Re: Battery temp monitor and alarm
I think I bought that one on Amazon for about $20. I is designed for a home. The probe has a wire about 1 meter long. It has an alarm. Shop Amazon and I sure you'll have several choices. My primary charger has a temp sensor, but that doesn’t give a readout or even work at all unless I am using the charger. With charging by a backup charger, Yanmar, and now Solar, none of which have a temp sensor, I want to be able to monitor temp in the battery compartment. I’ve been searching the net and so far only find monitors that will notify me by cell phone and other heigh-tech solutions. I just want a simple sensor with a remote monitor that I can set to give an audible alarm if temp exceeds a set value. Does anyone have something like this? Off course you only need to upgrade the mid and lower shrouds so your pricing will be less. I did receive a complete quote for all rigging that I will forward to you shortly.
I, like you, try to do everything I can myself, which is about 90%. It’s better to make a mistake and learn while help is available. However, the cruising season in the Med is short so I do elect to use known outside people if necessary so we get to enjoy the

Re: Important - Amel 54 and any Electrical Emergency
#IMPORTANT
Oliver Henrichsen, SV Vela Nautica
If I am not mistaken, some solar and windregulators need to be permanent connected to the batterie BEFORE any power is applied from pannel or windgen. If batterie is disconnected it will destroy the regulators. So read manuals on which side of the switch the regulator has to be connected.

Noting of course that the solar system should always incorporate breakers on the panel and battery side of the regulator. All interesting issues to consider when briefing crew etc. Dean

Re: Am I the only one so stupid?
Oliver Henrichsen, SV Vela Nautica
Hi,
After getting bored to set alarms for refill we placed a magnet into the rod and two reed switches in the scale, connected to our board controller. By that we get an alarm at refill close to overflow and an alarm when closing low level.

All,
Our 54 has a major design flaw. Or it’s not protected against stupidity, take
your pick.
Anyway I managed for the third time now to overflow the fresh water tank while
refilling. The problem is that the water does not simply overflows through the
filler cap. Instead it gushes out of the level meter pipe next to the
companionway right into the main saloon bilge that has no drain. Oops.
Anyone else has the same problem?

Hi Roque;
The crack that we found was in the swagging and not in the wires. It was not considered a failure by either ACMO or our rigger. ACMO did acknowledge that at the time our rigging was swagged, they had an older machine that led to the crack and we were advised
to simply keep an eye on it to make sure it does not get any bigger. The assumption was that the crack was there from day one.
However since we were going to upgrade the rest of the shrouds at the main, we decided to take care of this also so we don it have any questionable or potentially weak areas at the main.
We informed ACMO of the crack last month.

Re: Standing rigging on 54
Hi Roque;

I hope you guys are doing well and the engine issues are now behind you.
We are replacing all 6 shrouds at the main because ACMO had a crack in one of the original long shrouds that we found in our rig inspection last year.
They did extend a 10% discount because of this so the total shipped to Corfu was 5000 euros.
Off course you only need to upgrade the mid and lower shrouds so your pricing will be less. I did receive a complete quote for all rigging that I will forward to you shortly.
I, like you, try to do everything I can myself, which is about 90%. It’s better to make a mistake and learn while help is available. However, the cruising season in the Med is short so I do elect to use known outside people if necessary so we get to enjoy the
season.
The rigging is definitely one of them, at this point, for us. So I’m flying Ricky from Malta to Corfu for 2 days to take care of the shrouds and some lighting and wind cane issues.
Enjoy Tahiti. We chartered there in 2008 and had a great time.

The diesel dipstick works very accurately when it matters - with low fuel. A few months ago it read around 3 litres left in the tank and no problems.

Solar tax incentive -- ending soon
For fellow Americans -- If you didn't already know: you can claim a substantial tax credit for solar on your Amel. You can get 30% of the solar installation cost back as a tax credit. The incentive will decrease for solar installed in 2020 and 2021, and then it'll cease to exist (for residential) in 2022. I'm pretty sure the incentive applies retroactively too, but I'm not completely sure.
We successfully got 30% of our costs back for our 2018 solar panel installation.
and tons more info online.
(Obviously consult with a tax professional, etc etc.)

Re: TMD22 Emergency Shutoff
Bill, there is a lever next to the point where the throttle cable connects to the engine. Lift/ twist the lever and it cuts off the fuel supply just like the shut off solenoid would if there was power.
I painted mine bright pink(only highvis color available in Marin) so other crew could find it fast.

Yes, stopping the air input does work, but…it can be seriously hazardous to the palm of your hand if you do it by hand as the depression is quite strong. On the other hand (pun intended), if you use rags, they will be sucked into the engine. So some caution is necessary with this method.
