Re: [Amel] 220 Volt engine room fan not working - FIXED

Kent Robertson

I don't fully understand the two-charger scenario, Bill, but when I replaced both the old chargers (one failed in Trinidad, the other when I got back to the US) I was told that I could run both simultaneously to more rapidly charge the bank with the generator in bulk charging mode.  And in fact it does charge at ~85A when using both the 60A and 30A chargers on a battery bank that is about 35% depleted.  When the batteries are more fully charged, the amperage drops appropriately.  After the Amperage drops below 60, I turn the 30 amp charger off and just use the 60A one.  The 60A charger is a Sterling smart charger, and the 30 A is a Charles.

If anyone knows why they don't sense each other's charge and limit the output, I'd like to hear the explanation (in layman's terms, please :)

I thought the 12 volt fan just ran of
the Yanmar.
You might check the continuity of wires or possibly there is
a fuse.

       Hi,

The 220 volt fan is on top of the 12 volt exhaust fan on
Kimberlite.

Kind of strange setup but it works.

When the genset is on the 220 volt fan blows the exhaust
through the 12 volt

fan.

When the engine is on the 12 volt fan sucks the air
through
the 220 volt

fan.

I believe there is a solenoid that operates the 220 volt
exhaust fan. You

might check that.

Hi some of the Onan gen sets do NOT have a 12 volt

alternator so they don't run the fans. You either put a

resistor on a line to the fans from the 24 volt out put
from

the charger or an alternator on the gen set. When we

replaced the Onan with Bata Marine it came with a small

alternator that now charges the starting battery and runs

the fans. Good luck.

Re: [Amel] Turbo desapointment... Vetus - where to leverage to move engine?

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Hello again Danny & Forum,

Sorry to bother you again.
So, I looked at the Vetus flexible coupler and noted some play, so I have to change it.
It doesn't look too complicated, just intimidating I guess for the first time.

Where did you take leverage from?
Which part on the engine did you use to push and which part of the rest did you use to leverage?

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Hi
Alexandre,that about covers it
except in my case two of the bolts securing the vetus were
damaged. It was not possible to withdraw them without
removing the casting from the C drive shaft so I cut the
heads
off with a hack saw and replaced them with bolts with
a nut at each end. That was three years ago and I have had
no
trouble since. If you do
replace the bolts do not use mild steel bolts, use
high
tensile bolts which will not stretch under
load.Kind

Replacing the rubber bushes is very straight forward, I
did
not replace the
circular housing, no need to. However if you did want to
it
is a more difficult
job which entails removing the keyed connection from the
input shaft to the C
drive. With heat from a gas torch this would probably be
possible but in my case
I was in an island port, the housing was in good order so
I
just replaced the
rubber bushes.
A straightforward job with no major hidden problems that I
encountered. My
engine is the Volvo TMD 22 and I don't have a shaft
brake or alternator.
The process: Four bolts through the vetus unit ("the
circular box") they are
pinned at one
end so they don't turn. Undo the nuts. To
get the nuts off you may
have to leave the last few threads until the motor is
moved
slightly to make
room. To move the engine. Amel
have designed a great system. the engine is
bolted to two steel angle iron engine bearers with 4 large
bolts. Remove those
bolts. In my case there were no wires or cables or pipesI
had to remove before I
moved the motor. There was sufficient movement available.
But check carefully.
In my case also there was enough flex in the engine
exhaust
system that I did
nothing to that either. Anyway check carefully. Then it is
a
simple process to
just slide the motor aft along those angle iron bearers
untill the vetus unit
separates. From memory no more than 50mm (2 inches) You
will
see when the vetus
is separated there is a cross (four pins) onto which the
rubber bushes slide.
Remove the old ones
and
slide on the new. Slide the motor back into place,
entering
the bolts through
the vetus as you go. Start the nuts. Then position the
motor
so the mounting
holes line up, replace the mount bolts and tighten.
The amel system in
unique in my experience and makes this job so easy.
In
most
boats the engine is secured directly to the flexible
engine
mounts so if you
need to move it there is a major problem as the motor
drops
as soon as you move
it off the mounts. Amel, by putting the flexible mounts
under this angle iron
bearer has made moving the motor so easy.
However things to watch for. I used a piece of 50mm x 75mm
(2 x 3 to
americans) about a metre long ( 3 feet) as a lever. Move
the
engine little by
little watching that it is sliding straight along the
bearer. The four bearer
bolts. Two are quite easy to access. the near side. the
other two you have
to
lean over the engine to reach them. The aft starboard is
the
least accessible.
replace it first. Do not tighten any until they are all in
place. I dropped them
in from the top and put the nuts at the bottom. In my case
the holes were not
perfectly positioned so I could get three in easily
  but the fourth bound
slightly in the hole. I left the other three loose and
used
a large pin punch to
to wriggle in the hole to position it. I didn't fully
tighten the vetus bolts
until the motor was almost back in place but I found it
easier to get the engine
bearer bolts through after I fully tightened the 4 vetus
bolts. Fully tighten
the vetus bolts. Fully
tighten the engine bearer bolts. Check very carefully all
around the engine to
ensure you have not damaged or displaced any thing, which
you won't have done
if you did your pre job inspection well and moved the
motor
carefully.
Shaft alignment: Not an issue for this job. The engine is
set exactly by the
preset position of the bolt holes in the engine bearers..
In
my case there was
one, and one only place the motor could sit and once the
bolts were tight that
was it.

