Hi Lorenzo

My Amel Maramu is it Turkey (not SM). I asked there for an offer for
battaries and they sent me a qoute for Delphi.
Here is the link:

Hi Lorenzo,
If it is of any help to you the Delphi batteries were manufactured under
license in the EU by Varta and marketed by Numax and Vetus under their own
brands. They are no longer made by Varta.

Here in the UK Numax stock a similar battey: XV31MF Terminal 1 DT which
I think has both taper and screw terminals but you would need to check if
they are suitable as the terminal layout on out Delphi batteries on our
Sharki are Type 2. I think I will be able to re-drill the copper connecting
bar to fit and use these batteries when our existing ones fail.

If they are suitable perhaps there is an Italian distributor.

Having had to search for large group 31 batteries in Europe I know how hard
it is to find them. The best is to visit a store like perhaps a Giant or
large automotive truck supply house. These are big batteries with a weight
of 30 kg each. DO NOT GET SMALLER BATTERIES. best may be to have a store
order a full set so they are fresh and the same age.

Outhaul gearbox and battery replacement

John Hollamby <annejohnholl@...>

The outhaul gearboxes are industrial qulity and designed to run continuously. In use for outhauling they only run for perhaps five minutes a day.The only part likely to wear is the bronze drive gear wheel and this is available from Amel for 200 euros plus carriage. When mine were stripped down after ten years use the wheel on the in-mast furling was perfect but the outhaul one was pretty badly worn apparently because it had been fitted the wrong way round originally thus putting the wear off centre.
Varta batteries are made in Germany and of high quality, many other brands come from the Far East and may not be so good. I believe that Winner is made in Taiwan. Fittings are readily available to convert battery posts to bolt on type.

Yesterday I bought 13 of the Varta 105 amp/hr (A25) batteries. I was told that Varta (very good brand in EU) purchased the French Delphi plant about 2006 and another company bought the Delphi brand name...not sure if this is correct, but it is what I was told.

The Varta 105 amp/hr (A25) has exactly the same case and dimensions as the Delphi Freedom battery installed by Amel on our 2003 Super Maramu. Everything fits perfectly including the copper connection straps.

It seems like quite a few people are tackling the problems servicing
their
outhaul gearboxes. I happened to notice the other day that the top
lip
seal
was shot on mine and started on a two day project to disassemble the
gearbox.

I tried just about everything to get the inner shaft removed, except
"getting medieval with a sledge hammer" as one of the other owners
demonstrated. After bending several 8mm steel brackets and breaking
my
puller tool, we finally succeeded with a 20mm thick steal bracket
that
was
fabricated for the purpose. The nice thing about the approach that
finally
succeeded for us was that all the force was placed on the outer
shaft of
the
gearbox, none on the boom or the other components of the gearbox.
I'll
post
a picture when I have a chance.

I found the model information posted by one of the other owners
here:

Manufacturer: LS Leroy Somer
Made in France
6015 Angoulene
Reducteur N 0256889
Type MVA M33C
Rduction 1/60

I have not been able to reach Leroy Somer via their contact page.
Can
anyone
recommend a reliable and inexpensive source to order the gearbox or
parts
from? Any pricing info?

One other question: it seems that the outhaul gearbox causes more
problems
than the main sail furling gearbox. Is that right? Is the latter
just
less
exposed to the elements?

thanks, Mark

Thanks Mike. I guess the Amel drive must be pretty bullet proof. I now have a ss wearing ring but will keep it0for a spare and go with the majority opinion and use bronze. Just hoping the new seals will last longer than a few months this time. It was odd finding no springs in the seals as I know they were there at installation. Can only guess they were NOT ss and rusted completely away when water intruded.

Re: Amel Drive Seals leaking

Just my 2 cents on the "C" drive and seals.
My oil reservoir is labeled "15w40" and I've read the same in manuals. The 15 rating means that it is thinner at lower temperatures (when you first start up) but retains 40 weight protection at higher temps.

In earlier postings there is mention that Amel went to 1 seal facing inward (toward the oil) and 2 outward toward the sea water. This is because there is more often a problem with sea water leaking into the system then oil leaking out--although both are possible in severely worn or damaged systems.

A key to keeping the stainless lip seal springs from corroding is to pack them in grease. I have had very good luck with the grease that is marketed for packing the wheel bearings of boat trailers. It is designed to keep sea water from permeating and causing corrosion. It is also designed to withstand high rpm and temps and to avoid being washed away by sea water. It is inexpensive--usually blue and green in color and is marketed as "marine boat trailer grease" .

Richard, what is your solution to the chronic "weak link" in the seals for the Amel drive?  I am finding water and oil leaking after just 6 months since the last change.  What's your take on putting the seals in the opposite of how the Amel drawing depicts, with the two inner seals keeping water out, and the outer seal keeping oil in?  Someone on this website said that when the Amel service center in Martinique changed theirs, that's how they did it.

I have a transmission fluid reservoir but no oil reservoir for the drive shaft, so I can't easily tell if it's losing oil or being contaminated with water.  I think others have a reservoir for the oil as well.  Can anyone tell me (or better yet, send pics) how this is connected?

Hi Guys the proper oil for the "c" drive is 40 wt MOTOR OIL not ATF.

The prop shaft turns inside the bronze bushings. Should you get a line on
the shaft or bearing wear and the shaft and SS bushing come in contact you
will most likely gaul both and damage the "c" drive. That is y Amel used
bronze a bearing material just in case the ball bearing fail.

Hi Kent:

I just posted the pic in a folder entitled Amel SM Transmission / C-drive/

It wasn't me that made a SS prop shaft wearing-out ring. I have always
used the bronze ring supplied by Amel. However, I didn't understand Richards
comment on the stainless ring being dangerous. It is true that generally you
don't want two metals of the same type as wearing against each other, but
the wearing out ring doesn't "wear" against the prop shaft. The ring is just
basically a sleeve that seals to the prop shaft with an internal o-ring. It
provides a sleeve against which the lip seals "wear". There should be no
rotation of the wearing-out sleeve/ring relative to the prop shaft.

Let me know if from the picture your reservoir is incorrectly filled with
ATF. I am not sure of the miscibility of ATF and engine oil. If the
reservoir has been incorrectly filled with ATF, when you change the prop
shaft seals/wearing out-ring, once the seals are removed you should be able
to use a small tube to insert along side the prop shaft to suck any residual
oil/ATF out and then after installing new seals refill with the correct oil.
I actually used an old pediatric fiberoptic bronchoscope inserted along side
the shaft in this manner to inspect the gears in my C-drive. I am not even
sure that the term C-drive is the correct term, but it serves the purpose as
long as we are all on the same page of what it represents.

Thanks Chris for that information. Very valuable. The first time I tried to
remove my prop I stretched out two sets of screws and the thing would not
budge (1 year old boat and the autoprop was recalled by the factory). No
amount of hammering on the puller bolt worked but gently tapping "around"
the hub of the prop where it fit on the shaft resulted in an immediate
"snap" as the prop released. The key is to put tension on the prop with the
puller then tap circumferentially around the prop hub (radially if you
will).

Hi Kent (et al),
I've been reading the posts about the prop seals and the "C" drive
with interest. Just to add a little to the correspondence, on our Santorin,
the seals failed shortly after we set out from the Caribbean for the Med.
(in 1998)

By the time we reached Gibraltar and hauled out, the oil in the
reservoir was almost pure white. On stripping down and checking there was no
sign of any excess wear or play in the gears. They were "squeaky clean". A
local engineer commented that what had been in there was an oil & water
emulsion, and in the days before deterging engine oils that was what was
used to wash out engines & gearboxes - known as flushing oil. Fresh water
would have been better. but no harm had been done.
We washed the drive out with water, (fresh), from the bottom, using
the drain hole, and the shaft space, then flushed with oil before replacing
the ring and 3 seals, filled with oil, rotated, drained, refilled, until
there was no sign of any water contamination.Â
I spoke with Amel, at that time the SAV was run by J-Y Selo, and he
confirmed our actions, and advised that the likely cause was monofilament
line in the water, winding round the prop and melting with the friction,
thus ruining the seal. He also said that there was little likelyhood of any
harm being done. He said that he would not advise me to leave the boat
unused for any length of time with the "white stuff" in the reservoir and
gearbox.

