Graham,
You can download a photo of the Yanmar negative solenoid here: https://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/5036225/or/1547195149/name/Starter+Relay+Negative+Solenoid+Fan+Relay.jpg?token=Z5MLvYWvPINMU1YxFPpEFRHA2BNZ2PnXVAREWQ--&download=1 If the above download link does not work, it is in the photo album Yanmar "4JH3-HTE" and it is titled "Starter Relay Negative Solenoid Fan Relay." Look for the downward pointing arrow to click to download. Maybe this will help you locate it on your TMD22. I recently received an email from Drew Gaffney after his Atlantic crossing, East to West, from Ascension Island to Brazil. The negative solenoid failed on his passage, but he was able to push the rubber button on top of the solenoid to get his Yanmar started. Of course, Drew and many of us learned this "quick/emergency fix" here in the Amel Owners Group...Thanks to the person who originally posted the work around. It does not belong in this thread, but Drew Gaffney had an expert install a second autopilot drive. The expert did not reverse the polarity of the second drive to compensate for the opposite orientation of the drive. I was able to email Drew the fix. I will add this comment to the recent Raymarine thread as well. Bill BeBe 387 |

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Furler Top Swivel (bearing collar)
Hi, Ian, I have my jib furler off and going to be powder coated, but I haven't brought the whole forestay down or removed the foil from the stay. I drilled out the rivets to remove the furler, but there are rivet pieces stuck in the foil, I guess trapped by the plug. The foil still rotates freely so I'm not keen on taking it off and replacing bearings. I'm wondering just what the plug looks like and how hard it is to remove without causing any damage. Does anyone have any pics of the plug so I know what I'm dealing with? Will the bearings come out
all over the deck if I try to remove the plug ? Any advice appreciated. I'm still on the hard in Fernandina Beach, FL
waiting for my lower drive to come back from Amel...I guess they are off on holiday all of August, so it'll probably be October before I get it back. I'm fairly sure it was 26 top and 26 bottom. I know I had to buy an extra pack from Harken to make up the number and had quite a few left over . When you put the new bearings in stand the swivel upside down - it is difficult to get the balls to circulate the right way up until the plug is in place! Good luck Ian |

We recently replaced our Raymarine Auto pilot Version ST7000 with the new Raymarine Evolution. Our former unit did not work all the time and it was discovered that the motherboard was gone. No replacement parts available. The Raymarine dealer in St Martin had a lot of old units with the same problem in his backroom as there are no parts available to repair them with. We checked with Raymarine and confirmed this about replacement parts. None located on ebay either. The new unit works on both our existing Autopilot drives. It is 12V and works very well. We have noticed a lot less helm movement and it learns from itself to sail a straighter coarse. Paul & Sue SV NOMAD SM362 To: amelyachtowners@... From: amelyachtowners@... We installed a B&G Triton Pilot High Current Autopilot Computer (in reality, a repackaged Simrad AC42 computer, 24v) about a year and a half ago. The installers of course and despite my warnings in writing just connected it to the drives. The drives worked, but we had been forewarned here in the forum that they would fail within 100 hours, as the clutches will only accept 12V.
The installers then installed a Victron Orion DC-DC converter (24V to 12V) that they hooked to the clutch output on the B&G and to the clutch input on the Raymarine drives. It's certainly been several hundreds of hours of B&G autopilot use since, and fortunately both drives are still doing well. However, the sound they emit while functioning is less crisp that when we use the old Raytheon pilot (we retained the ability to switch from B&G computer to Raytheon computer with the flip of a switch). It's hard to describe the sound difference, other than the Raytheon pilot makes the drives beep, while the B&G makes them whir, but the performance seems similar. It would be interesting to hear sound comparisons from those who have heard the factory original Ray/Ray combo vs. any new Ray computer/old Ray drives or other brands mixed with the Raymarine drives. This is in response to: Raymarine does not make a drive with a 24VDC clutch. All Raymarine drives, even the 24VDC drives have a 12VDC clutch. I have seen experts make this mistake, and I made this mistake. There is either a switch or a movable spade-fuse on the Raymarine Course Computer to select 12 or 24VDC for the clutch. If you have any Raymarine drive, always select 12VDC for the clutch. |

I think you are quoting me, and I think I was the first one to warn the Group about this issue. I learned the hard/expensive way.
It amazes me how many "experts" do not know this. Amel's electronics contractor, Pochon (sp), made this mistake when they upgraded the electronics on a friend's Super Maramu.

Re: Head piping, replacement
Alan,
Bill Rouse of svBeBe has put a very comprehensive description in the Photos section in the album "Head Service". I recently did this task on the aft head, and found that even after cleaning out the smaller diameter and larger diameter hoses thoroughly (and finding them re-useable), I needed to use Bill's "Roto-Rooter" device (in my case a 4 foot section of rigging wire on the end of a power drill) to clean out the brass pipe that the larger diameter hose attaches to just prior to the holding tank. The stuff I got out was like cement, as much as a half inch thick. So, just replacing or cleaning out the hoses may not be enough to remove your clog. I would remove as much of this material as possible, rather than push any of it into the holding tank. Getting it out of the holding tank without clogging your holding tank through-hull fitting might otherwise be problematic. Using a hose up the brass pipe I could rinse out the majority of the loosened material as I went along into a large plastic bag wrapped around the lower end of the brass pipe. By the way - be careful and wear gloves and safety goggles when roto-rootering, and don't use too much excess wire. A couple of times the rigging wire got wedged in at the business end and the excess wire started to loop around and it whipped me in the face, breaking my glasses. Thank God I was wearing the glasses or the whipping loop might have blinded me. No fun, but it can be done. Good luck! Derick SM2K #400 Brava |

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Volvo TMD22a Intermittent electrical failure causing ...
Bill Fletcher
The generator ground solenoid are located behind the generator between the generator and bulkhead. There is a black wire going from the generator starter and the solenoid. Then another black wire connected to the solenoid. The vibration of the generator can loosen terminals connections and cause the generator not to start. This is also true for the engine there is a separate solenoid for that also. I don't know exactly where that one is but it will have a wire running from the starter to the ground solenoid. The problem with troubleshooting these circuits is that the voltage will look good but current will not flow. On Tue, Aug 12, 2014 at 1:02 AM, yahoogroups@... Eric Freedman: Bow Sprit and Series Drogue.
islandbwoy4434
Good morning Eric, I am looking for some advice on selecting an off the shelf bow sprit and how you have mounted your series drogue on Kimberlite and fly downwind sails? I am looking at a Selden bow sprit....I know you fabricated your own...I am interested if you looked at off the shelf options. I am curious at how your mast head is set up for for flying your light air downwind sail. Is there an issue with the sail halyard catching the top swivel furling horns if the standard blocks are used? Do we have to look at fabricating some kind of forward facing extension for the Halyard block? I also just read the ON article on your trip to the Caribbean in October and the use of the series drogue. (great read) You mention at the end "I am also designing a different set of attachment points for the drogue bridle so we can adjust it without putting strain on the backstay" Just wondering how you originally attached the drogue and if you found a better solution to prevent chafe on the backstay. We will order ours shortly and modify the bridle if you have any suggestions. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Volvo TMD22a Intermittent electrical failure causing ...
yahoogroups@...
I am not sure where it is located, but follow the negative (black) cable from the battery compartment. It will go to the solenoid, a small can shaped device and connect to it. Also connected to the solenoid is the other side of the solenoid switch. These connections are large wires. You can bypass the solenoid by connecting the two large wires together. I do not recommend bypassing, other than to test.