Check the bolts through the vetus and the engine bearers
after a few hours
running to
ensure they remain tight and then for me they are one
of my
engine
room checks I do every day before starting the motor.

Re: [Amel] 220 Volt engine room fan not working - FIXED

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good morning Bill,

Always nice to hear from you.

About the battery chargers, on the owner manual, section 2.1 it says (in a red box):

-At the Harbour: 30 A charger
-In the open sea: 50 A charger + 30 A charger (1 min after)

Even though I was tied at the dock, I simulated to be at sea (shore power disconnected), had batteries down to 70%, so I run the genset to charge them, plus use Air COnditionning, do some work, try the microwave (works), try the dishwasher (does not work well - forum question for later).

Since at the dock (under shore power), I only use the 30 Amp charger, I was happy to see the 50 A charger showing a "net" 39 amp charge, then when I added the 30 A, saw a 69 Amp "net" charge.

2 hours later, once the batteries were charged at 90% and the charge was only 20 or so Amp, I switch off the small charger.

After 3 hours, I was happy with the test, switch off genset and went back to shore power.

Regarding the 220 Volt fan, I totally agree, very weak fan...

I am envious of your higher rpm!!!
I really thought cleaning the turbo the way I did was good enough:
http://nikimat.com/volvo_tmd22_turbo.html

What is the "nozzles"?

Always nice to hear from you! Hello to Judy! Sincerely, Alexandre

Re: [Amel] Turbo desapointment...

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Hello Kent,

I remember reading your posts.

How many hours did it had? I was told many times, the engine easily last 10.000 hours.

I need to talk to the previous owner again, as I thought he was able to reach 2800 rpm.

I will look at my fixed prop.

I am actually using Bank Sail to restich my sails, they said they did sails for 2 Super Maramu, one being yours.

Small world! Thanks again, sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Alexandre,

I spent about $6000 over a three year period trying to
figure out why my Volvo wouldn't get up to speed.  All
cylinders checked for compression, fuel pump and injectors
removed and checked by Volvo, Timing belt changed and reset,
turbo cleaned and then replaced, fuel lines and tank
cleaned, filters changed, hull and prop cleaned numerous
times after each item done.  Every mechanic said the engine
was fine.

A year and a half after the prop was changed (and all was
working as it should), we saw oil in the exhaust and lost
power dramatically.  It turned out to be a cracked block.
Rather than spend any more money on that engine, I
repowered.  The old Volvo was sold for parts by the
mechanic who put the new Yanmar in for me and I received a
check for $1500.

I see you are in the Galveston area.  I bought my boat on
Lake Texoma between Texas and Oklahoma, shipped it to
Galveston and did my first sail to Key West.

I probably have the new pitch as recommended by the prop
shop on the boat, but any prop shop can take your boat's
dimensions, weight, hull type, and engine information and
recommend a prop size and pitch for you.  There are tables
on the internet that you can use to make the calculations
yourself.

I would first take your fixed spare in and have it
measured.  If the prop shop's tables say it is
overpropped for your boat, I can ship my cut down, repitched
one to you and you can send me yours.

It will be a month or so before I can get to it, and I
don't have any idea how much it would cost.  I think
the altering of my spare cost about $300 if I remember
correctly.

Good evening Kent & Amel Forum,

I remember reading your post...

Looks like I have the same problem.

Just like you, I am able to reach high rpm at the dock (was
scarred to try over 2500 rpm) but not at sea.

Out of curiosity, how come your Volvo broke down? (gave up
the ghost)

I am just concerned the engine didn't like such increase
in rpm...

