Climma Air conditioning Capacitors for Super Maramu

Judy and Bill aboard SV BeBe <yahoogroups@...>

All,

Gary Silver posted the following some time ago:

Each Climma Air Conditioner of the vintage of my boat (SM Hull # 335) has five capacitors as follows:

1 each: 40 microFarads 420 volts to 470 volts (Biggest physical size)

1 each: 10 microFarads 420 volts to 470 volts (Medium size)

2 each: 2 microFarads 450 volts, 50 Hertz (small size)

1 each: 3.15 microFarads 450 volt, 50 Hertz (small size)

The capacitors that failed on my boat (and which I believe are the
run capacitors for the compressor motors) were the 10 microFarad
capacitors. The original ones were cylindrical and measured
3 inches long by 1 and 3/8 inches in diameter and were in a plastic
casing. They had 5/8 inch long spade connectors.

The replacement ones I found were ovoid, in a metal casing,
were larger physically and rated at 600 volts. None of those have
failed but were large enough that they would not fit inside the control box that contained all the other electronic components. I attached them to the outside of the box and insulated the connectors so nobody would take a large shock if they shorted across the terminals.

The only capacitors that have failed were the 10 mfd capacitors. I bought spares of each, but have only had to use the 10 microFarad capacitors.

There is also I saw a 40 microFarads and a 10 microFarads (I don't have any information if the last 2 fail often - may be Bill or someone has input on that).

The 3.15 and 2 microFarads were $12 each (the 40 and 10 which were $35 each)

Hi,
Could you please post or send the capacitor list for the Clima units. I too need to pick up spares before returning to the boat in July.

I have a list of replacement capacitors and relays if that's what is wrong. It is unlikely that it is the compressor. I had a refrigeration guy tell me I needed a new one, only to find the bad capacitor easily myself.

It's possible that it is a low refrigerant level, but I think you need special equipment to test and replace that. Check the capacitors and relays first. By then you'll have answers from those smarter than I.

Also, check the messages by searching for A/C or Climma. There are several threads about trouble shooting. I think it was Danny on Ocean Pearl who posted some pics in the photos section that are also helpful.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Dear Bill, Kent & Jason,

Thank you very much for your input:

The aft unit (compressor not kicking in) was because a wire got loose (after I looked at it on Sunday).  So now it is working again - Using a volt meter (on micro microfarad I also saw the 3 capacitators were not good) I have some coming. So was not that obvious.

The forward unit (no longer blowing cold air and freezing up) was due to poor ventilation and not running the fan on high speed (a neighbor/boat owner who work on Air Condionning said just like Bill) told me I should run the fan on high and adjust the thermostats.  He checked the capacitators they were showing the proper microfarad rating.

I also went to home depot and bought some filter (to cut to size - usually for window units) which I am going to install

So again, as always thanks for your precious input!  Feels nice to have full A/C again!

Hope you have a great day, sincerely, Alexandre

Alex,

The A/C will ice-up if the fan is blowing too slow. My experience is that you need to run them at high speed and adjust the thermostat next to the fan speed when it gets too cold.

Install your new fan capscitors, run on high speed fan and see if this clears up your issues.

Hi Martin,
There are two adjustment nuts underneath the grey plastic regulator cover.
No 1 is the range nut, No 2 is the differential which should set the flow
pressure. Then adjust the first one to set the "cut in" and "cut out". The
factory setting is around 20PSI .
There is a comprehensive explanation sheet on
Inspectapedia/water/WaterPumpAdjust.htm

My delay in replying was due to my wanting to post the identity of the
replacement accumulator tank that AMEL supplied to me.

It is a SHURFLO tank and appears in the USA in the West Marine catalogue
for 2013 on page 482 as Model 492739 with a price of $324.99.

It has a female fitting unlike our original which was a male fittign but
standard adaptors bridged the difference. The top plate requires drilling
for the Reya pump. I also had to replace the rubber mountings and the ones
supplied by AMEL had a larger thread so the mounting plates required
drilling and tapping to take the replacements.

The new tank works well except that the pressure has to drop right off
before the pumop cuts in. Any advice on how to adjust the pressure cutout?

Martin,
I forgot to mention that if you have a Reja pump, you most likely will
have to prime it. Take off the hose from the fresh water reservoir and fill
it with water, there used to be a bleed bolt on the top of the pump that you
need to loosen until the water is free flowing from the reservoir.
Good luck.

After leaving the boat in Norfolk, Virginia, USA for 6 months we are
up to our ears in antifopuling, polishing etc prior to relaunch. I have in
the midst of this fitted a replacement accumulator tank to the system. The
original had rusted and was leaking air.