Since 1998, I have replaced the seals 3 times, each time as a result
of contamination, only once at anything other than a planned haulout. (We
were going on a cruise into an area where there were no haulout facilities)
I, also, have never even considered using anything other than a
bronze wearing ring on the prop shaft, in fact I have two spares, with
seals, (and yes the seals do have s/s springs), one purchased from Amel on a
visit to France, the other locally made, I find it hard to tell the
difference. It's relatively easy to change the ring, a HUGE job to do
anything to the shaft.
In passing, I was told by another Amel owner that to remove the fixed
pitch prop the best way was to heat it gently whilst applying gentle
pressure with a puller, there will be a "pop" and the prop will be free. I
once managed it without a puller-but remember to wear gloves!
  Hope this helps everyone.

Thanks, Gary. I should be able to figure it out, especially with your

have yet. I'd be willing to bet that when the new engine was installed,

The prop shaft turns inside the bronze bushings. Should you get a line on the shaft or bearing wear and the shaft and SS bushing come in contact you will most likely gaul both and damage the "c" drive. That is y Amel used bronze a bearing material just in case the ball bearing fail.

Hi Kent:

I just posted the pic in a folder entitled Amel SM Transmission / C-drive/ prop shaft.

It wasn't me that made a SS prop shaft wearing-out ring. I have always used the bronze ring supplied by Amel. However, I didn't understand Richards comment on the stainless ring being dangerous. It is true that generally you don't want two metals of the same type as wearing against each other, but the wearing out ring doesn't "wear" against the prop shaft. The ring is just basically a sleeve that seals to the prop shaft with an internal o-ring. It provides a sleeve against which the lip seals "wear". There should be no rotation of the wearing-out sleeve/ring relative to the prop shaft.

Let me know if from the picture your reservoir is incorrectly filled with ATF. I am not sure of the miscibility of ATF and engine oil. If the reservoir has been incorrectly filled with ATF, when you change the prop shaft seals/wearing out-ring, once the seals are removed you should be able to use a small tube to insert along side the prop shaft to suck any residual oil/ATF out and then after installing new seals refill with the correct oil. I actually used an old pediatric fiberoptic bronchoscope inserted along side the shaft in this manner to inspect the gears in my C-drive. I am not even sure that the term C-drive is the correct term, but it serves the purpose as long as we are all on the same page of what it represents.

Thanks, Gary,
That's interesting...there is a single reservoir on Kristy (SM243) in the location you describe, but it's full of transmission fluid. I have never traced it's hose to the transmission to confirm, but since there's no transmission fluid in the drive oil, I assume it's going to the transmission. There is no reservoir for the drive oil. I look forward to seeing your pics an will probably install a reservoir for my drive oil as well.
Â
I'll install my seals as you suggest and see what happens. Wasn't it you who put the SS retaining ring in place of the brass one? I've had one machined, but now I'm not sure I should use it after Richard's posts.

Hi Kent:

There is a lot to learn isn't there. I don't pretend to know it all and some of my lessons have been hard earned as well. I don't feel like you are dragging us along at all. Your issues always raise valuable insights and provocative questions. Thanks to you for asking the questions that elicit good information from many.