Where do I find the size and pitch recommendations for my
boat?

I could be interested in your cut down fix prop.

Thanks again for your help, sincerely, Alexandre

Look for my post...both my Autoprop and my spare

prop were over propped for the Volvo TMD22 as they were

supplied by Amel. I gave the Autoprop numbers to the

Autoprop dealer and he said that prop was recommended for

the SM with 100 HP Yanmar. I put the spare prop on the
boat

and there was no increase in rpm. I then had a reputable

prop shop in Norfolk measure the pitch on the spare

prop...it too was over propped for the VolvoTMD22. I had

the spare cut down to 19" dia and repitched as per the

prop shop tables and recommendation...voila! 3000 rpm.

When you rev the engine up while tied to the dock, the

Autoprop will find a lesser pitch than when you are at
speed

and cruising. Even with the over propped Autoprop I was

able to see 2800 rpm when tied to the dock or temporarily

when goosing the engine coming into the dock...bit only got

2200-2300 when cruising.

I got a maxprop sized and pitched per the maxprop

recommendations for my boat, and for a season got 3000 rpms

before my Volvo gave up the ghost. Now have Yanmar 110 HP

and was able to adjust the maxprop enough to accommodate
the

new engine.

Have Autoprop confirm the size and pitch of your primary,

and take your spare fixed prop to a prop shop to have it

measured and compared to recommendations for your boat. I

still have the cut-down fixed prop if you want to try it on

your boat. It's in Brunswick, GA but I can ship it to

you if you'd like.

Re: [Amel] 220 Volt engine room fan not working - FIXED

Judy and Bill aboard SV BeBe <yahoogroups@...>

Alex,

I am not sure how your house batteries are setup and your chargers, but I cannot imagine any setup that would allow for two battery chargers to be used with one bank of batteries. I think that the batteries will never get fully charged because one charger would sense the charging of the other charger and go to float. The same with the other charger.

Anyway, just my comment on your statement about running 2 chargers.

I am glad you found the fuse on the 220v fan. I have my doubts about the output of our 220v fan...it seems to be weak.

I am not that fluent on your engine, but just pulled the injectors, exhaust elbow and turbo on the 100hp Yanmar. I was experiencing lower RPM. I found a dirty turbo that needed serious cleaning and I suspected fouled injectors, but found that the nozzles needed replacing. I also found leaks in the weld joints of the Yanmar elbow which we replaced about 1,200 hours ago. I had a 316 polished stainless elbow fabricated at Emek Marine in Turkey for half the Yanmar price in Turkey. With a cleaned turbo, new nozzles and a new elbow, we are back in high RPM territory.

Best,

Bill

Do you happend to know where the solenoide is?

When we

replaced the Onan with Bata Marine it came with a small

alternator that now charges the starting battery and runs

the fans. Good luck.

Re: [Amel] Chain too long to be regalvanized...

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good morning Colin & Lauren,

I believe it is the original chain, but am not 100% sure, as I have a second/smaller chain on board.

It was definitely very physical because of the weight (200 Kg / 450 lbs) of the chain (plus the anchor).
I didn't want to take a chance scratching the deck (of the boat), so I used my ski boat under the bow.

Looking back, I wish I had ask/hire someone (that really knows what to look for) coming over and just lower the chain in the water as he/she inspect it.

http://nikimat.com/anchor_chain.html

Now have to put it back!

Does anyone has 2 anchors on the bow?
My second anchor is in the forward storage.
Would love to see some pictures, know if there is ebough space, if 1 needs to be lower before the other one, etc.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Re: [Amel] Turbo desapointment...

Colin - ex SV Island Pearl

What is the shaft size on the Super Maramu 2000?

I mention this since I have a spare newly reconditioned H6 - 10 Hub
Autoprop RH of size 504mm which was built for my last boat (Island Packet
40) with a 1.25 inch prop shaft with standard SAE Taper. If this slightly
smaller H6 Hub autoprop fits someone's Volvo powered Amel then I would be
prepared to part with it for about half the price of a new one.

I ordered this for the Island Packet however despite many tests and e-mails
backwards and forwards between Island Packet Yachts and Bruntons/Auto-Prop
head office technical department we simply could not get the prop to
function correctly behind the full keel of the Island Packet. It is
therefore sitting in new condition on our boat unused. Given we are
fortunate to have the 75HP Yanmar which revs easily to 3400 and 9.5kts boat
speed we do not have any use for the smaller newly reconditioned auto-prop.

