New owner of SM#121
Hi all,
I am the excited new owner the Amel Super Maramu #121. Olivier surveyed my boat in La Rochelle earlier this month. I'm the "young man" he refers to at the end of the Zoom meeting last week :) . He was so helpfull during the survey, took a lot of time to explain everything. I am very grateful to him. I've also been reading many many threads from the archives of this groups. This is a gold mine ! Thank you all for this. So my SM#121 is from 1994. She has been sitting at Amel's pontoon in La Rochelle for many years, her last two owners having used her as an apartment. The engine is around 1132h (only 100h since 2013), 318h for the genset, and 9h for the watermaker... Turbo is blocked, water pump is missing, batteries are dead, main furling motor not working, aircond not working, etc, etc... yes, I've got some work here, but I'm very excited. Apart from some (important) technical parts, she's in very good condition. Anyway, I'm sure I'll save a lot of time thanks to all you experienced owners around here ! Jérémy

We have a bar between the mizzen shrouds worked great for us, gives better headroom as well. Attache some photos, you also find photos on our enclosure if searching in the photo section on Kerpa Paul on sykerpa SM 259 Lagos

Hi Craig,
The cracks we have are tiny and really only visible in sunlight, with no creaking noise when you step around them, so I think we would be unlucky if there had been any penetration down to the balsa.

That being said, I recall discussion from, I think, Joel, that the "faux teak" gelcoat was often painted a bit too thick and can crack, but there is a proper thickness of white under it. I suspect the cracks in the brown do not go through the underlying white, much less through the laminate and into the balsam core. Others will comment I'm sure. If he has not worked on an Amel he would not know that the powers don't move. I'm sure Olivier would have commented had the stage not been as rock solid as they should be.
We have a full enclosure on our Santorin and it is like sailing in a pilot house in bad weather, especially with the heating on!! Ours however is designed round a bimini, which is possible on the Santorin as there is only one winch on each side of the cockpit.I But wIth for comment from SM owners. And enjoy your new boat! novice problem

Dear Amelians,
I have just acquired Borador, my first real sailing vessel.(I have had a Beneteau for 20 years but the feeling is quite, quite different)
Following this very informative group I asked Olivier to do the survey and I got a long but fortunately not too severe list of defects.
Quite happy with his assistance.
I'm planning to sail Borador from Valencia to Finland beginning April when the sea ice is melting here.
I must have a closed Bimini made in Valencia. Without being there, due to current European situation, I have to trust a lot to sailmaker.
The many pictures in this site have been very helpful.
Nacho is suggesting to put a U shaped tube fastened to deck close to mizzen mast.
I am more in favour of connecting this tube to mizzen stays like #299 but Nachos opinion is that the stays are moving and its not a good solution.
Unfortunately I must do it now, it can be a bloody cold journey.
May I have your opinion which way to go.

Since all the gray water on Aquarius is piped into the bilge, and then pumped out. For the washing machine, I would say that it's a good thing. Good flow of soapy water to clean out the bilge water a bit. The only thing I might want to change is to route the sink straight out of the boat.

Eleuthera is SM007. Being a few years older than your vessel, it had exactly the same problems. However upon purchasing the boat some six years ago, we used a product called Captain Tolley’s creeping crack cure. Still a good solution many years later. One caution; when you do the work ensure you follow the application instructions. Otherwise you’ll end up with some residue on the decks. Don’t ask... Nothing to add on the drain arrangements, the normal bilge is where it should be going. On the question about the water pressure, it is useful to remember that all of these machines are designed for, and mostly used with normal household water systems. Pressures from 25PSI to close to about 80 PSI are "normal" for city water systems, although I have seen higher pressures in some places, close to 100 psi. Anything I'd expect to see on the boat should be well within the design range.

Pen Azen is 20 years old and has about 65,000 miles under her keel. On the faux teak deck she has a number of hairline cracks, hard to see unless in sunlight and about 1-2 cm long. They are in random places, a few clustered around the point where you step
off the deck into the cockpit on the starboard side. They are not structural but should be filled as otherwise water can penetrate and damage the balsa.
It's a tricky job to enlarge a crack sufficiently to fill it and the result will never look perfect.
The chap who is going to do this for me asked Amel what fibre glass they had used originally but cannot get a reply.
Has anyone carried out such repairs ? if so I would be interested to hear if they have any tips as to what they used and the finish that they managed to achieve.

The folks at SOFOMARIN in France (supplier to Amel for PVC manifolds for the 55, 50, & 60) and I have been working on a PVC Secondary Saltwater Manifold in PVC for late model SM's.
The original Saltwater manifold looks like this:
The Secondary Saltwater Manifold we are designed looks similar to this, but assembled by gluing and welding. In the photo below parts are taped together.
What I would like to do is to have 1 or 2 SM owners order and install the above design (see attached proforma). I am 99% sure it will work, but you never know. In case there are any issues, it would be best if an owner of a SM located in France or Europe is the first to try. The cost of the manifold complete is 437.36 euro less 15% or 371.76 euro. This includes 1 meter of 35mm wire reinforced hose to replace the secondary manifold to the primary manifold is included. That hose is hard to find.
Please let me know if you will be the first to try this.

Hi Mark, I did end up moving the motor mounts. The ones closest to the "C" drive remained basically in the same place. Center pin is approximately 2" aft of "C" drive body. Both sets of new mounts are centered 18.25 inches apart. The aft (towards stern) are 39" back (on center). Forward I used the HY150, for the aft I went to the HY230 (This takes bulk of weight from engine and 24v alternator). Note: I did this install myself and in no way consider myself an expert. There is a slight vibration when idling in neutral, but smooths out completely when placed in forward or reverse. I'm guessing that is normal. Thanks Dan Feierabend SM #86
