Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Prop Shaft Electrolysis
Interesting Eric, I've never gotten a year from my zincs. I may have a stray current on my boat. Will have an electrician check it out. Would appreciate any advice on how that is done. Kent

Hmmm. I hadn't thought of trying to cut it into pieces. I can only get one arm and my head in there, so trying to cut it seems very awkward at best. I think when I turned the chain around a few years ago I should have had it re galvanized then ...I left 100 ft of poorly protected chain in the locker which is rarely used. Enough said! Kent

Do you have access to a tool rental shop? You might try to find an electric "chipper". It's a small, hand-held hammer that accepts various bits. Often used to remove tile from counters/floors. I know you said you have limited access but maybe you can use it with one hand and not have to do the swinging action with a mallet. Another idea is to not use your windlass to haul the chain out but use block and tackle back to your winch. Lifting the whole mass to the top of the chain locker and then dropping it a few times might break it up.

Re: Rusted Ball of Chain in the Chain Locker
Bummer, Kent - I'd try 10 or so gallons of muriatic acid (HCl) - block off the drain first so it will pool around the chain. Fumes can be aired with a fan as you go.
If that doesn't work, you could use a "multi-tool" high-speed oscillating sander with a cutting blade and cut out the bottom of one of your bow lockers about 3 or 4 inches from the side of the hull in a nice square-ish or trapezoidal shape. That will give you a big access hole and you can get a hammer on the corroded chain. When you're done, you can then easily screw in some wood supports around the underside of the perimeter to hold up the cut-out piece and either glass it back in or leave it as a removable chain locker access cover - could be handy for cleaning in the future and it won't compromise any structural strength. (I had to do this on my boat, not because of rusted chain, but because the unvented chain locker caused the plywood locker floor to rot out. It's really a good fix. I did have a louvered cover made for the chain locker access panel to give it fresh air and only use the solid one when we go off-shore.) What in the world do you think caused this? Just age on failed galvanized chain? Maybe a good argument for stainless chain. Rots 'o ruck! Gear gun: not sure if it will work in your particular case, but I could once separate a few parts "glued" due to rust. Concentrade heat will dilate the pieces and eventuallly break a few links loose. Electrolysis: it envolves putting the rust part into a Electrolyte solution, using a plastic container. You will need a sacrifice metal and a battery.
If you think you have enough room for this, and if everything else fails, let me know and I will try to guide you. (I will have to find a way to do this in English!) Em sexta-feira, 28 de março de 2014, Kent Robertson <karkauai@...> escreveu:

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Rusted Ball of Chain in the Chain Locker

Kent, I do remember having ¼ inch of battery acid in the battery box at one time. It did no harm to the fiberglass. However that is sulphuric acid and you would be using hydrochloric. My only thought is to get a good respirator and a fan to blow air into the anchor locker and add pounds of borax near the drain of the anchor locker and a bunch in the bilge in the engine room. Then use the hydrochloric acid.
Last hope is to use a cutoff grinder and cut the ball into pieces small enough to come out of the entry port. If I had this problem I would probably just cut the chain up and get a new chain.