If it fits someone's boat let me know, however freight from Australia could
be expensive so if it fits the Amel shafts, it would probably be better for
someone who is sailing past Australian waters.

Volvo wouldn't get up to speed. All cylinders checked for compression,
fuel pump and injectors removed and checked by Volvo, Timing belt changed
and reset, turbo cleaned and then replaced, fuel lines and tank cleaned,
filters changed, hull and prop cleaned numerous times after each item
done. Every mechanic said the engine was fine.

A year and a half after the prop was changed (and all was working as it
should), we saw oil in the exhaust and lost power dramatically. It turned
out to be a cracked block. Rather than spend any more money on that
engine, I repowered. The old Volvo was sold for parts by the mechanic who
put the new Yanmar in for me and I received a check for $1500.

I see you are in the Galveston area. I bought my boat on Lake Texoma
between Texas and Oklahoma, shipped it to Galveston and did my first sail
to Key West.

I probably have the new pitch as recommended by the prop shop on the boat,
but any prop shop can take your boat's dimensions, weight, hull type, and
engine information and recommend a prop size and pitch for you. There are
tables on the internet that you can use to make the calculations yourself.

I would first take your fixed spare in and have it measured. If the prop
shop's tables say it is overpropped for your boat, I can ship my cut down,
repitched one to you and you can send me yours.
It will be a month or so before I can get to it, and I don't have any idea
how much it would cost. I think the altering of my spare cost about $300
if I remember correctly.

prop were over propped for the Volvo TMD22 as they were
supplied by Amel. I gave the Autoprop numbers to the
Autoprop dealer and he said that prop was recommended for
the SM with 100 HP Yanmar. I put the spare prop on the boat
and there was no increase in rpm. I then had a reputable
prop shop in Norfolk measure the pitch on the spare
prop...it too was over propped for the VolvoTMD22. I had
the spare cut down to 19" dia and repitched as per the
prop shop tables and recommendation...voila! 3000 rpm.

When you rev the engine up while tied to the dock, the
Autoprop will find a lesser pitch than when you are at speed
and cruising.

Now have Yanmar 110 HP
and was able to adjust the maxprop enough to accommodate the

Hi you may want to bleed the injectors first. Then
change the prop to the 3 blade spare. Should the
problem

continue; By doing these two changes you will have
isolated

the transmission system from the engine.

Re: [Amel] Chain too long to be regalvanized...

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good morning Ian,

I was very surprised as well, especially since Houston is the 4th largest city and the 3rd or 4th concentration of boat.
Here the cost per pound is $0.75 so 200 kg or 450 lbs would have cost $300 to $350.
They would not pick up, unless the weight is 2500 Lbs.

I totally agree additional weight on the bow makes the boat rides much better.
After I took delivery, I emptied absolutely everything, and noted a lot of Lee Helm, which decreased as I reloaded.

I tested the sonar in the slip, I could see the chain up and down!
Saturday when I went out, did not anchor (was under the turbo desapointment).

Still very confused with this turbo issue, and the slight wobbling/vibration...

Sincerely, Alexandre

Alexandre,

I find this strange. I had my 90M chain re-galvanised in
Nicosia last

year for EUR270 including picking up from the marina and
return. I am

thinking of going to a 100M chain when I come to replace it
for I found

the extra weight in the bow has improved the boat in rough
short seas.

Hardly any more slamming and the boat speed seems to stay up
better. The

boot top still isn't right though! I shall have it
re-aligned next time

I repaint the bottom.

Anyway, glad your chain is OK. How did the sonar test work
out? As for

your turbo problem, I would have sworn that the probable
cause would

have been a dirty prop. But your diver says it's clean.
I need to clean

mine about every 3 months.

Good morning Eric,

I run out of time and did not check if the second fan (which I think is a 24 Volt and not a 12 Volt) is working when I run the engine.
I will do that later on this week.

Hi,

The 220 volt fan is on top of the 12 volt exhaust fan on

Kimberlite.

Kind of strange setup but it works.

When the genset is on the 220 volt fan blows the exhaust

Hi some of the Onan gen sets do NOT have a 12 volt

alternator so they don't run the fans. You either put a

resistor on a line to the fans from the 24 volt out put

the charger or an alternator on the gen set. When we

Good morning Anne and John,

One of my anchor (Spade) has a lot of rust and was told twice it needs to be regalvanized, since the galvanizing company have a minimum order/weight, I thought I would bring everything... The first company couldn't do the chain, becausethey didn't had the basket to "centrifuge the chain. The second company had the basket, but as I mentionned too small.

