Running rigging
Hi,
Currently waiting out the pandemic in Pangkor Malaysia and trying to make the most of the downtime by bringing forward some refit work. Next project is to replace all running rigging. Any suggestions or is there a company that does packages based on your hull # such as Acmo does for standing rigging? Cheers Bryce Procter SM 2000 # 467 |

Re: Downwind sailing on Amel 54 and storm jibs
Sv Garulfo
I don’t know how people use their poles, but we have twin poles on our 54 and we never need much muscle power to set the one stored along the mast. We lower it with the winch, secure it against the staysail while it rests on the pulpit. Pass the lines. Raise it a bit, detach it from the staysail, swing it aft. Tension the various lines and finally tension the halyard. As always, it’s easier with 2 people but manageable singlehanded. The secondary pole, stored on the deck is more work, for sure. We used it during our Atlantic crossing in twin pole configuration. We set them before we left the Canaries and removed them after arriving in Barbados. We extended the genoa sheets to be able to use it with either pole without having to move the poles forward. Perhaps unconventionally, we also passed the gennaker sheets the same way to be able to use either of the twin sails on either side. We were able to run downwind 30° off DDW either side. I think our A54 was originally rigged with the 3 groove furling tube for genoa/ballooner twin sailing, but i suspect the previous owner had to abandon it when he upgraded the furler to a Reckmann, that may not have been compatible with that tube... shame. I know a55 have Reckmann furlers, but did Amel rig some of those with the 3 groove tube? Regarding storm jib, a tiny bit of main sail, being forward of the keel, would also do, i suspect. Hope that helps Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Tahiti, French Polynesia

Re: Velox plus
Patrick McAneny
Alan,
Yea, I used prop speed last time and it worked pretty well after a couple of years and 5000 miles. But, I have a can of Velox and is it worth using ,or should I spend $300 on more prop speed ,or there something out there that works well .I didn't have good luck with Velox , but it may have been a bad application, that why I am asking if anyone had good experience with it. Must feel good to be back on your boat, I think there is many owners that have had a long separation from their boat and sailing. I know I have ,about 1 1/2 yrs. ,boat back in the water very soon !
Enjoy,
Pat

Arnold, Did you sand your prop with 80 grit? I hate to do that to a new prop, seems a bit drastic ,but maybe that is why it did not work well before.

Anchor Watch/Security Alarm/Cell Phone
Thanks again to Mark and Joerg for the security and anchor alarm info. I'll check them out. Kristy did go astray at anchor in St Pierre, Martinique when I was ashore, after staying aboard for 18 hours because it took several tries to set the hook. I've since switched to a 40kg Rocna and am more confidant, but seeing your girl floating a km offshore in 600 ft of water leaves a lasting impression. I may have to get another cell phone and use it as the boat half of an anchor watch pair. If you haven't discovered the GoogleFi cell phone, check it out. It works in 250 countries with no international charges for data. About $75US for unlimited data that throttles you after 22Gigs. Kent & Iris Kristy SM 243 -- Kent & Iris KRISTY

Re: For those that missed the first procurement of Rub Rails
Patrick McAneny
Mark, My boat is only 13 boats newer than yours and the insert would be the same. However the reason I originally opted to have the inserts made here in the US. was due to the cost of shipping from France to the US. , Amel is closer to you in the UK. and the shipping may be less than from here ,but then again ,I think the cost of production or retail price was lower here. Anyone closer to Amel in France may want to consider which source would be cheaper when price, shipping and taxes are taken into account. It is always good to support Amel after service when feasible.
Good Luck, Pat

Rebuilding the main furler worm gear box...seal orientation
Hi All,
I'm rebuilding my gearbox for the electric furler on the Mainsail. Not the manual furler gearbox, but the one attached to the motor. I just did this a year ago, and there's water in it again. The shaft seemed smooth, and the race for the two upper lip seals was slightly pitted, so I used RTV sealant. I'm pretty sure the recommendation is to orient the seals so that they keep grease IN (ie with the springs facing toward the gears), but I'm thinking about orienting the two upper seals, or maybe just the outer one, with the springs facing up to keep water out. I don't think there should be any issue with the grease coming out of the top of the gearbox. Anyone ever try this? Thoughts? One seal or two turned around? Or leave as is and do something else? Thanks in advance. Stay Safe Have Fun Sail Fast -- Kent & Iris KRISTY

I may be wrong, but that car does not look like the original car I remember on early SMs. Maybe someone with an early SM can confirm or correct me. Bill

Mainsheet Traveller replacement on an early Super Maramu
Mark Barter
Unfortunately the mainsheet traveller on our Super Maramu has snapped. Luckily there was hardly any wind and the problem was easily contained.
I have attached a photo of the traveller car. On our boat the previous owner made so many changes that it isn't always possible to be sure whether a particular feature is original or not. I suspect the traveller set up isn't original because the ends aren't slotted onto the track properly. It looks like they were not installed at the same time as the track. I also suspect that the traveller car isn't original or it has been modified. Anyway, I need to remove the car and the only way I can see to do that without removing the track is by cutting the track at one end. Removing the track will be a nightmare because there are 30 bolts with flat screwdriver heads. I have tried a few and some will need drilling out. If anyone has any experience of this problem how did you solve it? Also, can anyone provide details of a suitable replacement? Many thanks Can anyone advise me whether r -- Mark & Nicky Barter S/V Nunky SM 110 |

Ken, I have just had my hull ,painted with Awlcraft slightly off white and the rub rail and boot stripe in forrest green, the new white inserts look great against the contrast of the dark green. I also had my bottom sand blasted ,sealed the keel and hull with barrier coat and this week I will paint the hull ,then finally back in the water after being on the hard for 14 months. The old girl has never looked better. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Let's wait to see how many people are interested in purchasing new Rub Rails. I just had my solid Rub Rails painted with Gel Coat, and the outside hull from the waterline to the rub rails was also sprayed with new Gel Coat. The work also included painting stripe just over the waterline with Red Gel Coat. When Aquarius splashes in December she will be like new from the rub rails to the bottom of the keel. The new white Rub Rails are a must. :) Each person should chip in the $54, and we can donate these funds to the Amel site. Let's see if anyone else is interested. |
