Re: Perkins Prima M50 Transmission ratio
Hi Aras,
the ratio on my original Perkins M50 / Hurth was 2,74:1 The prop is the original 19 x 13. I am in the process to replace the engine by a Nanni N4.50 with TM 345 gear box with a 2:1 ratio. The yard will adapt the prop. Volker Mickmoon, Sharki no. 176 |

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Anchor Locker
Wanted to reinforce James's comment where he says "I try to pull my anchor chain out each time I am in a marina, rinse and dry the locker....I also keep the chain door open to vent as much as I can so that things can dry inside the locker." In addition to keeping down wood rot it also prevents chain rust and I am willing to bet that most chain rust occurs in the chain locker when the chain is coated with damp salt for long periods of time.
Securing the chain locker access door can be a challenge . I was recently running through photos and ran into this photo of a project I completed while we were locked down in Santa Marta, Colombia for 7 weeks about a year ago! Using re-purposed stainless door stops you can make your locker door easier to position and perhaps it works as an incentive to vent the chain locker or to spray it out after chain is removed and rinsed with fresh water. Self explanitary project photo is here-- https://photos.app.goo.gl/xrf5V6TP3dL5g9mx7 The door is easy to "hang" on the opening while you dog down the wooden bar--all while trying to avoid crushing the AC ducting with your elbow! Best to position and mark the holes of the door stops while the door is correctly positioned and then remove and drill and secure with screws--make sure you buy ones that are tall enough to grab the opening. You can also add horizontal positioning but it seems unnecessary. Bob and Suzanne, KAIMI SM429 |

Ours is in the lazarette, starboard side and it's actually copper foil, not a wire.

Re: Self Insurance
If you are having trouble with insurance, contact The Marine Shop in NZ or Topsail in the UK. Both will write a policy with an A+ rated underwriter. If you are an OCC member, Topsail has a partnership with the OCC and offers members a discount. Both offer policies in US$ or Euros. In addition, there is the Growie Jackline insurance in the USA, SSCA can get discounts. Again, A+ rated underwriters but much more expensive than the UK or NZ (and will require a recent survey and rig inspection).

Re: Self Insurance
Hi Bill. Yes, if this is successful, the plan is that owners be allowed to opt in to the plan at any time (assuming there is enough critical mass to even begin such an effort). I actually live right on the shores of Lake Simcoe although right now you can drive on it and people are essentially living in ice fishing huts at the moment!

Hi Brent, I see that you sign as a "Future Amel Owner", and that gets to the root of my question. If I haven't yet become a "Current Amel Owner" when this Amel Owners Insurance Group is officially formed, will there be a way for me to buy in once I have purchased my boat? Cheers, Bill P.S. I see you live near Lake Simcoe. I used to spend most of my summers in the Kawarthas when I was a kid. Beautiful area! |

That makes sense! Thank you Bill. Do you know the place where the wiring for SSB ground plate (on the skeg) emerges into the hull, and the color of that wire? |

Re: Self Insurance

Pantanaeus gave me reasonable notice that they were pulling out of the USA market (and have been otherwise pleasant to work with, I'd contact Lisa in their NY office again), but this was in the height of COVID here so working with a yard and surveyor to get things done for the standard insurance companies would have been a hassle bordering on unmanageable.
I did find one that would handle it on short notice without an additional survey (and at a reasonable price!) though the cruising limits are tiny. I really don't blame them for that even though the limits are almost comical because I pretty much asked them for liability coverage and said that given COVID I didn't plan to really go anywhere far from my California USA slip for a year anyway so quote me something... and they did. An owner's association plan would be interesting. I'd be interested to see how something like that can be structured (neutral underwriting and claim processing). -Nathan Maramu #29 On 08.03.2021 13:26, Teun BAAS wrote: Miles, Brent et alia,<SNIP> Best Regards Teun |

Re: Self Insurance
Miles, Brent et alia,
Not only the fact that the carriers refuse to renew is bothersome but, in my experience, you get this notice ONLY 3, maybe 4 weeks ahead of expiration; now adding the additional “ beat the dead line” pressure in the search & research for a new insurance provider. Originally my agent offered a cover which was almost 3 times what I paid the previous year to which I replied “not a snowball’s chance in hell” am I going to pay that. However, searching for almost 2 weeks to no avail I was mentally getting ready to pay this amount when he returned with my current policy which, although USD2K more expensive (of which about USD1,100 Dutch Insurance taxes simply because the boat was registered in THE NETHERLANDS), then my previous insurance I accepted.
Talking last year to several parties involved (owners, agents as well as front companies, re-insurers in LONDON etc.) I have come to the conclusion that obtaining cover is going to be far more challenging than “can I get a better price”.
Therefore – being able to get some control of the process by developing an AMEL Group insurance would be extremely helpful. In order to help the small research
team pls IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY, please

Perkins Prima M50 Transmission ratio
Would anyone know the transmission ration for a Perkins Prima M50 engine with a Hurth transmission gear ratio? My prop measure 19".
I'm replacing my engine with a Beta Marine 50 and TCM 60 Tranny (2:1) gear ratio. To the best of knowledge this should be fine....unless someone has other info. So with a new engine painted red, I should be faster! Alot faster than I am now..... Aras Grinius Sharki #163 1988 |

Re: Damaged Chock
Steve Leeds
Aras, I believe the chock is a Goiot but I don't find it in their current catalog. Maybe AMEL has one in stock. clean up the damaged deck, tape under the deck and wet out with West System epoxy and then fill with West System epoxy thickened with high density (404) filler. Don't over fill the hole as this stuff is super strong and does not sand easily. Get a gelcoat specialist to match and clean up the area you can see. If you can find the replacement chock, bolt one side and drill down through the new one. There should be a backing plate underneath. I you were using the same type of low stretch line that you show in the photo of the good chock, that helps explain what happened. You should be using high stretch nylon line for dock lines to absorb the movement of the boat and act as a shock absorber. I hope that helps, regards, Steve Leeds Sharki #121 1985