[Amel] Re: Amel Drive Seals leaking

Thanks Chris for that information. Very valuable. The first time I tried to remove my prop I stretched out two sets of screws and the thing would not budge (1 year old boat and the autoprop was recalled by the factory). No amount of hammering on the puller bolt worked but gently tapping "around" the hub of the prop where it fit on the shaft resulted in an immediate "snap" as the prop released. The key is to put tension on the prop with the puller then tap circumferentially around the prop hub (radially if you will).

All the best,

Hi Kent (et al),
I've been reading the posts about the prop seals and the "C" drive with interest. Just to add a little to the correspondence, on our Santorin, the seals failed shortly after we set out from the Caribbean for the Med. (in 1998)

By the time we reached Gibraltar and hauled out, the oil in the reservoir was almost pure white. On stripping down and checking there was no sign of any excess wear or play in the gears. They were "squeaky clean". A local engineer commented that what had been in there was an oil & water emulsion, and in the days before deterging engine oils that was what was used to wash out engines & gearboxes - known as flushing oil. Fresh water would have been better. but no harm had been done.
We washed the drive out with water, (fresh), from the bottom, using the drain hole, and the shaft space, then flushed with oil before replacing the ring and 3 seals, filled with oil, rotated, drained, refilled, until there was no sign of any water contamination.
I spoke with Amel, at that time the SAV was run by J-Y Selo, and he confirmed our actions, and advised that the likely cause was monofilament line in the water, winding round the prop and melting with the friction, thus ruining the seal. He also said that there was little likelyhood of any harm being done. He said that he would not advise me to leave the boat unused for any length of time with the "white stuff" in the reservoir and gearbox.

Since 1998, I have replaced the seals 3 times, each time as a result of contamination, only once at anything other than a planned haulout. (We were going on a cruise into an area where there were no haulout facilities)
I, also, have never even considered using anything other than a bronze wearing ring on the prop shaft, in fact I have two spares, with seals, (and yes the seals do have s/s springs), one purchased from Amel on a visit to France, the other locally made, I find it hard to tell the difference. It's relatively easy to change the ring, a HUGE job to do anything to the shaft.
In passing, I was told by another Amel owner that to remove the fixed pitch prop the best way was to heat it gently whilst applying gentle pressure with a puller, there will be a "pop" and the prop will be free. I once managed it without a puller-but remember to wear gloves!
   Hope this helps everyone.

Mark,

The gearbox is available. Pricing is $521 ea. FCA Charleston, SC and delivery time is about 8 weeks.

The product would be available from the factory in France in 4 weeks if you wanted to air freight the item. It normally costs about $3.50 per kg.

If you want to proceed with an order, I can put you in touch with one of our distributors.

Eric and all,

The Leroy Somer gear reduction gearbox is part number 102014. It can be
ordered from Leroy Somer at the US phone 731-967-3000. I got this
information from gears-usa"at"leroy-somer.com. They told me via email that
it was available.

I have not called the number for a price because I am in Greece now. Let

It seems like quite a few people are tackling the problems servicing
their
outhaul gearboxes. I happened to notice the other day that the top lip
seal
was shot on mine and started on a two day project to disassemble the
gearbox.

I tried just about everything to get the inner shaft removed, except
"getting medieval with a sledge hammer" as one of the other owners
demonstrated. After bending several 8mm steel brackets and breaking my
puller tool, we finally succeeded with a 20mm thick steal bracket that
was
fabricated for the purpose. The nice thing about the approach that
finally
succeeded for us was that all the force was placed on the outer shaft of
the
gearbox, none on the boom or the other components of the gearbox. I'll
post
a picture when I have a chance.

I found the model information posted by one of the other owners here:

Manufacturer: LS Leroy Somer
Made in France
6015 Angoulene
Reducteur N 0256889
Type MVA M33C
Rduction 1/60

I have not been able to reach Leroy Somer via their contact page. Can
anyone
recommend a reliable and inexpensive source to order the gearbox or
parts
from? Any pricing info?

One other question: it seems that the outhaul gearbox causes more
problems
than the main sail furling gearbox. Is that right? Is the latter just
less
exposed to the elements?

thanks, Mark
