Re: Anchor sizing

Hi Richard,
Not a direct answer to your question ...
I had trouble with my 30kg Wasi Bugel and replaced it with a 40kg Rocna which I've been happy with.  I would have preferred to keep the Wasi Bugel on the bow as a secondary anchor, but it doesn't fit cleanly alongside the 40kg Rocna.
I retained the original 20 (or 25)kg Delta as secondary.

I use the additional centre roller for a snubber. Interested to hear if there is another imaginative use for it !

Ken,
Great photos but your swivel is very different to mine. Mine is all traditional needle roller bearings, see photo. It seems to me that swivels in the 1986- 1989 period had at least three different types of bearings. I’m guessing mine is the earliest, then yours with the plastic bearings and finally the torlon ball type. Perhaps Olivier could comment?
The only way you know what you have is to open it up. I am writing a “how to” manual for the roller type since the tribal knowledge has long ago dissipated and I think Sharkis and Maramus of this vintage are now becoming prone to swivel failure. To my knowledge, there are currently three Sharkis who are wrestling with this problem.
Rebuilding the roller bearing type is not difficult, my biggest problem has been obtaining a replacement for the top bearing, with the correct geometry. It is a combination axial and radial bearing in one piece. Combo bearings are readily available but I couldn’t find them in the “Amel” size. It would be great if someone has encountered and solved this problem previously?
I have a solution but, since it is not an Amel equivalent, I can only give it a B+.

Hello,
I just bought an Amel 54. First anchoring trip, the 30 kg Rocna anchor failed to set and did not hold in soft mud, light winds.  I have had a Rocna 55 on a previous boat and loved it.  Any problems with that much weight for the windlass ( which on my boat is the original Lewmar)?  Any other problems?
I was thinking of removing both the 30 kg Rocna and the Bugel 30Kg and just keeping the Rocna 55 set to go, and one of the others as a backup stored elsewhere. Also, can you tell me what the SS fixture  with an additional roller the anchors is for?

Hello
Since yesterday when I tried to park in a box in a marina in Auckland my bow thruster motor failed.
If I turn the beam to the left or right the whole power supply breaks down for a moment. After that the power is back.
I took the rudder off and it can be turned perfectly by hand.
But the same happens with the engine. No power for a few seconds, all instruments off, no rotation of the motor.
Does anyone know this problem.
Does anyone know how I can find out if it's the motor or maybe a relay that doesn't work.
Can I test the motor without a relay, maybe on the 4 cables marked D1, D2, and A1, A2?
I am grateful for a quick answer.

Hi Paul and Sharon,

my Amel54 is a recent one, but I think all Lewmar windlasses are the same. I have recently changed the sensor with the original part of Lewmar, works fine.

When changing it be sure to have the right connection of the 2 cables (see the old one) in the bow locker. When your control in the cockpit remarks the new sensor and asks for the installation scheme you’ll get a list of 4 different schemes. Choose the 3rd one from top-down.

I give you the reference with Lewmar Sensor & Magnet Kit für V1-V5 Ankerwinde - SAILTEC - technical equipment for yachts and boats or https://www.sailtec.de/products-shop/details/4366.html

I installed the UDST800 this spring. Depth and temperature are working fine. Speed sometimes indicates just zero. Mainly when under engin. I think I will try to have it replaced under warranty. Here an interesting tread about it (last article has the same problem as I)

Anyone with experience of the Airmar UDST800 tri-data transducer? We have all Raymarine electronics including the tri-data transducer, getting tiered of cleaning the paddle wheel, and the Raymarine paddle wheel transducer is not very accurate even after calibration, guess small growth give faulty readings, else happy with Raymarine gears.

The UDST I supposed to fit in the same through hull fitting so installation should not be difficult, but price a bit! High, 1300 Euro. are there any other alternative?

We are choosing between Baltic carpets (with Latex price 110 Euro/sqm) and Launge carpets (without Latex 150 Euro/sqm).
Prices is for finished carpets, based on gross sqm area ( ca 7 sqm)

Re: Chain counter sensor

Paul,

The one you listed is for a SM2k and will not work on the Lewmar windlass.

The one JLMERTZ listed is an aftermarket replacement for the OEM Sensor for a SM2k. It will not work on your 54.

In fact, neither is suitable for your Lewmar 560 chain counter.

This is what you need:
