Re: [Amel] Battery bank problems SM with 13 batteries

Roque

Hi

1. Even the so called sealed maintenance free batteries need to be checked
from time to time, if they have a way to top the water (as most do). They
are in fact ¨low maintenance¨ ;

2. If you have a voltage regulator, it doesn´t matter if the charger is
small. In fact, the trouble is when you have a charger that is too big for
the bank (about 20 to 25% of the total amperage would be ideal). I guess
you have at least a 600A battery bank, so both the 100 charger and the 175A
nominal alternator would be fine

3. If you do have a voltage regulator, maybe it was set to charge a
different kind of battery. The alternator could also be a suspect, if the
voltage it delivers is out of range, (but it sounds like you don´t use it a
lot).

On our trip home from St Martin last week, we discovered that most of the
liquid in all the sealed maintenance free batteries had boiled off. I did
not realize that under the labels there are plugs where water can be added.
In any event all the house (12) batteries
have to be replaced.
We have a 175 amp alternator and 30 and 100 amp Dolphin chargers.
I spoke with Dolphin and they said that the 30 amp charger is too small
for the bank and it probably cooked the batteries as it saw the bank as
always needing a charge. I plan on having the alternator checked and then
speak again with Dolphin when I install the new batteries.

Kimberlite usually is in a marina somewhere and plugged in with the 30 amp
charger running.
Any thoughts on my problem?

Thankyou Viet, we upgraded from the CQR to the lewmar delta and that was better but it sounds like the rocna is very good. We found the CQR quite unreliable.

Hi all.
We are thinking of upgrading from our Lewmar Delta anchor and wonder if anyone would like to share their views on alternatives. We have tried tyo fit a Manson Supreme which is very similar to the Rocna but the shank is too deep to fit into the bow roller. I think the Rocna may fit but I have heard some bad things about poor quality steel used in some manufactured in China.???
Would appreciate any comments about anchor types and sizes. Not going to go stainless so don't need info on that.
Looking forward to your comments.

We also agree with previous writer, we have a 40 kg Roccna and if it fails the anchor bottom is really bad. The best is that if it fails, it digg it self in again.
We are so pleased that we have bought a 20 kg to use for tandem anchoring together with the 40 kg.
The stock is a tiny bit to wide close to the blade for the opening so you must be careful when you take it up, and not let the windlass drag it all the way, leave inch or so. But it is not a big problem.

You can find pictures of our Roccna in the album Lady Annila.

Possible sale of Nirvana genoa furler and genoa

Dave_Benjamin

We are going to pull the mainmast on Exit Strategy this summer. We may replace the genoa furler, which is a 1986'ish Nirvana. While it''s in good working order with a rebuilt motor, we are thinking about replacing it with a manual furler since the entire rig will be rebuilt.

The work will take place in California. Since the foil is one piece I think it would have to be trucked but perhaps someone would be interested in the rest of the components.

We'd also sell our genoa which has about year of use on it. It's a traditional Maramu genoa. We're making revisions to the sailplan and testing some new ideas for my company, thus the genoa will become surplus.

Demonstration of furler and genoa prior to rig removal could certainly be arranged.

Regards,

Dave Benjamin

Starter motor for the TMD22p volvo motor

Heat exchange for the onan 7kw genset

Tom,

It makes sense that you would have a Hurth HBW250 like Stargazer. Typical Amel to put a larger one than the minimum, I have a HBW250 but on a 60 hp Perkins on my Maramu. If you need spares it is now ZF25M. There is also a ZF25 which is a differnt (hydraulically actuated) gearbox.

Hi Tom,
Once you are certain the linkage is not the problem, you need to find out the model number.
Having found out the model, it should be on a plate on the gearbox, if painted over a careful clean should do the trick, you ask for a "rebuild kit" from ZF, or their local agents.
Any competent workshop should be able to do the rebuild, the kit includes bearings, seals, drive discs etc.
I have just had our HBW 250 rebuilt - it is now the ZF 25.

Good Luck

If you engage reverse by moving the lever on the transmission itself, do you still have the problem? Just thinking that it would be good to try that to eliminate the cable/linkage as part of the problem.

Any thoughts or info would be appreciated.

Another website you might find helpful is:
