Thanks Kent. I also called Amel to see if they have parts /or a alternate fix for it.
My guess is that the pump is no longer available and I will need a replacement. Since the boat is in FLA and I'm in Wash DC, my repair guy will do the work before I shove off to pick up the boat for the trip North to Annapolis. Aras

Chesapeake Bay Rendezvous
Patrick McAneny
Considering all the possible locations for a rendezvous and the
requirements of adequate anchorage ,scenic surroundings , restaurants , etc. I
have come to the conclusion that St. Michaels best fits the bill. I thought the
weekend of July 11-13 would be far enough out to allow everyone to make plans.
It also allows Aletes to get back from their trip to Maine in June and should
fall within the small window , between Kent resolving his present problems and
his future problems . Here is a suggested itinerary ,subject to changes made by
the group. Everyone tries to arrive by the late afternoon on Friday the 11th or
earlier . We would all anchor just outside the harbor along the SW shoreline .
Saturday about 11:30 - noon , Diane and I would invite everyone aboard for a pot
luck lunch . We have had as many as 20 aboard before for dinner and it worked
fine, we lined the food up on the aft deck buffet style and people sit along the
decks and cockpit. If we have more people we could raft another boat alongside,
although I am not a big fan of rafting. After lunch everybody or anybody who
would like ,could send the day ashore visiting the maritime museum , brewery ,
walk/shop in the beautiful little town. Then around 5 pm. we would gather again
on our boat or another boat for cocktails. We would then about 6:30 pm. dinghy
in to dinner at the Crab Claw restaurant , which can accommodate large
groups. One thing , they do not take credit cards , so have cash, I wonder why.
Then Sunday if the group wanted , we would leave Sunday morning and have a rally
down the Eastern Bay and over to Annapolis , where we would anchor in front of
the Academy . There is always dinghy races and much to watch. We could have
cocktails ,then do whatever people want, dine aboard , ashore whatever. Monday
morning we go our separate ways or maybe some will sail south together ,or stay
longer and enjoy Annapolis. Here is a list of owners to date that expressed
their plans to attend, if you are not on the list ,yet and want to join us
contact me. Aletes - Mike & Lauren , Shenanigans - Pat & Diane , TBD -
Gary & Robin , Bali Hai - Ric , Indecent - Stephanie , Lone Star - Craig
& Jan , Kristy - Kent , TBD - Eric & Viki , Moon Dog - John & Ruth ,
No Boat - Richard , Atman - Velt , Brevis - Sherman , Fiasco - Aras , So right
now it looks like we have 12 boats planning to attend . Diane and I thought if
we had half that many it would a great success and lots of fun. If anyone else
would like to join us , please contact me at sailw32@... , or if you have comments , so
as to keep the site free. Looking forward to meeting everyone , it should be
fun!
Smooth Sailing,

Shaft alternator & feathering prop
Having mentioned this in a recent post, I happened to come across the details in a FAQ on the Autostream site, for anyone interested.
"10) Can I run a shaft alternator? Yes, if reverse gear is engaged with the engine running then shifted to neutral, the propeller will not feather and the propelled shaft will rotate being driven by the propeller. To feather the propeller from this reverse configuration, drive the boat forward under engine power at a speed greater than the speed being sailed and follow the procedure as outlined in the answer to Question 8 "(which is to shift into forward, accelerate briefly, and then shut down the engine normally.) Cheers, Craig, svSangaris SN68

Investment casting - Yanmar Elbow & Autostream Prop
Great U-tube on "lost-wax" casting. Appropos of recent posts, this is also the technique they use for the Stainless Steel feathering propeller that Autostream makes, as it gives very precise finished dimensions. And, Bill, if you guys trek north along the Turkey coast, there are some neat ancient art pieces made from this technique in the museum in Samos. Not sure if Pliny and the gang made exhaust elbows, though.

Hello Jean Pierre,
Congratulations for thinking of buying an Amel SM. We have a SM and now we are in Göcek where we are doing some work with Riza (Arch, solar panels, rigging, etc etc...). Emek marine is specialized on fitting Amel boats in particular for circumnavigation. We are really pleased with the work he and his team are doing, very professional and organized. I will suggest to contact him for questions you might have before you will buy the boat. Riza Cagdas Emek Marine +90 2526452468 Cagdas@... Do not hesitate to contact me for more information. Surveyor in Crete.
Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>
Hello Amel Owners,
After years of reading every thread ... and saving my dosh, I am now in a position to buy an early SM. I've located one in Crete and I want a locally based person to complete the survey... reduced cost!! If issues appear, I would sail the boat to Emek to get the work done. (I've learned a lot from reading your collective adventures, including where the good boat yards are located) Thanks, Jean-Pierre |

I found this part for the Yanmar 100hp Turbo:
This states that it replaces Yanmar P/Ns 129673-13551, 13552. My original part was 129673-13550, but it was replaced by the above numbers. This is "Investment Cast" 316 Stainless and is 4.5 lbs and twice as thick as the original Yanmar fabrication.
If I were buying one of these today, I am sure that I would give this a try for $270 as the last one I bought from Yanmar cost me $1,000 in Thailand.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] finally bought an Amel
Look at Dennis' solution to the fresh water pump problems he had (Post #14750). My SM (#243-1999) also has the same A.M.F.A. pump as he replaced. Others have put on-demand pumps in as replacements and seem to be happy with them. So far my AMFA pump is 10+ years old and with regular maintenance and occasional tweaking of the air pressure and/or on/off pressure settings it has performed well. Kent SM243 Kristy From: "n33077@..." To: amelyachtowners@... Sent: Wednesday, April 16, 2014 9:26 AM Subject: Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] finally bought an Amel Thanks Kristy. The draws 6'6" measured. Book says it only draws 6' I just got the call that the water pump is indeed nearly dead. To the best of my knowledge the Sharki shares many of the same components as the Maramu's. So if by chance you know about the fresh water pump I'm all ears. My plan is to sail the outside up to the Chesapeake bay to Annapolis. Shouldn't take more than a week and I have the GS going for me. I'll spend this next year up there as I wrap up some things then go elsewhere. Aras

Sulajon SM # 347
John Folino <jfolino901@...>
I am selling my 2001
Amel Super Maramu 53' ketch docked in front of Johnny Hassan's at Nanny Cay Marina,
Tortola British Virgin Islands office for the past 12 years. She is hull #347
and very lightly used. Johnny has taken care of her since I sailed Sulajon from
Europe in 2002. She is fully equipped and maintained. She has never been
chartered, in fact I have always been her captain, no other person has ever
sailed her without me on board. She is a practically new example of an Amel SM
53'. The turbo Yanmar has approximately 930 hours of use. Johnny has a nearly
new 150% Genoa as I had a 110% jib made in 2003 and have used it ever
since. The balooner and all hardware, poles and lines were only used in the
Atlantic crossing. All system are in tip
top shape, maintained by the same crew for the past 12 years where I sailed from
6 weeks/season to as little as 2 weeks, otherwise the boat sat at the dock, or
on the hard. I am the first and only owner. I have two freezers beneath the
dinette, the 160 liter per hr water maker with spare filters, a large supply of
spare parts, a bow thruster with spare props, a RIB with a new motor, new
batteries, complete electronics with two autopilots. The boat has 3 zones of air conditioning, a 160 liter/hour fresh
water maker, a 7 KW generator, a bow thruster, a fixed fiberglass dodger with
an operable helm window, a bimini top, an extension with side curtains for cool
weather, numerous lockers and storage areas, a hard bottom dingy with a brand
new Tohatsu 6 HP outboard motor all suspended on stainless steel davits off of
the stern with a winch to assist in the lift. a walk in engine room, a
refrigerator and two refrigerator/freezers, roller furling jib and main sail,
all electrically operated, a windlass, a roler furling mizzen sail, spare sails
galore. There remains a couple zones of electric heat as part of the main
saloon and forward Vee berth areas, two heads with holding tanks, macerator
pumps, a dry, odor free bilge, several watertight bulkheads, two spare anchors
with rode, extensive tools and spare parts, a SSB, a radar, a GPS, full
electronics, an Imarsat mini M phone for
off shore use, a microwave oven, a washer and dryer. a dishwasher which I never
used once, pots, pans, plates, silverware, linens for 6 people, two laptops,
safety equipment including EPIRB, flares, hand held GPS, brand new batteries
(there are eight 6 volt house batteries and one 12 volt start battery), an
8 person off shore life raft just reconditioned and tested. A diving compressor with a regulator and 50'
of air supply hose and diving weights. A Sony TV with VCR & DVD. An AM/FM
radio with CD player and both cabin and cockpit speakers. Many tools and
miscellaneous items accumulated over 12 years. A Wirie internet broadband
booster/router. |

Re: Resolux interior lights
We have changed our boat to all LED lighting. I used all of the original Amel fixtures. I removed the guts and replaced them with warm colored LED's with built in drive electronics from a company called Marine Beam. It is a simple 2 wire hook up. Cost is $20-25 dollars per light fixture. The quality of the light color is wonderful. Not harsh like some LED's. With Marine Beam's built in drive electronics they are not sensitive to variation in voltage and are very radio quiet. I have no affiliation with Marine Beam...I am a very satisfied customer. So far 2 years of living aboard with no problems.

Re: finally bought an Amel
ericmeury@...
Congrats and welcome.
I'm a newer owner as well, but spent much time aboard kents boats (thanks kent) Not sure if the bilge pump is the same put i still have either the original or an exact replacement. (i also have a complete spare so if it goes) I do have what is marked as a rebuild kit for the bilge pump. Kent will attest that these are not that difficult to take apart. If the design is the same you will need to remove the float tube (gray tube) in engine room in front of the engine on the bulkhead and then you should be able to remove the pump. The pump will be located out of the water just next to it at eye level. If you need the rebuild kit for this pump (AGAIN if it is the same as the santorin) the rebuild kit is Reya Cannes with part number MARINA-K 219424. - Sorry i do not have the part number for the exact pump i have. if you do take the pump apart do not over tighten any screws when you put it back together. If you cannot repair or find the exact replacement, other owners have built a shelf that mounts to the same place as the original. The attach a new jabsco bilge pump in this location. You may or may not need to remove the float tube, but as long as you are down there you might as well, power wash the bilge (check to make sure the manual one works first), pump it completely dry and check to make sure the copper grounding strap is still attached. (there are some recent posts about this) Again all this assumes it is the same. I've been trolling this board for years and most of the posts are from SM owners and only a few sharki specific posting. But what is important to know is that the design theory has remained the same so if you get the concepts even it is from a SM owner you can pretty much figure it out for your boat. I'm still learning much about my boat. I keep the boat on the Potomac river where it meets the bay, so if you are heading up its a great little marina and cheap. (150 a month) |
