Not quite plug and play but close. The job took about 1/2 hr and was done by myself. We had replaced the 100 Amp twice before. We are rarely on shore power, only once a year during haul-out. We replaced with a 30 amp. We think the old one just got corrosion as indicated by Scandvik when we sent it in for repair. We think both chargers got some water when the high water pressure hose for the water maker let loose about a year before. Paul & Sue laFrance SV NOMAD #362 To: amelyachtowners@... Did you had to replace some of the existing wire? Or was it more like "plug" and done? Were you able to do it yourself? Currently I have the 30 and 50 Amp. Did you had 30 and 100? What size did you replace it with? Do you know what was the cause of the charger failing? Did only 1 failed or did you end replacing both? A bit anxious... Thanks in advance. To: "amelyachtowners@..." <amelyachtowners@...> Date: Saturday, June 14, 2014, 3:51 PM Alexandre We had to replace our 50 Amp charger and did it with a Dolphin. The problem with the new one was it was the same size as the 100Amp Dolphin and we had to mount it sideways. The job was easily done and the wires came out the side toward the bow. The new charger has similar settings to the 100Amp so you can adjust the charge according to the type of battery bank you have. We got the charger out of Vero Beach, Florida from Scanvisk Inc. Where is Solenoide on Volvo TMD22 ?
Alexandre Uster von Baar
Yesterday after testing some more the 50 Amp charger, I look at the Volvo TMD22 to look at the Stop Solenoid and did not see it. While it is very visible on the Genset. Is it hidden somewhere?
Also, I remember reading in the black box there is "something" (I think I remember a 50 Amp fuse) that I should have in stock? Could I have the specs? Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT By Street Marina, Nassau, Bahamas |

I really like the idea of the "Flexible panels" you installed as this is temporary and I love sailing without the cover at night (plus for docking). Who make of these? What other equipment was needed aside the panels? Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre Sm2K #289 NIKIMAT Bay Street Marina, Nassau, The Bahamas. -------------------------------------------- On Sun, 6/15/14, svperegrinus <no_reply@...> wrote:
Subject: Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Fibre glass sprayhood replacement for Amel 54 To: amelyachtowners@... Date: Sunday, June 15, 2014, 9:15 PM On Peregrinus, an Amel '53, we have: 1. The original canvas top of SM2000, across three metal bars. This collapses forward for open-sky sailing. Ours has a clear plastic window right above the steering wheel, so the helmsman can see the main, with a zippered cover that is rolled, then velcroed+snapped in rolled place. Ours consists of two layers of Sunbrella, a feature we specified long before the panels idea for completely unrelated reasons. 2, A canvas extension that zips aft of the above top and runs to a metal bar that runs the width of the cockpit. Usually removed during sailing for easy view of the main, the mizzen, and even the genoa. 3. On item (1) above, we have zippered three 100W e.a. solar panels. About 50% of these usually produce little power, due to boom shadow. We could have installed a fourth panel, but evidently we did not want to block the helmsman's window. These are flexible solar panels, very light, made by Solbian supposedly in Italy, although I question this latter fact. 4. Re: New Dolphin Battery charger?
We replaced our 30A Dolphin with a 30A 24V Pronautic charger with the same volt / Hz specs as your Mastervolt....predetermined progs for different battery chemistries and a custom setting where you can set your own absorption and float volts, an info panel that tells everything...designed for the marine environment - very happy with it. Theres a pic of it on the facebook page Cheers Alan SV Elyse SM437 Papeete |

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] New Dolphin Battery charger?
Some years ago Zantrex bought out Heart. To the best of my knowledge Heart made a very good product.
Our boat came with a Zantrex copy of a Heart battery charger. It failed shortly after buying the boat. After calling Zantrex tech support they suggested we buy a new charger rather than trying to fix that one. We replaced it with a new Zantrex Tru-Charge 2, 40Amp model. In less than a year it failed. Zantrex supplied a replacement under warranty through West Marine. A little over a year latter it too failed...not under warranty. Tech support said that the charger was not serviceable and that I should buy a 4th Zantrex charger. At this point I started researching marine battery chargers. Victron gets good reviews from people who know their stuff, so does Master Volt. I suspect Blue Sea also makes a good charger...but they are new to the battery charger market. I would personally let their design mature at least to its 2nd generation before installing one on my boat. That said, I like Blue Sea products. I am sure that there are other good marine battery chargers out there. BTW we have an older 1800W Zantrex inverter on our boat that works fine. YMMV. Mark Hanna S/V Marguerite |

