With no electrics, can you manually roller furl the main from the cockpit (as you can for the jib) or do you have to do it at the mast? Thanks for clueing me in. Greg Shea

Re: Rép. : [Amel] Prop shaft alternator (psa)
Serge Tremblay <laetitiaii@...>
Pat,
Confirmation! The meter on the PSA control panel monitors the amps flowing into the circuit-- ie the House or Service battery bank. If it is not working (movement of the needle towards the right), as you indicated... unless there is a meter failure, your PSA is not generating current into the batteries... Yes, it does not make sense to use the PSA when the main engine is running! (Unless!!!! the alternator on the engine has failed...) Looking forward for specs of your recent PSA. I took that from your previous reply, then it seemed there was a contrary post, and the keys being connected made me think. I will post the make and model of the psa .The meter above the switch is to measure amperage from the psa, is that correct ?I assumed its purpose was to monitor the battery bank and was not working. Serge, My boat is on a mooring just off from my house, so I ran out to get
you the psa info. Manufacturer is Valeo made in France. The numbers were hard to read but I think they read-2988940 also 90838940 , 28 v , 25 amp. My meter is digital. This weekend while sailing I will see if it works while the psa is engaged. Thanks, Pat

Rép. : [Amel] Prop shaft alternator (psa) (long...)
Serge Tremblay <laetitiaii@...>
Pat,
Glad to read you discovered the unquestionable advantage of the PSA. With deference, i refer you to my earlier postings this month on te issue of connection, but maybe my explanations were not clear, so i will restate some. You may purchase the ' 12v Doctor's alternator' book or ' Sailboat Electrical simplified' from any major shipshandlery, including Defender Industries, to find out more about alternators. On Amels, the red light goes out, as the alternator red warning light on a car, when the exciting current to the alternator starts being generated by the small trio of diodes in or on the alternator. On my boat, the green light in the PSA control panel indicates power connection on the wire between the house battery bank and the output of the alternator. It is activated by the keyed switch making the connection and it is on as long as the batteries are not fully discharged or the PSA is producing DC voltage and , either way, the switch is on. The meter indicates the number of amperes being generated by the PSA, not the voltage. As you may know, indicator lights are usually shining on, as showing a voltage difference and not (save few exceptions) a current going thru a circuit in a particular direction. If your green light goes on only when the PSA is generating voltage superior to that of the batteries to which it is connected, it would require a setup (ie a component like a zener diode or ordinary diode) which isolates this light from the batteries. This is certainly not the setup on my Mango and would mean that, in such setup, the green light and the amp meter have the same purpose! When sailing in a regular ( no gusts) wind, with all sails up, when the wind does bring the boat to 5 or 6 knots, my experience is that the PSA, when engaged, does lightly reduce the hull speed. It seems to be about 1/2knots, try it under conditions where all the energy of the wind is used to propel the boat to a speed less than your mathematical hull speed ( approximately 1.34 multiplied by the square root of the waterline lenght) and tell all of us about your results. My experience is that neither the PSA nor the other alternators on my boat are damaged by running the motor when the PSA is energized. In my view, the separate switch with the same key is simply a idiot proof solution to a nonsensical action by the boat operator. BTW If you do some propeller drag testing, you may also wish to compare the difference in the drag between a free turning 3 blades propeller and stopping the propeller from turning. To my knowledge no one has given results for Amels... but racers and long term offshore sailors recognize a difference. On the other hand, the main engine alternator(s) on Amels are not protected from someone (usually refered to as the Brother-in-law) closing off the motor switch before stopping the motor, which often (but not always) results in overloading the alternator(s) thus burning the large rectifier diodes and/or the stator wiring. A zap stop diode is available from major US shipstores to protect against this event. Finally, can you give particulars (Maker, Model, country of origin* etc. ) as to which PSA was recently installed on your boat and, if and when available, the amp. level production on partially discharged batteries at various speeds, ie: 5, 6, 7, 8 kt. As far as i know there is not much? if any documentation on this issue and the Amel is the only production boat that was offered with a standard PSA. Serge, V Opéra, Mango #51 *For instance the same model of Alternator made under the Delco-Remy brand (more than a thousand models...) in the USA or Singapour or elsewhere in Asia may be different. . Pat, My Amel is set up the exact same way, both the engine and PSA key are on a welded ring so it's either one or the other. My PSA key switch (panel) is directly starboard in the companionway and can be easily reached from the helm with just a short stretch. -Bob

Well i for one think this topic is very interesting.
When you say the two keys are secured together do you mean they are on the same key ring so to operate one you have to remove the other or what? What sort of PSA do you have is it 'just' a standard automotive alternator with a very small pulley? thanks regards David On 15 September 2010 14:29, <sailw32@...> wrote:

Re: [Amel] Thomson Australe Washing machine
bobparry1947
Hello everybody,
I have been reading these emails about the Thomson washing machine. Our machine is 20 years old and oil leaks out when it spins. It is also very unhappy doing heavier loads such as towels that it used to cope with. Our problem is that it is an Electrolux front loader and we have not seen anything small enough to replace it. Replacing it with a top loader would involve cutting the top out of the bench and possibly other modifications to the space. Any ideas?
