Your idea of prop-open the hatches is a great idea. We do have a problem with our back hatch and will get the material before going back to Leonore 2.9. Perfect timing, thank you. Hi Ian and Judy, I have never had to disconnect the forestay but usually have to disconnect the mizzen backstays and lower the SSB antenna. Not a problem as the travel hoist at San Carles is very big and swallows an SM with ease.They also have a tall permanent crane for mast removal. We are in Malta as we live there but cruise the Med June to October. This year we hope to do the Greek islands in the Aegean.Email us if you are coming our way...annejohnhollatgmail.com

Hi when seeking an arch you may want to check with Kato in Annapolis MD they are very good job of one engineering and fabrication. Keep in mind that you will need very strong backing plates to support an arch. You may also want to think about a generator like a Honda 2000i price per watt???

Hi Anne and John, Yes, it was following a posting by you on San Carles that we went there. We have stayed in the water--with 11 fenders, after your experience with the winds. Will be seeing Pen Azen mid Feb to see how she is faring. For anyone else who might be interested, this is a new marina about 180 km south of Barcelona, friendly and well priced as it is not near an airport. Good Volvo agent . Not a particularly interesting town and therefore not a great liveaboard destination, but good for a winter berth. Hi Ian and Judy, Yes it was my posting about 7000 messages ago, you have a good memory. The platic coating is an excellent addition and upgrades your device to become the Mark II model.
We left Bali Hai in San Carles over winter two years ago and were very impressed although it was still being finished.Our boat was on the hardstanding and luckily none of the yachts hauled out there were blown over in horrendous winds of up to 80 Knots which persisted for some 36 hours or so. This caused them to fit eye bolts in the concrete so that they could tie the boats down. This was a great idea except that they put the fixings in the concrete in front and behind the boats and then cranked up huge tension which must have tended to bend the hulls fore and aft. Why they did not put them either side of the boats is beyond me as they are much more likely to fall over than somersault. In the event the only damage to Bali Hai was that the Windex vanished into outer space. When we returned to commission the boat we rented an apartment at very reasonable cost from the Brit who runs the English language shool. Fair winds, I hope. Anne and John, SM319 |

He was able to get a complete reconditioning kit for the engine shipped out from the UK and now has a very good engine to continue his voyage Reverting to the website and blogging on it, George provides one user access for free and I thoroughly recommend it to long range cruisers. Hi all, we too like to have the screen part open and we use a 600ml plastic water bottle (full to give it stand up ability) When the main is in use we have the bottle on its side giving a small opening but keeping the sceen out of the way of the mainsheet traveller, next stage is on end giving half open and then the standard strut for full. We use another bottle as a low tech prop for the aft cabin widow in the same way. The bottles are very kind to all surfaces.

Interesting ideas. A few years back I think it may have also have been a Bali Hai idea to use a piece of wood about 8" x 3" x 1" to prop open the windscreen if it didn't merit being fully opened. Since then we have used such a piece of wood ,coated in a soft plastic.It gives three choices of air flow and , as befits such a high tech gadget , it's been christened The Cockpit Variable Air Flow Unit.I can recommend it. As a sailmaker who owns a Maramu I have some ideas for your sail. Your cruising chute should be designed differently than what most sailmakers suggest to cruisers which is an AP (all pupose) cut. In a nutshell the sail should be cut more as a reacher. The rationale for this is simple. The Super Maramu can make effective use of the balooner and has no need for a cruising chute until you reach a wind angle somewhere around 135 or 140 degrees. So there's no need to stretch the effective wind angle range of the assym to the usual target of around 150-155 degrees. You could even consider something more on the order of a Code Zero type sail that would be effective for close reaching. Depending on your budget for the project there's a lot of options. The ideal would be building the sail with a specially developed cloth from Dimension Polyant called CZ. The sail is built with an anti-torque luff rope so it can be flown from a continuous line furler. This greatly simplifies handling. A short sprit should be fitted regardless of what material you choose. If you want to do this more economically the sail can be built with a high quality nylon and deployed from an ATN sock. When I sold my 1986 Oyster 435 in 1999 the Volvo MD30A had done about 15,000 hours and Jason,the new owner renamed the boat Trenelly and set off around the world. Small stuff and the Thompson Clothes Washer

We have had an intermittent problem (don't you hate those) with the clothes washer. It recently and intermittently has failed to pump out. I thought I solved the problem by vacuuming out the clean/out inspection port on the front bottom of the machine, but the problem came back to haunt me. Today, I placed the drain hose on the wet/dry Vacuum and opened the inspection port. I ran the vacuum for 1-2 minutes. Viola, out comes a twist-tie...problem solved. Apparently the twist-tie was somewhere in the pump.
