.

First, I believe that the 230VAC Charger/Inverter must be connected to Earth for safe shore power and the generator operation. Since Amel uses green/yellow for both Earth and the Amel Bonding System, you need to be especially careful that it is not connected to the Amel Bonding System.

Secondly, have you looked to see if a yellow/green wire is connected somewhere to the chassis of the charger/inverter? If you have not looked, look now and let me know, because this yellow/green wire will need to be traced to Earth...and verified that it is NOT connected to the Amel Bonding System.

Lastly, most marine electricians simply do not totally understand these wiring schemes on an Amel and are likely to make the wrong assumption. That goes for almost any marine electrician, including Emek's. That said, I am reasonably certain the Riza knows how it should be connected.

Alex,

With some modern MPPT controllers series is more efficient. I only had enough room at the top of the EMEK Marine arch for three of the 135 watt panels. They are wired in series producing a maximum of 75 volts to the controller, and my controller takes a maximum of 75 volts.

While at anchor, I run the generator to make water, to heat water, to wash clothes, and to top off the batteries.

So you have regular “flooded” Delco Freedom batteries and they charge fully, this si great.

I thought of the Kyocera as well.
Are they mounted on series or parallel?

A neighbor on a 54 has 4 x 200 Watt mounted in series and obtain 96 Volt which is then convert in 24 volt…
he (try to) explain the lost of energy proportional to the square of the amp, etc. in short gaining 35% by mounting in series, but I have absolutely no clue on that…
So just trying to understand and see working solutions…

Why do you run your genset? To make water, etc. or also to help charging the bateries?

As always thanks for the help!

Alex,
We have 405 watts of solar which will keep the
batteries at 100% during daylight while running freezer,
fridge, fans and a computer or two. We have a Victron Blue
MPPT controller which has been very good at regulating the
charge during daylight hours. We have 12 standard 110amp
house batteries...freedom model.
I would go with either German or Japanese solar
panels and keep clear of Chinese. There are probably good
panels from China, but I know that there are many poor
quality panels. I think that you get what you pay for. I
chose Kyocera panels from Japan...3 @ 135 watts each with a
MPPT controller up to 75 volts and up to 50 amps. I have the
3 panels wired in a series.
I now run the generator at anchor for about 1
to 1.5 hours every second day.

So will consider solar panels.

Does anyone have input in this solution?

Also for those using solar panels, did you keep the same

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] C Drive shaft seals and wear bearing - don't do what I did

Andrew & Kate Lamb

While we are sharing mistakes – I will share our more expensive mistake.

We replaced our main and mizzen sails with hydranet vertical battened sails recently, having been assured by Demi sails that they make plenty of these for the super maramu and they don’t pose a problem. They did perform very well during the summer and we have not had any problem so far in furling  them, however they do not go all the way into the mast such that there is always some sail visible without UV protection, which I think is problem for their longevity. Also I am concerned about wear on the batten slots. So I think on reflection given the choice again I would not have vertical battens fitted.

Bill,

I did the same thing last year—Just lazy I guess.

I also changed the O ring on the drain plug and put some sealant between the outside of the drain plug and the C-Drive body. Just in case that is where the water was coming from

All,

We learn from our mistakes, and sometimes we benefit from other's mistakes. I think that I have learned a lot from others, so it is time to payback.

Best,

Bill

Hi Chris,

We are in Goček and will meet in a few days. Obviously, gathering the information is important for your decision. Wait until you see what Eleuthera looks like then it might make your decisions easy…

All the interior/exterior living space is either Silvertech or Sunbrella Super +. Sleeping accommodations are Ikea mattress covers cut and sewn to size. Then fitted sheets over the mattresses. Looks very good and all fabrics will still be in good nick long after I’m pushing up daisies!!

UltraSuede is better for berths, but if you use UltraLeather and have a very thick fiber layer (1.5 to 2") as a mattress pad, it might be OK for sleeping. You might want to test this fiber before you upholster with UltraLeather. If it works, you will probably want to have custom mattress pads made for the berths.

I left the original UltraSuede in the forward and aft berths and passageway.

Thanks, Eric.

If you decide to do something, I could write the specs out for you to give to an upholsterer, or speak to an upholsterer on the phone with you. Most upholsterers I have met are visual and hands-on...and do not follow written instructions very well.

Interestingly, the upholsterer's foam supplier had never split viscoelastic foam (memory foam) in 25mm (1") thicknesses. I convinced the upholsterer that the surfaces would be best with a layer of viscoelastic foam separating the cushion base foam which I demanded as HR 3.5 (High Resilience 3.5 pounds per cubic foot). The upholsterer had never used HR 3.5 and a 25mm layer of viscoelastic foam. The foam supplier had never offered viscoelastic at 25mm. The upholsterer tells me that from now on, that is all he is going to use, and that he is mad at the foam supplier for telling every other upholsterer about it. He says the foam supplier started selling 25mm viscoelastic to all of the upholstery suppliers. I am happy to have contributed to better things in Barcelona. hahahaha!

You could sail to Barcelona, Spain and I can hook you up with the guy...Or Heyers, France for a lot more money.

Herbert,

If you happen to be in Gocek, the mechanics at EMEK know how to do this job. I saw them overhaul another Amel Genoa furler.

While I was there I had them drill and tap my Genoa furler gearbox for a grease nipple. I had them do the same thing to the outhaul and furling gearboxes on the Main Mast

I pump a little grease into each one once a year. When not adding grease, I replace the grease nipple with a nylon screw. Some owners have added two tapped holes on each one. They unscrew nylon screws from each, screw a grease nipple in one and pump grease until grease comes out the other hole. This is probably an improvement over what I did.

All gears need lubrication. I am not sure why Amel did not add a method of lubrication to these gearboxes. What makes matters worse is that these gearboxes "bake" the grease in the hot sun. On the other hand, the gearboxes will last 10 years, or more, without adding grease...BUT, will probably last 20+ years WITH ADDING GREASE!

We made the service in kusadasi in turkey, and nearly everything that the mechanics did there made problems later, we had to rework everything step by step. So it would not surprise me if they did not grease it

Chris,
