I installed the AIS on Cream Puff and used a SIMRAD NSPL-400 AIS Splitter. I have used it for two years with no notable performance affects on the VHF or the AIS. This was a more cost effective alternative than installing a second antenna. The VHF has the priority so the splitter will cease to transmit when the VHF is transmitting. Also, my thought process was if the splitter did interfere with the operation of the VHF, I could always add the second antenna later and sell the splitter on eBay. But, since I am happy with it, I will keep it.
Hope this helps,
Best regards,

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] ais antenna
Oooh! I wondered what that birdcage thing was. I guess I need to trace the wire to find the inside end. I have the TV hooked up to some existing coax where the previous owner had a TV. Seems I got a good picture, I moved onto the next project and didn’t look back.

Pat, I thought that bird cage thing was a TV antenna, but maybe it was a combo TV and AM/FM Radio that Amel used if you bought the TV option. BeBe did not have that antenna or the TV option...so AIS was easy for me.
Sorry my suggestion does not work for you.

Let me give you another alternative: Disconnect the AM/FM radio antenna at the back of the radio and either cut the connector off and place the correct connector for your AIR transponder. This is what I did nad it works perfect. I am guessing that Amel used a Marine VHF antenna for the AM/FM antenna on BeBe...they look identical at the top of the mast. I still get local FM reception without an antenna, but you can buy a short rubber car radio antenna and place it inside the cabinet where the radio is located.

Hi Pat with use a splitter on our AIS very successfully over the last few years. We thought about on second antenna and then decided to simply wire in the splitter aligned to the GPS in a line that allows it to go chart plotter using a blk box. When I had my AIS Transpondeur installed, i was told the same, that I need a seperate antenna compatible with AIS (transpondeur). Unfortunately my antenna was not put on the top of the mizen mast where it would have longer range. Still I am able to see ships at least 12 miles. So the only thing I would do differently is to locate in top of the mizzen. Sincerely, Alexandre -------------------------------------------- On Thu, 3/20/14, sailw32@... <sailw32@...> wrote:

Thanks Danny
I'll source the bushions and the vetus mounts to have at hand for the job if required. But its the round mounts that seperate the box frame from the GRP, that are hard to identify. Its these ones that Amel said they made alterations to before quoting the price of €168. Regards Joe |

Hi, do you need to replace the whole vetus unit or is it just the rubber bushes that need replacing. If so they are available from vetus. Should be 25mm, so it's a Vetus Type 6 K051 you want. Double check with supplier that it's the 4" flange to use on our Hurth 250 tranny - I think it is. Don't believe you said where you are, but I assume its UK or Ireland - ASAP Supplies in England shows these on line for 204 GBP or about 245 Euro compared with Amel's 331 Euro. They also show Vetus K75 engine mounts for 40GBP. That's about 48Euro compared with Amel's price of 168 - wow! You may want to wait to inspect the engine and see if it is, indeed, a mounting - just a firm wiggle of the engine will immediately show you which mount is gone, if that's the case. Double check the K75 - I'm not positive, but it should do. I didn't see your hull number on your posting, but if it's 20+ years old and you've not
replaced them, it's pretty cheap preventive maintenance (if you don't buy from Amel) and easy to do. Cheers, Craig s/v Sangaris, SN#68

Sorry, Joe. When I go to Italy and shop, I get my VAT back at the airport. And when I have had things shipped into the US, they go out VAT free, with duty ( at very low rates fir the most part) in the US. But if you are going EU to EU, i understand that the VAT must be paid. God bless the tax man, whatever country he is in! Stephanie DiBelardino On Mar 18, 2014, at 4:18 PM, <joemac4sail@...> wrote:

Hi Stephanie
Unfortunately VAT has to be paid. Whether its in Ireland or France its still within the EU and as the sale is to a private individual rather than a company, Amel have to account for the VAT. I know that for parts imported from the USA, the Postman will have his hand out for the government tax. Regards Joe |

I don't know about the Santorin if this is the same as for the SM2K, but the Vetus coupling are Flexible coupling type 6. They were very cheap to buy in the US, but were special order. Differently, I was not able to install them, as there is a metalic bar that won't allow the engine to slide back, etc. (that's an other story). One of the jobs that appeared on the last day of the season as we were lifting out for the winter was a loss of drive and excessive vibration of the engine. Due the need to rush to catch a flight home, there was no proper research done to find the cause of the problem. Hopefully its a faulty engine mount or a failure of the flexi drive, and not something more serious. But in the course of stocking up the parts required for the Spring service, Amel in France provided me with the cost for one of the mounts, that fits under the metal box frame of 168 euros. Adding Vat and postage this would put up the cost to around 800 euros for a set of 4 mounts. Amel were able to provide me with the Flexi Drive at a cost of 331 euros excluding vat and postage, so you see where the overall price is going . If anyone has the manufacturer and part number of the the various mounts required, at least then I can make a comparison of the cost. As to the Vetus Flexi Drive the only difference between the models are the various shaft sizes. So if someone could provide me with the model number or with the size of the drive shaft, It would be a great help Regards Joe McDonnell |
