boat insurance

john martin <symoondog@...>

Thanks much to Kent on KRISTY for his referral to Stephan Rathsack of Keenan Marine Insurance for boat insurance. Phone 914-631-1600 and emal stephan@...

We recently got several quotes from different brokers/underwriters and the policy thru Keenan (from Lemma Europe) was by far the least expensive, had the lowest deductibles and best met our cruising/navigation needs. Their "hurricane box" is the smallest of all quotes we received: it excludes Grenada, the southern Grenadines, northern Bahamas starting at Georgetown, and all of Florida (12 deg 40 N to 23 deg 30 N, 55 to 85 W). It covers all of Venezuela (mainland as well as islands) as well as the western Caribbean/Yucatan, year-round. Policy does not cover singlehanded navigation (at any time), races/regattas or living onboard when on the hard (due to the on-hard discount). Premium for $325k hull value (2% deductible) and 6 months on the hard was $4000. A new survey was required as our last one was in 2002.

Some limitations from the other quotes we got were: huge hurricane box, requirement for yacht to be in a cradle during hurricane season (jack-stands unacceptable), no coverage in any part of Venezuela or western Caribbean such as Belize, Honduras etc, and much higher deductibles along with much higher annual premiums.

man overboard retrieval using Life-Sling and mizzen boom

john martin <symoondog@...>

We don't carry a man-overboard pole on MOON DOG, but we do have a Life-Sling on the aft rail. We recently experimented with retrieving a MOB in a Life-Sling using the mizzen boom, and it worked really well.

On an offshore passage, I insist that every person in the cockpit carry a waterproof handheld VHF locked on channel 16. Having experienced a man overboard situation in 30+ knots of wind, I can attest to the fact that you can't see him or the pole most of the time, and losing the sight of him is the norm. If the person in the water is wearing a life jacket (inflatable or otherwise) and retains his mental faculties, then he is in the perfect position to instruct you (using the handheld VHF) on how to maneuver your boat back to rescue him. Then your only concern is to throw the Life Sling out, make sure sheets don't foul your prop, tighten the boom, and follow his directions back to you.

After he says he has the LifeSling, then you use the mizzen boom to get him back on board. First you release the mizzen sheet from the traveller. I made this easier by adding a snap shackle to the U-clamp there for quick easy release. Next tie the mizzen boom tightly to the aft mizzen shroud, to keep it from swinging back and forth. Let the mizzen sheet out so the snap shackle end is available for the man overboard to snap it to the LifeSling. Then take one turn on the mizzen sheet around the mizzen winch and then four turns around the mainsheet winch and use the electric main winch power to pull him out of the water and onboard. This system is particularly useful if he is injured and can't easily pull himself onboard some other way.

Of course, getting a MOB up the Amel reverse-transom stern or using the swim ladder are obvious options but could be very difficult in big seas if the boat is rolling much. The swim ladder will swing away from the boat and there is no way to secure it to the hull. The stern doesn't offer alot of room or leverage such that another crewperson could help a MOB much, especially if the MOB is injured.

Like to purchase in US, sail back to Australia

Jim Koulias <jk@...>

Hi there all. I am not yet an Amel owner but joined the group a while ago. It's great to see the power of a strong worldwide boating community all keen to help each other. I'm considering purchasing an Amel in the US to sail back to Australia (Sydney). I need to find a knowledgable/highly reputable broker specialising in Amels in the US (preferably West Coast). We will need to put a lot of faith in someone's evaluation / recommendations prior to travelling to the US for a pre-purchase inspection. Any help would be appreciated. We'd be looking at a pre-2000 model based upon expected cost.

Regards, Jim

Raymarine plotter issues

Dave_Benjamin

I was in San Diego a few days ago and spoke to a broker and a few other people who explained that Raymarine has been having problems with their plotters blanking out. Apparently their tech support people have been instructed to blame power issues on the boat but if pushed hard enough, they will arrange for repairs. It's apparently a known defect.

I know someone recently made a post describing some problems with their plotter which they thought were a boat electrical issue. Raymarine tech support in the US can be reached at 866.244.3372

Re: Maramu engine replacement

Bob,

Our Maramu and a few others that I know of have been repowered with a 75hp Yanmar turbodiesel. If you plan to keep the boat long term it may be worth considering.

