I had fun finding a leak. Eventually diagnosed and fixed by cleaning the built up carbon from the Bowthruster motor and the main anchor windlass. The light came on the negative test but only faintly. The builtl up carbon linked the motor negative side to Bowthruster case which is bonded to the rudder anode. Ditto with windlass. Worth checking. Nick SV Amelia Leros Gr

Jose,
I had a similar problem. with the Yanmar engine in my SM for almost a year which drove me mad. Finally I bought a new sea water engine pump more out of desperation than discovering the actual fault. When fitting the new pump I had the old and new pumps sitting together in the cockpit. I thought I was imagining it, bit when I checked the old one with my callipers the chamber that houses the impeller was almost 2mm wider than the new one from wear. Fitted the new pump and the temperature returned to and stayed at 80C. Trevor Lusty Ireland

Re: B&G Sonic Speed sensors replacement
Michele, I did this last year with Gary Silver. It wasn't hard. The sensors in the boat and keel, were just pushed in. We carefully drilled a small hole into each broken sensors (this was the hard part) and then put a screw in the sensor. There is a hard piece of something inside the sensor, that took some patience to drill through, We made sure the cables were loose and pulled on the screws and the sensors came right out. I believe Bill Rouse has a write up on it....

Re: 24V+ Isolated Ground Leak
Paul Stascavage
Bill R.,
Those wires appear to go to the stereo system amplifier, but they are not the root of the problem as disconnecting them didn’t make the issue go away. However, I am keeping then disconnected until I can find a better negative terminal to connect them to. Alan, In my earlier post, I thought that I had identified the problem circuit as being the instruments/devices connected to the Navigation Breaker as I was not seeing house bank voltage when testing with the breaker off. The problem is however, I was doing the testing on the Nav Bus behind the navigation station. When I test elsewhere, I still have house bank voltage on the positive side. My situation is basically identical to Marks’. My Masse Light is working, When I install a jumper wire from the positive terminal on the Nav Bus to bonding and turn the Masse Light to + the light shines brightly. Likewise, when I do the same using the negative terminal and turn the Masse Light to - the light shines brightly. However, with no jumper wires installed, I get no illumination at all, and I have checked in the dead of night. So as you said, there has to be a connection somewhere, but also like Mark, the leak has to be small if the Masse Light does not illuminate correct? Is there a way to check current flow through the bonding wire with a multi meter? If so, what is the procedure? One last question. I searched for the abbreviation “ve” but could not find anything. I assume it means voltage but is there anything special about using ve vs V? All the best, Paul Stascavage SM #466 - s/v Rita Kathryn Currently Exploring Huntington, NY www.RitaKathryn.com

Bob,
This is a good idea. I agree that in the tropics running the generator + water maker+ Bat Chargers can cause create a lot of heat. Increasing the air flow can only help. Also adding and pointing a fan to the high pressure pump of the water maker is something I have in my list. Jose Ipanema SM2k 278

Danny,
That is the same size as I have decided on. They are only 180w , 12v but I have three 140w already. Since what I have is three 12v panels in series ,I was advised to stay with 12v panels and connect them in the series ,this way I do not need to add another controller ,since what I have can handle up to 1200 watts.
Could you tell me how you mounted them ,did you buy the mounts or make them ?
Thanks,
Pat

Re: Lithium Battery BMS
Juan
I bought 16 cells from RJ in China in total 540 Ah 24 volt (2700 USD free delivery, Portugal), opted for a high quality BMS MasterLi including high quality Contactors ( 750 A continius load) Cost for BMS contactors Busbars fuses etc close to 2000 USD. The BMS workshop with a AUX lead acid battery, taking the charge from what ever you charging your Li pack with when the charge relay open, so no risk for regulators it always work towards a load. I use my Victron MultiPlus who is controlled directly by the BMS, My old original Dolphins charger also works without problems, of course Solar MPPT works great as well. For the Alternator I used my previous installed Balmar external regulator works good. The BMS cut the field line a few seconds before the charge relay opens, that to protect the Alternator. The good thing is if the BMS or Li pack malfunction I can still run communication and navigation from my AUX battery. Have had the system now for 6 month, very pleased so far. But part of my satisfaction is due to 1,4 kW of solar power. Do all the cocking on induction. Run the calorifier from the inverter. Paul on SY Kerpa SM#259

To be able to store the dingy in the aft lazarer, you can’t have a solid bottom. You have to be able to fold it.

