Re: [Amel] What to use to treat the interior of the Bow Thruster?

Hi Alexandre

On Island Pearl II I have put the normal Micron 66 antifoul into this area too, ie same as bottom paint. This last time I had some special  "Propspeed"  left over after completing the prop service so tried that instead. Will see how that went at next haul out but the normal Micron 66 always works very well indeed in the bow thruster inside cavity.

Kent, I was just speaking with Richard yesterday and he suggested to mix the chemicals with the pink, potable antifreeze meant for water systems to keep the membranes from freezing.

Pat,

I know little about prepping for a winter freeze, but I would think that the small amount of Sodium Metabisulfite used with fresh water would not keep the solution from freezing.

This is what Dessalator says:

How to winterize your watermaker:

Several solutions are possible:

  1. If someone regularly comes on board, rinsing with the three-way valve on the pre pump will be sufficient; this should be carried out while the watermaker is idle.
  2. For extended periods (5 to 6 months) of storage, we have developed a sterilizing cartridge (see the page sterilizing cartridge).
  3. FREEZING CONDITIONS: If the boat stays in a very cold region, please take a bucket containing 8 litres of warm fresh water mixed with one glycerine litre (you will find it in a drugstore) and let the seawater inlet hose suck up the mixture by starting the watermaker without pressure. You should then empty the flow meter tube on the control panel by blowing into the blue hose connected to the membranes. In normal winter conditions, only empty the flow meter tube and use the sterilizing cartridge ST2.
I bought a 24 volt timer and a 24 volt valve that I plan to install to rinse the membranes when I am away for longer than 1 month.

Other than that, I am not able to help.

The bumpers belongs to us and Amber of Ljungen. We renovated them last winter (2012-2013). Ambers bumber had only lost here paint so that one was just sanded and then painted.

Ours was more damaged, cracks that we filled with Sikaflex (one that is both possible to sand and paint don't remember the number) and underneath there was a big piece missing. That hole was filled with a piece from a flat-fender, glued into place with Sikaflex.

After sanding the bumpers were painted with Ovatrol Deco. They became as good as new. If you look close at ours you can see where the repairs was done, but not many comes that close.

We still have the original struts.  It was initially barely perceptible but it is now clearly visible (st side more so than pt).

I would also be interested to hear if anyone has dealt with this or has any bright ideas.

Hi Bill,

Could it be the you changed the gas struts and the new ones are stronger than the originals?

I replaced mine last years and was surprised to find out just how powerful they are.

I should have stated that the bulge is on the top of the engine room hatch cover. The faux teak is bulging up slightly.

As anyone else experienced this and if so, what did you do about it.

Bill,

Bamboozle has been developing the same problem bulge problem in our engine room hatch/cockpit floor over the last 12 months and interestingly we are SM hull number 388 so just one after Bebe.

We still have the original struts.  It was initially barely perceptible but it is now clearly visible (st side more so than pt).

I would also be interested to hear if anyone has dealt with this or has any bright ideas.

Re: [Amel] Cockpit enclosure

Colin - ex SV Island Pearl

Hi All

I agree with the airflow suggestion which is essential and also make this see through glass/perspex to be able to look up to view the sails when under way. We had a hard top bimini on a previous yacht and loved it, but on the Super Maramu  we always fold back the flexible bimini when coming in or out of tight marina berths due to the large size of this boat. In this way we feel in better control as we can see all round and also quickly jump off to tie up when stopping at a berth when single handed or with just one other crew member.

These would be our main concerns and we would certainly put the roof a little higher with flexible zip up window (above the existing hard top) to see out when standing at the helm. Also we would also ensure easy unrestricted access out the sides and to the winches, including at the mizzen.

Good luck with the project and we would all be most interested to see final pictures and measurements of the final design when built.

Bit of advice, make sure you have a hatch in the hard Bimini, and /or  an opening front window to allow airflow in the summer heat.  It can get really hot with no airflow  under a solid Bimini .

Amel hatches open forwards to allow wind flow. Some European  boats have aft opening hatches, hinges on forward, and not good for airflow in warmer climes.

Hi Everyone,

I just put photos of my cockpit enclosure.  We use it all winter and in summer we leave the top from the bimini to the mizzen bar up as well to have better shade.  I'm looking to have a fibreglass hardtop made as it gets hot underneath and would be the ideal for solar panels.

Hi Andrew,

I'm still talking with the fibreglass man here but so far I haven't seen examples of his actual work and I don't know if I'll go ahead with it without knowing how good his work is.

I see you were also asking for pictures of a cockpit enclosure.  I've posted some pictures of ours in the photo section.  You can see how the rear end is attached to the mizzen shrouds and boom.

I'm in Lefkas, Greece and am contemplating having a hardtop bimini made in fibreglass.  As a lot of expense goes into building the original mould, is anybody interested in having one built as well?  Alternatively, has anyone had one built for a Super Maramu, where I could order one?