Note for fellow travellers, the replacement supplied by AMEL comes in
Shurflo packaging. Made in Italy, shipped to the USA, back to France and
then sent to us in the USA. If anyone is interested I will post the Shurflo
model number, just do not have it to hand whilst writing this. Also note
that the original (Amel 54 no 56) had a male fitting and the replacement has
a female fitting so adapters are required.

I have now put the whole thing back together and am not sure how to
bleed the air out of the system. We also have an empty hot water tank as the
boat had been winterised before I carried this out so there is a lot of air
in the syatem.

Grateful for any advice please.

I think that all of you are wasting your time re the ssb antenna.I put a GAM antenna on over my backstay. There are two wires in it, absolutely watertight, no problems with salt water. You can hirea n electronics tech to adjust your tuner. To install, simply slide it up your backstay with small interval wire ties, and works better that the salt encrusted backstay and requires no interruption of the stay. I am using the starbord backstay. There is an "ideal" length for the antenna, seems like I remember 23 ft? That leaves plenty of room to put the lower insulator high enough to keep it out of reach. You just don't want to be touching it when transmitting.

Regarding the SSB installation, my aft missen stay with a insolator is my antenna. My understanding is that the longer the antenna the better. I have used it for sending and receiving email via Sailmail using their Rocky Hill, NC station which is over 1000 miles and it works fine. One note of importance is to run the antenna lead cable in PVC conduit and stand it off from the stay as it follows the stay to a point of attachment above the insolator. Otherwise radio interferrance will enter the stay and the other boat wiring.

I finally bough my dream Amel 54 (hull no 35) from an Italian Rudi Peroni in Rhodes last week.

I too am installing Icom 801 SSB. I was told the 2.4m long whip antenna was only for receiving the DSC reply to a distress call and the main antenna for tx/rx should be a separate either triticale or back stay long antenna. Is that not correct.

The Icom 801 is just a marinised version of Icom 802.

Thanks for your help earlier too.

Hello Peter, Many years ago I crewed on a yacht doing the ARC and it had an Icom with the fibre glass antenna. When we were half way across the Atlantic Andrew Bishop, who now runs the ARC, was stuck by the gybing boom and knocked unconscious. We got him down below and when the net came on his father called up for medical advice. This was to put him in his bunk and get him checked when we got to Barbados.
A short while later we heard Cornell talking with his office in the UK trying to get media coverage for the ARC’s life saving advice! The skipper, Andrews father, then had to call his wife in the UK over the short wave link to tell her that there was nothing to worry about in case she read something in the press about her son’s alleged perilous medical condition. This was all done at long range over the fibreglass antenna so I had no concerns about the one on my boat. I would have grave doubts about the competence of your adviser. When the installation is complete get an amateur radio operator to contact anyone at least 1000 miles away for a radio check to make sure you have a good installation and put your mind at rest.
Good luck, Anne and John, Bali Hai, SM2K 319 Malta

Richard,

I finally bough my dream Amel 54 (hull no 35) from an Italian Rudi Peroni in Rhodes last week.

I too am installing Icom 801 SSB. I was told the 2.4m long whip antenna was only for receiving the DSC reply to a distress call and the main antenna for tx/rx should be a separate either triticale or back stay long antenna. Is that not correct.

The Icom 801 is just a marinised version of Icom 802.

Thanks for your help earlier too.

Hi you need to mount the tuner in starboard stern so you can get to the ground foil. Best to use the whip Antenna. Next the back stay. Using the triact means running a very long wire = lost power and poor reception.

Alex,

The A/C will ice-up if the fan is blowing too slow. My experience is that you need to run them at high speed and adjust the thermostat next to the fan speed when it gets too cold.

Install your new fan capscitors, run on high speed fan and see if this clears up your issues.

Why does the compressor not kick in anymore? Is this because there is no more R134a refrigerant?

Also, why do I have ice on the coil of that unit (and only that one)?

Thankfully, the salon unit is ok with all 3 speeds.

First make sure that all filters are clean and that airflow over coils is unrestricted. Open the control boxes and look at the capacitors and relay switches. If they are bad it should be obvious.

Hi before you get to far try removing the plow plug and clean it. Its most likely carboned up.
There are some time delays regarding start up AND shut down that you have to wait on.
Fuel pumps can be have at many marine outlets yours need to be a small low pressure low volume pump. It think we paid about $220 US for one a few years back.

Hi Greg,
The Eberspacher/Espar units are great but have some complexity to them. The following link has some very good troubleshooting procedures which have been used with success by other Amel owners http://letonkinoisvarnish.co.uk/Eberspacher_Faults_2.html