Here is how we store our dinghy. Having a slide we mount over the aft it is super easy to launch it and get it back up again. We have hade this system for 16 years, sailed Europe-Caribbean back and forth and many years in The Med. We do have a cover that we put on during lo g distances over open sea to prevent it to be waterfilled. Not a very goid picture but it is what I have availeble right now. Re: Hypalon-RIB 250cm storage
Hello Slavko,
Would you get it in the lazarette? I doubt it. We have a 2.6m Highfield RIB and we store it upside down on the aft cabin roof under the mizzen boom, bow facing aft. It JUST fits. We had a custom elasticised Sunbrella cover made for it and it's held down with webbing straps to the rails on the cabin roof. We have sailed across the South Pacific with it like this and have not had any issues even with white water coming over the boat. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Lithium Battery BMS
I am planning to replace my 400 ah 24v gel batteries with Lithium batteries.
My charging devices are : Alternator Mastervolt 24v 75 ah Mass combi Mastervolt 24 v 60 ah , 220v 2600 w MPPT victron with 1500 watt of solar panels Mastervolt lithium batteries are extremely expensive. since my boat is in the Caribbean I was looking into American providers like Battle Born batteries or equivalent. I have concerns regarding the overall security of the installation. Mastervolt and Victron batteries BMS send a message to the charging devices before security shut down to stop charge. i did not find the same capability with batteries have an internal BMS like Chinese or US lithium batteries. What is the risk for the charging device (charger, alternator, MPPT solar) if the battery is suddenly disconnected by the BMS during the charging process. . I know Sv Delos is using Battle Born batteries, do you what type of solution they have implemented? if there a solution to interface a Battery BMS with Masterbus to send the message “ stop charge” to the Mastervolt charging devices? best regards. -- Juan de Zulueta OPHELIE X Super Maramu #32

Re: LLC or Corporate ownership of vessel
Teun,
I have always been very honest with the insurance company about how the vessel ownership is structured. I have a string of emails where they have approved various address scenarios. Using a corporate address is entirely on the up and up. I was told this is the way most mega-yachts are structured.
With best regards,

It is not necessarily that simple. Until last year I had my boat owned by an UK corporation which was owned by a HONG KONG Holding which ultimately I own; she was Dutch registered; I hold Dutch passport; but also USA as well as CHINA legal residency. Still several insurance companies were asking about ultimate beneficiary of these corporations.
In 1 case I was asked where I file my taxes which is both in USA as well as the NETHERLANDS. As soon as they realize the USA connection they refused my application.
Also - it is very possible to avoid or down play my USA connection (f.e.: by using the address of my overseas companies) but I really don't want to run the risk once I have a substantial claim that they investigate and deny coverage under the premises that I didn't fully disclose on my application.

On the contrary, having the vessel owned by an LLC has many advantages. First, there is the obvious tax advantage. Second, if you are American and you flag and own your vessel outside of the USA, you can obtain insurance where other US flagged vessels can’t. When it comes time to sell the vessel, you can sell the entire corporation to the new owner. This way the new owner gets the insurance, licenses etc. I would never buy a vessel this way, but it is an option. Perhaps the best advantage is the protection of your personal assets should be find yourself liable in an accident or spill of some type. Keep in mind laws change from country to country but all will recognize limited liability.
One of the other reasons we put our Amel into a corporation was survivor benefits. As share holders, we both have ownership. A friend had a lot of trouble when her husband died in a foreign port. She found out the hard way how every country has different laws. The vessel was in his name and they refused to immediately acknowledge their US legal will. The vessel was seized. She had to hire a local lawyer and eventually got control of the vessel so she could sell it.
All port authorities understand corporate owned vessels. If a single super yacht has ever entered their country, then they understand. Every single large yacht is corporate owned. We are BVI owned and flagged and have never had issue with entering.
The cost can vary from country to country. There are big differences. Grand Cayman is one of the most expensive. Some countries require tonnage surveys and vessel surveys. You need to watch for annual fees and filing requirements for the corporation. Also, countries require registration renewals at various times. Some are annually which is a real pain if you plan to sail the globe.
If you have specific questions feel free to private email me.
With best regards,
Mark

Gregory I think your 54 is no 172. You will need to get the gearbox and motors from Amel. The motor you have is considered non-repairable.

Bob,
Thanks for the idea on how to check all the saltwater pumps for leaks in one go. I converted the heads to freshwater flush about 2 years ago so they are not a likely culprit. I also just changed out our watermaker membranes 2 weeks ago so we have the lowest TDS and EC water we've ever had. This leak is so minimal, that the Masse - light does not actually even light up. I only know that there is a connection between the bonding circuit and -ve because I can read house bank voltage between +ve and bonding. -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Camden, ME USA

B&G Sonic Speed sensors replacement
MICHELE LUCCIOLA
Hello and good evening from Rome
This summer I experienced on my SM2000 some troubles with the reading of the B&G speedometer.
I saw the documents in the files section, but there is not indication about how to replace them.
I have to replace the sensors (that I have found in Ebay) but I'm not sure that this is an easy work ....especially to remove the old ones. Does anyone did this job before? I'm very scared about the sensor on the keel....I have seen that the sensors are two little plastic tubes but I don't know how they are fixed to the boat because there is no o'rings on the tube so I assumed that the tube is fixed with resin to the hull and to the keel....
If possible I prefer to replace the sonic speed sensors and don't do a new hole to instal a new sensor; for that reason I will be happy to receive comments from you
Thanks in advance
Michele
