Thanks so much all you guys for all the very kind and helpful comment. Please keep it coming.

My beautiful 54 hull # 35 is called "Carango" -I just bought it on Friday - life's dream.

I hope I meet many of you around the World although we plan to trial it out in the Med fir the next 2 years. How much grilled calamari can I eat?

Thank you for the support.

Best wishes

Regarding the SSB installation, my aft missen stay with a insolator is my antenna. My understanding is that the longer the antenna the better. I have used it for sending and receiving email via Sailmail using their Rocky Hill, NC station which is over 1000 miles and it works fine. One note of importance is to run the antenna lead cable in PVC conduit and stand it off from the stay as it follows the stay to a point of attachment above the insolator. Otherwise radio interferrance will enter the stay and the other boat wiring.

This was all done at long range over the fibreglass antenna so I had no concerns about the one on my boat. I would have grave doubts about the competence of your adviser. When the installation is complete get an amateur radio operator to contact anyone at least 1000 miles away for a radio check to make sure you have a good installation and put your mind at rest.

Richard,

I finally bough my dream Amel 54 (hull no 35) from an Italian Rudi Peroni in Rhodes last week.

I too am installing Icom 801 SSB. I was told the 2.4m long whip antenna was only for receiving the DSC reply to a distress call and the main antenna for tx/rx should be a separate either triticale or back stay long antenna. Is that not correct.

The Icom 801 is just a marinised version of Icom 802.

Thanks for your help earlier too.

Hi Bob, I used several time in the past year this adress:
sav-at-amel.fr. Colette LIMOUZIN the secretary did the job very well at

The answer to Martins query is that using the port mizzen backstay works very well for my ham radio. Getting the insulators and having them fitted is expensive compared with getting a new base for your existing antenna. In the unlikely event that someone should be holding on to the backstay when someone transmits it would cause a nasty burn.

Good morning Eric,

On NIKIMAT (SM2K #289) I have a bow spirit and can see the attachment on
the anchor, therefore I can't figure out how the end of the pole is attached
to the boat...
Could you please email me some of the pictures of your boat?

Thanks in advance, sincerely, Alexandre

Dear Eric,

I Have a cruising chute I fly from one of the bow mooring cleats. A bow sprit would be much more satisfactory as we take part in all sorts of lower key races here in Hong Kong. Could I see the pics too or are they posted on this site?

Hi why not simply use an on demand pressure pump??? Easy to install no tank. Long life.

Thank you for your reply which solved the problem. Filling the pump housing through the vent plug was enough to get the system going.

My delay in replying was due to my wanting to post the identity of the replacement accumulator tank that AMEL supplied to me.

It is a SHURFLO tank and appears in the USA in the West Marine catalogue for 2013 on page 482 as Model 492739 with a price of $324.99.

It has a female fitting unlike our original which was a male fittign but standard adaptors bridged the difference. The top plate requires drilling for the Reya pump. I also had to replace the rubber mountings and the ones supplied by AMEL had a larger thread so the mounting plates required drilling and tapping to take the replacements.

The new tank works well except that the pressure has to drop right off before the pumop cuts in. Any advice on how to adjust the pressure cutout?

Martin,
I forgot to mention that if you have a Reja pump, you most likely will have to prime it. Take off the hose from the fresh water reservoir and fill it with water, there used to be a bleed bolt on the top of the pump that you need to loosen until the water is free flowing from the reservoir.
Good luck.

I have searched the postings and not been able to find an answer so sorry if this is a repeat request.

After leaving the boat in Norfolk, Virginia, USA for 6 months we are up to our ears in antifopuling, polishing etc prior to relaunch. I have in the midst of this fitted a replacement accumulator tank to the system. The original had rusted and was leaking air.

Note for fellow travellers, the replacement supplied by AMEL comes in Shurflo packaging. Made in Italy, shipped to the USA, back to France and then sent to us in the USA. If anyone is interested I will post the Shurflo model number, just do not have it to hand whilst writing this. Also note that the original (Amel 54 no 56) had a male fitting and the replacement has a female fitting so adapters are required.

I have now put the whole thing back together and am not sure how to bleed the air out of the system. We also have an empty hot water tank as the boat had been winterised before I carried this out so there is a lot of air in the syatem.

Grateful for any advice please.

Re: [Amel] SSB installation on Amel 54

Peter Forbes

Hi you need to mount the tuner in starboard stern so you can get to the ground foil. Best to use the whip Antenna. Next the back stay. Using the triact means running a very long wire = lost power and poor reception.

I would like to use the antenna between the mizzen and main mast. Would you
advice it?
Can someone tell me where I should place the tuner and where is the best
place to install the main unit?

Thanks in advance for your help
