seals for Amel Drive on SM2K?

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Did I read that some owners replaced the 3 plastic seals with metallic ones? Or was this for something else?

Also, currently the seals on the Amel Drive are "single lips", has anyone tried the "double lip"?

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Where to purchase Fresh Water Pump Reya A66B and its rebuild kit ?

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Could you please let me know where I could purchase the rebuild a Fresh Water Pump Reya A66B and its rebuild kit ? (Unless I am mistaking, this is the fresh water pump that provides water to galley, heads, etc. from the water tank).
Also, how about the pressure plate, where could I purchase a spare?

Thanks in advance, Alexandre

Regarding your recommendation to buy Ideal clamps. The come in two grades of stainless; 410 and 300 both with 5/8” bands. Does it matter which grade?

Hi Duncan. They were $2.59 to $2.99 apiece for the smaller ones and ~$6.75 for the bigger (3-5") ones. I'm not sure how many we'll need but I bought 20 ea of three smaller sizes (5/8-2 1/2") and 10 ea of two larger sizes (3-5"). I'm hoping to get to the boat this wkend and will report on what I used.

Bad odours coming from the A/C

Sailorman <kimberlite@...>

Our forward head started to smell after about 3 years. That is the one used
by my crew.

To see if the smell was coming from the hose it was recommended that I take
a hot wet rag and hold it around the pipe for a few minutes. If it smells
after that, the hose needs to be changed.

I regularly used white vinegar in the heads.

When I changed the hose hundreds of small crystalline balls came out of the
pipe ( I assume urine).

As an experiment I put some of those in a glass container in pure white
vinegar –after a week no effect .

I came to the conclusion that the crew was not flushing the toilets enough
(especially at night when other crew are sleeping). I now insist that the
heads be flushed for the slow count of 10 and for the last 7 years I am
using the same hose without odor. Due to the length of travel, the fluids
stay in the hose unless the head is flushed in that manner.

I agree with Alan, any odor from the head, be it from a user or from a
permeated hose will be delivered directly to the aft cabin by the AC. I
found out that wrapping aluminum tape around the hoses totally removed the
permeated hose odor, a solution that has lasted for more than 4 years!. To
avoid the user's odor, we mount two battery operated fans on the hatch. I
uploaded a picture of it on the Photos section.

from the Air Conditionning.
I do not have it on the salon nor forward cabin.
I think Kent is right, that is comes from the condensation remaining in
the tray below the AC unit.
I will flush it a few times a day to see if it goes away.

Â

Hi everybody,

Whenever we leave our boat for a couple of days, the A/C
creates nasty odours. I assume, that this is because the
cooling water hoses are not gas tight.

The A/C smell in the owners cabin is the worst.

Does anybody have experience in resolving this issue?

Your support is highly appreciated.

CREW CALL FOR THE ANTARCTIC LEG, URUGUAY TO SOUTH AFRICA.

I am looking for two reasonably experienced yachties to help cruise
Antarctica during the brief southern summer. The plan is to leave Punta
del Este in early November, 2013, and arrive in Cape Town in mid- February,
2014. We will stop at the Falklands and the Antarctic Peninsula. The
exact route to South Africa depends on the ice conditions, with luck we will
be able to sail west along the coast using the prevailing easterly winds.
If ice extends too far north we will sail to the South Shetlands, South
Georgia and Tristan da Cunha. This will be Fiona's third Antarctic cruise.
I cover all of expenses of the cruise and in certain circumstances I may
assist with air fare for well qualified persons. I think this is the

I just spoke to a customer service rep at Ideal who says the 316 stainless is their most corrosion resistant product. Their 316 clamps have stainless band and screw...some have ferrous band and SS screw. She didn't know how long to expect them to last.

Possibly you have heard, but he recommends that I remove all hose clamps on
the Amel 54 as they have a mild steel screw that has rusted and the clamps
have come loose. Major damage has occurred. He suggest buying some boxes
of Ideal clamps in the ¾” to 2 1/2” sizes and replacing all them on the
boat.

Duncan,
Sorry for the bad grammar, there should have been a comma after ampage. What
i meant was by the time you would wire the 6 volt batteries to give you 24
volts, you would neither have the physical room to accommodate the number of
6 volt batteries required and still not have enough ampage stored in those
batteries to allow you to discharge them to fifty or sixty per cent daily
without constant recharging.
If you call Richard, he has forgotten more on this than i will ever know. I
mentioned Nigel Calders's book to you in Trinidad, get a copy, it will answer
many of your questions.

Hi All,
We also had the problem of smell from the bilge going to the heads through the bilge pipe. I fixed it by putting a down facing elbow where the bilge pipe enters he bilge sump, then a short length of tube, and two more elbows to create a mini p trap. problem over. When I am home in a day or two I will photograph the system and post it.

Hi Martin,
I can't vouch for your 54 but for sure in a Super Maramu the first place that I notice a bad smell that indicates the bilge needs cleaned is in the forward heads.
There is no "P" trap in the grey hard plastic pipe that takes the shower and basin water back to the bilge, therefore when you get a smelly bilge the odor tracks back up the pipe and into the heads, this happens forward and aft..
Turn on the aircon and the blower mixes it up and sends it throughout the saloon.
Using Javel tablets or any other substance with chlorine will kill the smell but unfortunately it will rather quickly eat through and destroy your copper grounding strap.

Hi all,
On the Amel and all previous boats the key to non smelling heads is as simple as long flushes. The flush must be long enough to remove the waste from the pipes and just leave water in them.

To avoid the user's odor, we mount two battery operated fans on the hatch. I uploaded a picture of it on the Photos section.

Bon Jour JeanLuc
Are you asking about the outhaul line on the main boom?  If so there are previous discussions that should be found by searching "outhaul line".  Amel uses a kevlar line, I believe.  It must be an extremely low stretch line that isn't too slick.  I don't remember what it was that I finally bought on the recommendation of this forum 5 years or so ago, but it was too slick.  On another forum recommendation, I sprayed it with contact glue which made it work until it had weathered enough to work without glue.

If that's not what you are asking about, I'm unclear.
