I do not know if you noticed, but there is a close-up photo of the A/B switch at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amelyachtowners/photos/album/999927423/pic/list The switch that was installed by Amel on BeBe is rated at 20Amps, 660VAC. I believe this type of switch is call a "rotary selector switch." This switch has 4 inputs and 2 sets of 4 outputs. The switch selects: O - which is nothing or OFF, 1 - which is one of the drives and 2 - which is the other drive. The four inputs are 2 for the drive motor and 2 for the clutch. Eric, Thanks for the confirmation. I guess I need to determine if this
switch allows for four inputs and eight outputs. I appreciate the info, Thanks again, Pat |

If I recall correctly.
The output from the autopilot computer is 4 wires 2 motor and 2 clutch. These 4 would connect to one or the other autopilot drives. Yes, That would be 12 wires. Dave, Just after I sent the post asking about the lenght of the arm I found
the manual on the raymarine site with the info, but thanks anyway and thanks for the lead on the a/b switch. If you have installed a drive in a SM I would like to see what modifications were done. There does not seem to be enough room to install a type II long drive per raymarine guidelines. Thanks,Pat |

Kent we have seen posting regarding replacing the bronze bushings with SS however one must understand that with both the shaft and bushings of basically the same material u are asking for trouble. The generally accepted engineering solution is one surface or the other is sacrificial. Should for any reason the spinning shaft come in contact with the SS you stand a very good chance of doing VERY SERIOUS damage to the entire Amel "C" drive system. This serious business. For the small price of bronze your way ahead.
I know others have used SS with success to date. The risk is very high. linear drive
Patrick McAneny
I just bought a linear drive to install and looked at photos of Bebe's installation. Upon looking yesterday my aft section has a stringer similar to the one where the cables run through 5 inches to starboard of the rudder post, where Bebe's is open, no stringer. I will have to cut away some of the stringer in order to install the drive unit. The quadrant on Bebe also appears to extend aft further from the rudder post. I assume most of the Amels had the linear drive installed by Amel. My question my boat is a 1994 SM #123 has anyone of similar vintage installed a drive unit and have photos of the install and could someone tell me the lenght from the center of rudder post to attachment point of drive arm. Also if they were able to purchase a a/b switch I would appreciate to know where. Thanks, Pat

Re: [Amel] Re: Winch Parts for earlier Super Maramus
Too bad, Barb. Seems like anything we ignore eventually goes bad, eh? I got the stuff from WinchSpares, thanks. Guess I'll just order a rebuild kit and a few extra springs, pawls, and crescents, then see what else I might need when I get into them.
Thanks again, and happy sailing. Kent SM243 KRISTY |

The starboard winch failed due to the main seal breaking - the port one was cracked right thru. Starboard winch was completely rusted and corroded. It seemed no maintenance had been done and the whole thing was very dry. As the corrosion had taken over - there was no other way but to replace as Wnchspares did not have everything needed - but were very helpful said they could send drawings and we could have the parts made up - but TOO HARD. Just look and see whether how it looks - I attach parts stuff for you if required from winchspares. --- On Sun, 19/6/11, karkauai@... <karkauai@...> wrote:

A sea anchor Eric... we encountered weather that we had anticipated would be passing North of us and the grib file we had down loaded did not indicate such wind intensity but a passing ship was able to give us a weather forecast that made our decision for us. We had only just bought the para anchor so we were novices really at deploying it but I have to say it did a great job. We had not had time to sort out our 40m floating lines for the pick up bouys so had to use mooring lines but we managed. We will get everything to hand now before we set off for Lagos

For the record, I'm having a SS "wearing ring" machined in Chaguaramas for the prop drive for the Yanmar right now, as there was watery oil leaking from the drive when I pulled KRISTY out. It had only been 8 months since the seals had been replaced using seals I bought from Amel. The mechanic in Chag said that there were no springs in the lip seals! I know they were there when the seals were changed...I guess they had to be non stainless springs and had completely deteriorated in 8 months??? Thanks for your help and indulgence in my many questions and requests. Kent SM 243 KRISTY |

Servicing winches and wearing ring
John Hollamby <annejohnholl@...>
I think that all that is needed to service the winches is a couple of plastic bowls, some kerosene and a small paint brush cleaning the old grease off in one bowl and then putting parts in the other bowl to dry off prior to regeasing etc.
I did not recognise many of the parts in the series added by JLuc (some notes would have helped) but I saw that he had used a Speedbit Sleeve on one of them. These very thin stainless sleeves would be ideal for putting on a wearing ring but I was unable to get one the right size here in Malta. I believe that one should make a wearing ring last much longer. Launching soon, Ane and John, Bali Hai, SM319 |

Re: [Amel] sea anchor
Wow! Had to be pretty scary. How would you feel about describing how you got caught in it, what the seas were like, how you deployed the chute and adjusted it, and how you retrieved it? I'd also like to know what you'd do different if you could do it over again. I have a Paratech chute but no experience using it. Glad you made it through that ordeal.
