Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Ullman Sails

Rink De Haan

Hi Eric,

There is a Ullman Sails representative in Kusadasi. I believe they are made in Izmir.
I have a complete set of Ullman sails on my SM2K. To me they were a good replacement to the old original sails. The sails are made of Contender sailcloth which is produced by a Dutch company and worldwide delivered.
The sails I have are not of the tri-radial type.

I just replaced the mizzen sail for €1275. I have to admit that I did not do any in depth research on alternatives.

Eric,

I do not, but I do have experience with a very large Turkish loft that is currently the worrldwide loft for one name brand and makes sails independently.

Qsails is the independent brand. It is owned by Tashin OGE. Email is qsails at qsails dot com. He has all three of BeBe's original Deme Sails in his loft.
He produced hydranet in a triradial cut for BeBe, but can also use dacron, or any other non proprietary cloth. He ships world wide.  I found his quality very high and his prices very competitive.

Also, you should probably talk with Amel owner Dave Benjamin,  owner of Planet sails.

Good luck, I am sorry that I have no comments about Ulman.

Thank you all. I'll buy a laser meter (?) to measure the distance between the top of the mast in the 4 sites. But as seen in the pictures, the mast is curved back us to the upper spreaders. But I saw that mine is not the only mast-amel with this reverse bend. I'd like to know wath can be the cause of this.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Main mast profile

Richard03801 <richard03801@...>

Hi all, the Amel SM  is designed with a high tension deck stepped mast the mast to be most effective it needs to stay in column at very high tension. There should be not slack on the lee side going to windward. No bend. The stays need to ring when tapped with a wooden hammer handle.

I asked a rigger who has a lot of experience tuning rigs and he said for the SM get the mast base sitting flat on its step. To do otherwise creates distortional tensions.

Hi

If your yacht is a ketch and the mizzen is straight why not check the angle of mast to deck of the mizzen. This will give you a good guide to the angle for the main.  My Santorin seems to have masts in parallel.

As for those concerned with weight distribution I have encountered no problems at all in seaworthiness. I have a 3 degree inclination to port, and a distinct stern down aspect. I sail with 2 bikes, the dinghy, 6 gas bottles and all the fenders in the lazarette. We've sailed on all points in sizeable swell and up to f9 with no concern about the boat's capability. I will be pleased to hear from others who have sailed in really heavy weather about the requirement to re- distribute the weight..

Good luck with rigging.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Main mast profile

Alexandre Uster von Baar

You will get "Lee Helm" versus "weather helm".
at first I balanced mine to be parallel to the water line, and I loved to have more "weather helm", but the top cavity where the bow thruster is located was at the water line... so had to rebalance...

And Alan from SV Elyse SM 437 made an excellent remark about the rudder shaft gland is now below the waterline...

It looks like an impossible compromise...

What are the implications on the
performance of the later Amels SM / SM2000  if the weight
has been progressively added to the stern of the boat design
and a
rising bow through the range of models – has this been
measured by Amel?

Good morning to all. In order to do what tells me Craig, I
would, first of all, put the mast perpendicular to the boat,
with rake = 0. I could check with the main halyard, but the
boat is not level. The Santorin, at least mine, is tilted
toward the stern. Carrying
weight in the bow does not solve the problem. So what
should I do? Thanks for your cooperation. Enio

Hi Bil,

No, my SSB and 12V sailor power supply are off when the main switches are off.

We sailed in force 12 conditions for 36 hours and did not redistribute anything on Kimberlite---if you are interested here is a link to an article about us—

Please follow the link to the helicopter rescue video of another boat.

The beginning of the video is taken at night later in the daylight they went back

To recover the body of the captain of the boat. You can see the helicopter hovering 100 feet above the waves and near the end of the video, the helicopter almost goes into a 100 foot wave.

What are the implications on the performance of the later Amels SM / SM2000  if the weight has been progressively added to the stern of the boat design and a rising bow through the range of models – has this been measured by Amel?

Enio,

Do what we did. We repainted the water line.

Good morning to all. In order to do what tells me Craig, I would, first of all, put the mast perpendicular to the boat, with rake = 0. I could check with the main halyard, but the boat is not level. The Santorin, at least mine, is tilted toward the stern. Carrying weight in the bow does not solve the problem. So what should I do? Thanks for your cooperation. Enio

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Main mast profile

Alan Leslie

Seems to me that Amel never changed the waterline, even though they changed the boat... a lot more weight aft of the centre.

I wouldn't try to weigh the bow down, that will just produce polar moments that will make the boat move up and down in a sea...

I would, and I think I will next time we paint, move the waterline up at the stern.

The only downside to all this, and is a problem I have , is that the rudder shaft gland is now below the waterline, so it has a propensity to leak water into the aft cabin, and if you try to replace the packing while still in the water, it floods !!

Cheers]

Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>

Hello Enio,

It seems all Amels up to the 54 had a slight stern down posture.  I corrected most of mine by placing 2 large anchors forward and limiting heavy items from the aft lazarette.

It is one of the idiosyncrasies of our boats.

Good luck with the mast… I would think that your eye along the leading edge of the mast should give you a close to perfect line… at least the mast will be straight!

Cheers,