Hello Alex, Why did you think it needed
regalvanising and why did they think you were wrong?

We had our 80 mtr chain hot dip galvanised in Spain about
four years ago and it is still perfect but only used for 2/3
months of the year. To do it they did not have a tank 81
metres deep so they made a number of hooks out of strong
wire and looped the chain so that was shorter than the tank.
It was very hot when it came out!

I thought the 12 volt fan just ran of
the Yanmar.
You might check the continuity of wires or possibly there is
a fuse.

Is there 1 for the 12 volt and 1 for the 220 volt?

Thanks in advance, Alexandre

Hi,

The 220 volt fan is on top of the 12 volt exhaust fan on
Kimberlite.

Kind of strange setup but it works.

When the genset is on the 220 volt fan blows the exhaust
through the 12 volt

fan.

When the engine is on the 12 volt fan sucks the air
through
the 220 volt

fan.

I believe there is a solenoid that operates the 220 volt
exhaust fan. You

might check that.

Hello Richard,

But the fan in the engine compartment is 220 Volt. I
thought
it was supposed

to start when the genset was on?

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Hi some of the Onan gen sets do NOT have a 12 volt

alternator so they don't run the fans. You either put a

resistor on a line to the fans from the 24 volt out put
from

the charger or an alternator on the gen set. When we

replaced the Onan with Bata Marine it came with a small

alternator that now charges the starting battery and runs

the fans. Good luck.

Does the 12 volt fan work when the propulsion engine is on?

Hello Eric & Amel Forum

I found a little fuse that was defective!!!

So now the 220 Volt fan is working!

Next week will try again genset to see if with this fan working it still
gets as hot in the engine compartment.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Re: Yahoo Groups may become a thing of the past

Gary Wells

I can look into starting and hosting an English version of a full featured forum if there is enough support for the idea. I don't want to jump in 'out of nowhere' and hijack any else's ideas or plans. I host a few websites already and have plenty of room to put up a forum. Since the perception is that this will be a 'gradual' thing the group could construct the topics and features needed to make a full-up forum.

I'm not positive, since I've not tried it before, but a multi-language, single site forum could also work easily, it's just that it would require dual-posting in each of the different language sections (I don't think it can be automated).

I'd be happy to explore this further if there's a genuine interest in converting a long-standing group to a domain-based forum. It'd just take a bit of time and a nominal startup cost which I can handle. I wouldn't envision an 'association' fee or dues, just an option to donate to defray the domain registration and bandwidth costs.

So, I know I've been a lurker for a while and, as a matter of fact, we've not purchased our boat yet (we are committed to the brand though; it's just a matter of weeks till retirement!)but I could se this being a hobby while sailing around that might be enjoyable.

What thinkest thou??

Personally I would be in favor of setting up a forum such as the French one. Indeed, we could join forces.

Need a place where you can gather the messages in groups, and where we can exchange docs and images.

I would be conducive to a charge of "association" annual, if so needed for maintenance and the life of the forum. (easier than it can be replaced over time by banner ads).

All,

Yahoo Groups may slowly fade away. Yahoo started the deconstruction of Yahoo Groups when they recently chose to discontinue RSS feeds. RSS is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. I used RSS to notify me of new postings rather than email which can clog your inbox.

It is interesting to note that the last RSS feed that I received was on Wed Jul 24, 2013 2:05 pm which was titled HELP - AMEL DRIVE. When the RSS feeds stopped many people were asking questions via Yahoo's Group Owners Blog. The answer for about 2 weeks was, "we know, our engineers are working on it, we do not have an estimated date of repair." Then on August 6, Yahoo posts this: "As of August 6th, 2013, the RSS functionality of Yahoo! Groups has been discontinued." http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&id=SLN5811&locale=en_US&y=PROD_GRPS

Another sign is that although Yahoo promised 4 years ago that they would increase the size of allowed FILES from 100mb to 100gb, they have not. In fact, I find it is impossible to have an email conversation with anyone at Yahoo about Yahoo Groups.

With the rapid growth of FaceBook and others, Yahoo is probably looking at Groups as a thing of the past. Unfortunately FaceBook and others do not do the things that we have become accustomed to like file exchange.

I offer all of this without offering a solution. Also, I have no idea whether Yahoo Groups will be around in 6 months or 10 years...things change, and/or I could be wrong.

I am presenting this information about Yahoo Groups because with all of its problems, it has been good for us and I have been rewarded with great information by being a part of the Amel Owners Group. I am simply hoping that someone might have a solution.

Best,

Bill
