Jim- My wife and I purchased SM2K hull number 422 this Spring from Joel Potter. He's Amel's sole sanctioned representative in the America's, so we felt like the fact that he's tied to Chantiers Amel was a good sign. We found him to be completely forthright and detail-oriented throughout the process. What's better is that he's got 30 years experience with these boats and knows every mechanical and electrical nuance imaginable. We knew exactly what we were buying and 6 months later I can honestly say that he'll sell me my next boat, although parting with LORIENT now would involve prying it from my dead hand........we love our boat.

Your problem sounds to me like you have a failing clutch in the drive unit. When these Raymarine clutches begin to fail they will let go after working file for hours. As the failing clutch slips, the autopilot and clutch work harder, increasing the heat of the clutch and the drive unit...and it fails and off course you go. The 7000 head unit should give an alarm at this point.

The clutch can be replaced (not rebuilt). Raymarine or a Raymarine dealer can do this for you, or you can order the clutch and give it a go.

Remember the clutch is always 12 volts. Most Raymarine computers have either a switch that selects 12 or 24 volts for the clutch, or the later models have a clutch fuse that is inserted into either the 12v or the 24v slot. Unfortunately, if you select 24 volts for the clutch at the computer, the fuse will not blow, and the clutch will work for up to 200 hours at 24 volts before becoming toast.

WOW 654 BHP what sort of fuel consumption will you get and i guess hull
speed just went out the window fitting it could be a problem though :-(

We had a similar problem with a different brand (Australian made) autopilot. At first I attributed the problem solely to the autopilot or perhaps the gyrocompass. We eventually discovered that the cause was micro interruptions to our main house power supply due to loose/faulty connections at that master switch. We weren't able to identify the cause until the problem became so bad that it started affecting other DC items - such as lighting etc. In fact all the other electronic navigation devices were still were able to function despite these short interruptions in power (including the laptop chart system - because of the inbuilt battery backup). The autopilot however would just get "lost" off track and the boat would go off course.

Do you have a remote control? If so, disconnect it completely from the unit
itself. Worked for me, a few years ago, although it was a BG autopilot.



If not, you could take off the rear cover of the head and clean the
mainboard with isopropilic alcohol (99.9%, not ordinary alcohol). Sometimes
tiny grains of salt get inside and, since they attract moisture, in the
right condition will bridge a contact. Also happened to me with an Autohelm
4000.

Maurice, I also just installed a new x30 autopilot.My ST7000 sent a low
battery message.I am sure the control head is good and the computer could be
bad or just suffered from a voltage drop do to an unknow problem.If you or
anyone would want these as spares you are welcome to them.However shipping to
N.Z. from U.S. could be pricey.

foreign flagged and owned by a foreign corporation and could not stay in
Brazil year round. I am sure that things have probably changed so ask your
personal attorney to recommend a tax specialist who is fully familiar with
current practices.

The Amel Owners Group Moderator asked me to again try to post my original reply to your Topic...the following is the message that I had to send to you privately because of some issues with the Amel Owners Group. I apologize for the duplicity of these postings, but it is of no fault of mine.......

Your best bet is to contact Joel Potter, Amel's rep for the Americas..

1. He sold all of the Amels in the Americas at least the first time when they were new as he is the sole rep for the Americas.

2. He will not sell a used Amel that has been abused. I personally know of a boat that he refused to sell.

3. He knows of Amels that are not yet "officially" listed for sale because many of us who may be considering a future sale of our boat trust Joel to have a "what if" conversation with him. You should trust him for your search.

Judy and I have sailed BeBe, #387, from the Caribbean across the Pacific to many destinations including your home and from there through Indonesia to northern Malaysia, where we are now. If we can be any help to you, we would be pleased to assist. We will be sailing BeBe from Phuket to India, to the Red Sea, and into the Med leaving sometime in Dec/Jan...keep us posted of your progress.

in every country the law is different and i dont know how it is in brazil. you can register the boat in other country. for example in the usa. look at www.delreg.com
then you will have an american boat in brazil...

I am creating a new thread to answer your question because this Group is not accepting my reply to your question:

All of Raymarine clutches are 12 volt...even in a 24 volt drive system, the clutch is 12 volt...the clutch will work at 24 volts for about 100-150 hours before burning up.

Today, I installed a raymarine X30 computer along with a ST 7002 contol. They replace the original Type 300 24v computer and ST 7000 control.The new X30 has a switch for either 12 or 24v setting for the drive clutch.Can someone tell me if my clutch is 12 or 24v. ? If the old one was working I would have tested the output.The drive is probably original 1994. While I got you, I also was wondering if anyone knows of a source for the windlass switches.other than Amel.
