Re: Dessalator 24v watermaker motor expected brush life? Anyone replace theirs?
Ian, Maybe this helps. The 220v doesn't have brushes

Hi Scott,
In 21 years since new we have done at least 2,000 hours on our 60 lph Dessalator--we may have done more than 3,000, but I am not on the boat at the moment. That would be a mixture of 220v and 24v. I can't recall changing brushes on the 220v motor but have
done so once on the 24v.
I don't know if you have the same motors.

Have any of you had to replace the 24v brushes on your Dessalator 24v water maker pump motors? I am guessing the motors are similar across the range, but to be specific, the 24v motor on our Duo 100 is the Drive Systems V745.
A fellow A54 stated that they've had to replace theirs every 500 hours of use, which seems quite low. As a basis for comparison, my Flojet fridge water pump motor brushes averaged anywhere from 2000-3000 hours running 24/7 and the Marco engineers I spoke to told me to expect the same from their brushed motors. We are now in the South Pacific with about 500 hours on the 24V motor and I am getting a bit nervous. Desslator stated that "We can’t tell you how many hours last the brushes, it is too random, there is no really “rules” for that." And unfortunately, due to supply chain issues, it will take 2-3 months for Drive Systems to manufacture them and cost around 300 euros for two sets of them. The price is even higher from Dessalator. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: SM Main Furling and outhaul gearbox - Bonfiglioli substituted for Leroy Somer
I have changed the main sail furling motor and gearbox from the leroy somer gearbox to the bonfiglioli.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I had new mounts made for the gearbox to the mast, they are slightly different, this way I can change back. The inside diameter of the gearbox drive is smaller than the leroy somer gearbox, I had a new drive post made to suit, you could machine the gearbox to suit the existing post that drives the furling gearbox, this will allow you to use the bonfiglioli on the outhaul as well.

Re: Updating the Furuno GP-150
Scott SV Tengah
Arno, very happy to hear that you were able to update it yourself. You didn't have to jumper the flow control wires per the Furuno instructions and my conversation with Furuno Australia? I guess setting flow control "off" in device manager achieves the same?
That is what is stopping me. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Re: Maramu replacement autopilot drive motor
Arlo Bess
The above install is on my Mango using a B&G Ram T2 linear drive and a B&G NAC 3 AP computer. I have the original AP still working well. Redundancy is good to have.

Re: Maramu replacement autopilot drive motor
Dear all,
why not installing the drive unit next to the rudder shaft? We did this on our Sharki two years ago and we are very pleased with the performance and mo noise to hear in the cockpit. We used the Jefa DD1 drive unit together with the Raymarine 200 autopilot, installed in addition to the original Autohelm autopilot system installed by Amel. Volker Mickmoon, Sharki Hull no. 176

SM Main Furling and outhaul gearbox - Bonfiglioli substituted for Leroy Somer
All, I am curious if a Bonfiglioli Main Furling and outhaul gearbox will work on a SM that was originally fitted with a Leroy Somer motor and gearbox. If so, is there an owner who could document the process of changing a Leroy Somer gearbox for a Bonfiglioli? Bill

Hi Alex
Would be great to have more info and pictures of your hydrovane installation. Something I am considering for my Maramu in the next year or so. Thanks Robin

Hey Ben, Here are a few pictures, the install was made by the previous owner, so I don't have much insight, we don't have anything to complain about, it behaved really well, The unit in the galley is noisier than we'd like though, not too much but definitely was a factor to order a hydrovane for our upcoming atlantic crossing, after 3 days of autopilot in the bay of biscay. Good luck with the install and don't hesitate if you need more info.

Re: Lithium Batteries / Insurnace
Thanks Mark. I’ve heard good things about TopSail. I wouldn’t have an issue documenting my treatment and installation to those terms. I have been negotiating multi-million and billion dollar contracts pretty much my entire professional career and would feel very comfortable litigating that successfully if need be.

Re: Lithium Batteries / Insurnace
Brent,
This is TopSail from the UK. The policy is Global Yacht Cover underwritten by Great Lake Insurance SE (AM Best A+ rating) sold with a 5% discount to OCC members.
I don’t have lithium batteries but thought I’d share for those who might be seeking an insurance company willing to accept vessels who have upgraded.
With best regards,
Mark

That sounds very reasonable. It allows for DYI but requires a decent BMS with logging capabilities and presumably a well documented installation following best practices. That’s about as good as could’ve been hoped for. Which insurance company was that Mark?

Re: Introduction - and some help on fridges pls
Bill Kinney
Another reason not to sweat too much the efficiency of a front loading fridge: Air is very easy to cool down. Even if you managed to exchange ALL the cold air in the fridge for room temperature air the energy cost to cool down that warm air is a small fraction of the energy needed to cool ONE warm beer down to 4C. And the energy needed to freeze water into ice is almost another order of magnitude higher again.
In short it is TECHNICALLY true that a top loading fridge is more efficient ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL, in the real world the loss of cold air when opening a door is a negligible part of the fridge’s energy budget. This is especially so if you need to leave the top loader open longer because things as less accessible. Far more important is better insulation, and especially more air tight door seals. This: "...full records are to be kept. Ha! What is the definition of "full?" Probably something different from what you have. If you have Lithium batteries, that policy, and probably any claim, look for a denial. Bill
