Hi under the quadrant at the top of the hull there is a large nut there is not much space it is there that is what holds in the packing.

Thanks for your reply. There is no obvious nut on our rudder post unless it is recessed into the tube through which the rudder post exits the boat. Is the nut on your boat obvious and just a large hex nut? or is it recessed? Many thanks Deb and John Maramu Orion1

I tried to remove the shaft on the main outhaul motor to no avail. I tried
my usual bolt in the bottom trick and hit it with a 5 pound sledge hammer, to no avail. I then used a chemical called PB used to break rust on blast furnace door hinges. Also no good. I even used black cap screws to hammer on the shaft with a sledge hammer ( they are rated at 10,000psi and do not bend like the s/s/ ones. ----nothing. I tried a torch, nothing. I finally removed the boom and turned it upside down on the deck. I remove the bottom plate of the gearbox, with the boom supported at the mast end with wood and put another black cap screw in the shaft. I cleaned out the rust and could se the keyway which I loaded up with PB. I then got a real big sledge hammer and went medieval on the shaft. It finally moved, and I drove it out. I did bugger up a few threads in the shaft which I fixed with a tap and all is now well on kimberlite. I will now, as suggested, remove it every time I change the oil. I am also going to add zerk fittings to the shaft housing and gearbox so I can grease these without removing the shaft. I believe being able to really hit the shaft cleanly in a normal manner and not upside down did the trick. The shaft and key seemed surprisingly clean, the mating surface in the gearbox seems to be the problem and rusted. It was late today when I finally got the shaft out. If you have a flat wrench you can get at the nut without having to remove the cables. And then tighten the nut we ve done it a sea under way. Running befor the wind with the sea pushing we had some slight leakage.

I have not replaced it, but I did tighten it. We were getting a little water in rough seas. You have to remove the cables and quadrant...then the lock that holds the large nut. I was able to turn the nut about 1/2 turn...stopped the water.

HI, yes you can replace the seal from inside the aft cabin.
1- Get a large wrench that will adjust to fit the rudder post nut. (you can get them at West and Defender or other marine stores.) 2- You will have to remove the quadrant on the rudder. That may also mean taking off the rudder indicator for the auto pilot. 3- There is a tab on the nut to stop it from turning remove it. 4- Remove the quadrant you will need to use some CRC 5 56 or some other penetrating oil. 5- Remove the big nut on the rudder shaft. 6- Use a pick to remove the old packing. 7- When installing the new packing cut the corners on an angle for a better seal. 8- We used several rows of packing and coated it with silicon grease. 9- Re-install the nut (do not install the tab yet) 10- install the quadrant and turn the rudder to seat the seal. 11- Re-tighten the rudder nut and install the tab. I'd really like to have the seal in place. I am aggravated enough at the Amel price that I'm determined to find it without going thru them. They won't send me the little sliders for the curtains without using FedEx which will cost waaaay more than the sliders. Still trying to find them without using Amel. I read that Amel really stands behind their product, but they sure are difficult to deal with and they charge enough for replacement parts that it's really just gouging. I am myself 184 cm (don’t know how much that’s in feet/inches) and yes, the berths are a bit short for me. But when sailing it’s no problem and moored you can fit the extra width inserts and sleep slightly diagonal. I have thought of a more permanent solution involving cutting a hole in the aft bulkhead and prolonging the berths around 10-15 cm. This can probably be done nicely and naturally totally secure and watertight as things should be on an Amel.

Hi Kent,
We replaced our deteriorating plywood companionway with a medium tinted plexiglass, which is absolutely super for letting light in when you're closed up either in inclement weather or simply for security while sleeping. Our weather stripping had failed and we didn't want to risk scratching the new plexiglass, so we simply removed it. There's only about a 1/16 inch gap left and the only time water gets in is when we wash down the cockpit - then it drains into the bilge sump thru the hose at the bottom of the well. Keeps it clean. So no replacement at all might be a fine option to consider - I can't imagine it being a safety issue.
