Ann-Sofie, Go to one of your Facebook groups. Look for the search icon (magnifying glass on the right side about 5cm from the top...click on it. It will search messages, but not photos.

I own a Mango with a Nirvana rigging since 2005.   My main mast has two spreader levels and the mast does not curve under strong wind pressure. I have notice that on an earlier Mango, without a furling mainsail, there is only one spreader level. However I do not know if this is an original mast. I could, if it seems useful, contact its french owner...  Yes the Mango with electric furlers does seem to roll more than the Super Maramu in heavy swells.  In Transatlantic crossing, I install the the life raft on the rear roof, so it does add more weight above the waterline, but I feel that,
in an emergency, I could not extract the raft out of its locker very rapidly...  I understand, from speaking with Mr Selo, a few years ago, that Mangos with electric furling had a heavier metal keel, than the earlier Mangos without electric furlers.  I do not know what Mr T wishes to know about Nirvana riggings, please advise. I have replaced half of the wiring in the rigging, but, I often felt that my original 1985 rigging replaced on the advice of surveyors, was more sturdy than the replacement. One characteristic of the original Nirvana rigging is that the date of fabrication of each swage on its wire is engraved on the fitting. as a long time SM owner (since 1995 same boat) and several atlantic crossing, I'm glad to give you my input concerning your question: "Is the boat rolling on long ocean waves going downwind as it is quite narrow for its length?" Not so much, specially with the genua and balloner rolled out with the two poles the boat is well stabilized. 80 hp enough ? Yes ! Ann-Sofie, Yes you can search messages in a Facebook group and it works well, but you cannot search photo names. We can overcome that by having pre-determined photo album names. Kent, I agree with what you say, but the reality is that we would need 500 members paying $100 a year to have a minimal budget. We would also have to have someone make the decisions because with 500 people making decisions, we would need a serious budget and staff. All, The issue is that we are a group of Amel owners loosely tied together and unless somebody does something like Closereach did when he started this group, nothing will happen.
I encourage anyone to do something. I am going to put together a FaceBook Group. As much as I dislike FaceBook, its Group structure has most of the things we need. My plan is to be up and running by early December with a lot, if not all, of the information in photos and files migrated to the new Group. I will not be able to migrate messages, but the Amel Group messages will be where they are now for searching until Yahoo makes another change...by then, it may not make a difference.
I will let you know when I have it ready. Hopefully, someone else will do something also, and frankly I hope it is better than what I put together...that way we can choose the best.

Freezer stop working...

I noted the fan was making a lot of noise, then now doesn't turn. I switch it off, then back on and nothing. Any suggestion? If this sounds like something we want to try, let me here from some of the 'principles' in the group (folks that are frequent posters) and I will pursue it. A full-up bulletin board is a bit of maintenance (yes, we'll need a couple of moderators) but it will have the capabilities for search, storage, albums, etc. as well as regular upgrades.Â

Another possible route might be to employ someone with the
necessary knowledge and experience to make a suitable website for us. What I
have in mind is that the couple who bought my last boat and sailed it around the
world had a website jasonandfionaatgetjealous.com. It
was made up for them by a friend who was also a keen sailor and who crewed with
them on their first Atlantic crossing. His business is www.getjealous.com and as he has been
running it for at least a dozen years I believe that he is competent.He should
be well able to create a site with all the bells and whistles that we
would reasonably need.
I do not know him personally and as I am busy putting Bali Hai
on the market to mark my eightieth birthday I am not able to do more than make a
suggestion that perhaps you or another owner might wish to explore.

I think the ability to post by email is important. I'm not a FaceBook
user but would be happy to join if that's what we decide to do.
If we had our own website, we could make it do what ever we wanted it to
do. I don't know the difference in price between a proprietary website and
a google, yahoo, or Facebook group, but it would be with something to have
exactly what we want and control over what happens to it.

(There are others like it: sailnet.com (which is complex), advrider.com, rv.net/forum and a host of others). I am a member there and know the board's operator. I have webspace and bandwidth (well, it would cost extra per month)  and could host the owner's group on a system like this one (in a couple of months).Â

Hi Bill Another posibility is Google+. We could make a distribution group and use Picasaweb for the pictures. Search option would not be a problem by Google :-) With Google+ we could continue to send emails. I dont know Google+ and I dont know if there is a posibility to login only with read rights (not that someone will delete all massages...).Â

I joined the French Amel Owners Group, and browsed their website. It is a nice site, but there is no provision for maintaining a database of photos or files to share among the members. I did like the categories he used for the forum, but in looking further in the site I found that some members post electrical messages in the engine forum, etc. I take back my suggestion for a merger, but I am toying with a FaceBook Group page. It has Photos and Files which are shared...it has messages which are shared and I believe that you can get email notification of new messages. I also like the way the moderator can set up predetermined photo albums for members to add photos...as an example this will mean that all engine related photos would be in one album... The downside to some people is that you will not be able to respond to a new posting via email and you will have to be a FaceBook user, but that may not be an issue. Comments? Bill BeBe, #387 |

If you are buying in St. Martin, the small franchise Budget Marine store on the French side sometimes has deals on Micron in 20 liter pails. They owner's name is Guy. It works perfectly for 2 good coats all over and a third coat from the waterline down about 12-18", the leading edge of keel and skeg, and all of the rudder. We usually have about a liter or so left over which we discard.  We generally haul every 2 years.