Have other owners of this engine has the same problem and do you know if there is a suitable replacement engine that will fit? Rail Gate for Santorin

Chris Smither <yachtakwaaba@...>

Hi there,
We, hopefully, like our 1990 Santorin Sloop, are both ageing gracefully, and have heard of a modification to the stbd guard rail to create a "gate" above the swim ladder.
This would greatly ease our cruising for both swimming and dinghy access.
Has anyone made this change....know of drawings or photos......that they could post, or send a link for us to access???.

Thanks

Mike

Re: Airco AMEL 54

Craig Scott

We have the same AC problem. Have had several communications with the yard about the units freezing up and the only solution to date has been to take the units off auto and set the fans on the highest or second highest speed. When comparing this problem to the CruiseAir units we had on our previous boat (which did not freeze up) Amel said it is because Climea does not have a sensor to detect a freezing up. I suspect they are working with Climea to get a fix for future boats, but I think we are stuck with this.

Having sailed our new 54 first time in the Med this summer I have to express my big disappointment relating to the air-condition of the AMEL 54. All three of the units tend to get icy because they are not able to cope with the normal heat of the Mediterranean summer. Once they are icy they do not produce cold air anymore. It might work up to temperatures around 25C but not above. Even if you follow the advice of Amel to go step by step to lower degrees it does not work. This is clearly a question of bad design. I never had this kind of problems with the aircons of the Super Maramu it is bringing some shame on the Amel yard. I talked to some expert who told me that the in- and outlet of the units are way to small. Now I do not know what to do. Does anybody else has noticed this problem?

Control of unwanted messages

lji004 <jose.luis.isasi@...>

Hi,

Some of you have realized I was lately moderating the messages to all the group.

The reason is that we had started to receive unwanted messages in our email addresses from the forum.

I think I have catched the address that was originating the issue and I am going to moderate just this one from now onwards.

Please, bear with me while I finalize this process. I will restore our group condition to 'unmoderated' as soon as I can.

Thanks and regards

Perfect tool for cleaning the Sea Chest fill pipe and seacock

Judy and Bill aboard SV BeBe <yahoogroups@...>

I have had various sticks, rods and pipes that I have used to clean out the Sea Chest fill pipe and seacock, but none of them worked as good as the one that I recently fabricated. You can see a photo and get dimensions in the photo section of this website at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amelyachtowners/photos/album/1208267126/pic/250648401/view?picmode=&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&count=20&dir=asc

I made it out of a piece of electrical PVC conduit with an OD of about 21.4mm and a bottle brush with an OD of about 40mm. I bent a small loop in the wire end of the bottle brush and secured it to the PVC by drilling and screwing a small stainless steel screw through the pipe, grinding off the tip of the screw.

Really works great. I think it should be required equipment!

Hope this helps some of you.

Best,

Bill

Aletes (SM2000 #240) has a Mastervolt Battery Monitor. Upon reconfiguring
the settings for a new set of batteries, we lost the display for % of
capacity remaining that showed with the t function. The t function now shows
hours remaining, which is the default setting but not nearly as helpful as
%. The manual has no references to a % function. Does anyone know how to set
up the monitor for %? Or am I misunderstanding the instrument?

this is, as you are correctly stating, a common problem of the 54s. I can cope

Anchor Cain Super Maramu...HT or BBB?

Judy and Bill aboard SV BeBe <yahoogroups@...>

I am looking for answers on SM2k anchor chain.

Here is what I know about the anchor chain on SM #387:
It is 10mm, ISO standard (the inside dimension the long-way of a link is 30mm...if it were DIN standard, it would be 28mm).

What I want to know:
Is it BBB, OR is it HT (high test chain)?

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Hydranet sails

Dave_Benjamin

Please note that Dimension Polyant manufactures two types of Hydranet cloth. One is a crosscut and the other is radial.

The crosscut has not held up well so not too many sailmakers will recommend it.

The radial cloth is excellent, however quite expensive.

We are building sails for a Catana catamaran right now using carbon/technora load path membrane which is more economical.

International demand for Hydranet is so low that Dimension Polyant now only manufactures when they have an order.