Re: New Dolphin Battery charger?
svperegrinus@yahoo.com
With regard to:
This is an issue that concerns us. Therefore, when in July last year we replaced our rusted and failed 100A Dolphin charger with a 100A Mastervolt charger and added other equipment, we installed two spray shields designed to protect most of the new equipment from such an event (watermaker hoses breaking up or becoming undone). The newly installed water barriers are not expected to interfere excessively with cooling of the equipment being protected; this is something that needs to be carefully considered. So far, the equipment has held up and survived the very hot Jul-Aug season in Miami and the Bahamas. Anyone considering a Mastervolt charger will be sorely tempted to buy, for a very few extra dollars, a "Combi" unit which in about the same package can give you inverter/charger/worldwide capabilities. We opted against this economical and practical option but the pros and cons can be fodder for another thread. We now have two regular Mastervolt chargers, one 30A and one 100A and both can be monitored and controlled from the nav table via our Masterview display or from the engine room via their own little displays. 90V to 260 V, 45 to 66 Hz, these two will take pretty much anything and deliver 24V. We understand the Amel shipyard factory delivered Peregrinus with the 30A+100A configuration even though our Amel boat manual only makes reference to a 30A+50A configuration. Hi John and Ruth
You are both too modest in your sailing achievements. Not only have you circumnavigated the earth but you sailed around Cape Horn and cruised Patagonia. I remember reading the amazing stories that Ruth wrote. I also had the opportunity to Sail MoonDog with you and Ruth from Bermuda to the Chesssapekee. The lessons I learned on that trip and the advice you gave me stayed with me through the years and made my cruising safer and more enjoyable.
I hope to see you and Ruth one day soon. How about a round of golf one day.
Thank you for everything

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Fibre glass sprayhood replacement for Amel 54
svperegrinus <no_reply@...>
On Peregrinus, an Amel '53, we have:
1. 4. On Item (2) above we chose to not install anything because there is less rigidity in the area. Single layer of Sunbrella. Also, removed very often. Pros: I. Avoid replacing your canvas top with a fiber-glass one. II. Remove the panels and put them below berth mattresses, if desired. Sleep on top: a person cannot detect the presence of the panel and the panel is not damaged. III. Fold down the roof for open sailing. IV. No stainless steel work. V. Retain Amel factory look/factory functionality. Cons: a. Cost. Flexible panels are ridiculously expensive. b. Complexity. Had to involve the canvas maker in addition to the electrician. c. Complexity. Since the design is completely removable, instead of glands for the cables, there are water-proof connectors at the fiberglass exterior/interior interface. c. Under the boom? Not the ideal location. Never will get 100% of nominal power because there will always be a shadow no matter what! d. Will become redundant if an arch is ever installed aft. Still unclear on whether we want to move in that direction. We installed one MPPT charger per e.a. panel. A lot more data/details available if needed. Welcome Bob & Marybeth. You have joined a rather unique group of sailors here. The learning curve is steep with Amels and you will find many people here who are happy to help you along. Some are seasoned veterans who seem to know everything, and others (like me) are still on that steep curve but are happy to share what we have learned. You have some big shoes to fill in taking MoonDog on her next sailing adventure. I know you will come to trust her with your lives. Fair winds and following seas. I have no experience with Dolphin battery chargers. Stay away from Zantrex. Master Volt makes wonderful battery chargers, definitely up to the high standards of Amel. We bought the 50 Amp model. Auto switches from 120v / 60Hz to 240v / 50Hz input volts. (Can be used worldwide) will charge various battery chemistries, AGM, flooded etc. Multi bank charging, battery temp sensors. Easy to install, intelligent and intuitive set up. Very modern (state of art charging algorithms) and robust for marine environment. Mark Hanna S/V Marguerite Sharki NO. 49 |

Alexandre We used the existing wiring. Thanks so much for your reply. Thanks so much for your reply. I would prefer to keep using a Dolphin charger. Any recommendation on which one to use and not to use is welcome. Was it easy to install yourself? Or did y ou had to ask a technician? Since then we have sailed about 80,000 miles, circumnavigating the world in the sloop and then circumnavigating South America in the Super Maramu "Moon Dog" we have owned the past 12 years. In May I turned 81, and it is time to slow down the cruising and to go after the rest of the things on my "bucket list." "Moon Dog" was a fantastic boat for us, providing us many, many miles of great cruising. It was with tremendous reluctance that we decided to part with her, but she is just not the right boat for what we will be doing in the future. Still named "Moon Dog," she is now owned by Robert (Bob) and Marybeth Gray and now lies at the Erie Yacht Club in Erie, PA. Thanks very much to everyone in this owners' group for all the advice, support and friendship through the years. It has been great - I really enjoyed and appreciated it all. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Volvo TMD22a Intermittent electrical failure causing ...
alainfeuillet@...
Dear Pat,
the last time I could not start my TMD22, it was due to a spurious connection of a small diode connected to the starter solenoid. Not that easy to discover, because the failure was the breaking of a solder connection with a lug inside a heatshrink sleeve. The sleeve included diode, soldering and lug extremety. Only one possible cause. Wish you the best Alain (Pilgrim SM#26) |

John and Ruth, That's a very proud nautical record and I'm sure the new owners of Moon Dog will love her as much as you did. Hope you have a lot more fun over the next 40 years.
