Thanks Mike. It'd be great if we could time it to leave more or less around the same time. We'll probably stick around DC this weekend and may just do an overnighter to get to Norfolk on Sunday.

D3-110 oil blow-by
Scott SV Tengah
Hi all,
My Volvo D3-110 is exhibiting what I think is blow by. Oil migrates up the return hose and slowly collects in the air filter. In the attached photo, I am pointing to the hose where oil migrates. I have read some articles that indicate that blow by indicates worn rings (only 2250 hours!) but also might be due to a failed/clogged crankcase breather or just because the tolerances are loose when the engine is cold, so there's inevitably some blowby. It's not a lot of oil, perhaps a tablespoon per 100 hours or so, but it's annoying in that it starts leaking out of the air filter housing, across the hoses and down to the engine room floor. Should I be worried? -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com |

Tips for the passage from Chesapeake to St. Maarten?
Scott SV Tengah
Hi all,
We're anchored in DC right now and will head south after my boss (aka insurance) allows me to do so. The intent is to stage in Hampton or Norfolk and make the offshore passage to St. Maarten. I believe it's a tad under 1500 nm. I know many of you have made this passage before so I am hoping to get some tips on how to best time it and also any tips in general. The east coast gets unpredictable in November and we're watching weather, trying to understand the patterns. The conventional wisdom of leaving on a NW'er doesn't seem to make sense for Norfolk because it seems it will take us 2 days to completely clear the Gulf Stream and we don't want to be out in it when the wind clocks to the NE. Other tidbits I've gotten is that it's not worth it to stop in Bermuda and plan on 10 days more or less. Head E-SE until we get to the 65W and then rhumb line it to St. Maarten. It will be just the two of us, FYI. Any and all tips appreciated. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com |

Re: Amel Santorin Specs and Alterations

My advice would be to become very VERY familiar with both models. You will then be able to evaluate different vessels and understand what prior owners have or have not done. One common thread that seems to run through the Amel product line is that Henri did things for a specific reason on a particular model - and that it seems to have worked out well over the years. I was always told not to change anything on the vessel until you have sailed it for one year; I think it was good advice.

I'd be interested in buying one.
Somewhat related but has anyone replaced the rubber hoses on their D3-110? Ours is around 2250 hours now and 12 years old. I presume the previous owner did not replace them. They look decent but failure will likely happen so I am considering pre-emptive replacement. I could just order from a marina-based Volvo dealer but I am hoping there's a cheaper source? -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com |

Amel Santorin Specs and Alterations
Orion Martin
Good evening everyone,
After many months of struggling between the Super Maramu and the Santorin, we have settled on the Santorin to do a circumnavigation. In the end the main reasons was cost and time. We considered the possibility that a circumnavigation would take three years, in which all likelyhood we would never use the boat again once we had finished. While the SM is the perfect boat for us (if there is such a thing in yachting), the expenses involved to get the boat up to scratch before we even set sail (let alone the cost of the boat) we found hard to justify for a three year trip. So our next option is the Santorin, in which we think we can modify the galley (to include washing machine and extra bench space), modify the portside seating, add air con to the aft cabin, possibly build a solar arch and install lithium batteries, plus standard antifouling paint/servicing/other minor modifications for under $300k AUD(including the purchase of the boat. Any thoughts on this scenario and its feasibility would be most appreciated. Regarding the Santorin, I have a few burning questions that i haven't been able to source the information for. Does the Santorin have: - Freezer under salon seating? - Any aircon? ( and is there space to install aircon units in aft/forward cabins and salon?) - Is the Santorin 12V or 24V, and what is the advantage of having 24V compared with 12V? - If I install the lithium batteries in the passageway, is it possible to fit a small generator in the engine room and do I need one? ( If I have lithium batteries and solar arch, I figure I may only have to turn on the main engine once a day to help charge the batteries with the lithium batteries holding enough power to run aircon in aft cabin during the evening). I understand purchasing a yacht I would most likely not make any money when it came time to sell, though in this case i would hope to break even especially if we went to the trouble of doing these modifications to the Santorin that future buyers would appreciate. The only thing bugging me is whether the total cost involved with such an enterprise would be mostly recovered or I am throwing good money after bad and could perhaps be better off spending more to buy an SM with less headache. Again thoughts and recommendations greatly appreciated. Kindest regards Orion |

Bill,
I may be interested in both. I have a D3-110i-C and MDKBN 11kva, and will be in Grenada next couple of months. I should be able to check them both out in November when we haul out.
I have cleaned up the genset elbow before, have not looked at the Volvo. Is this straightforward to remove?

Water ingress into forpeak
Some weeks ago I promised to send a photo of the leak into the bow thruster compartment.
The little gutter round the hatch has two drain pipes that connect to the box into which the thruster propeller is housed when up. The water was leaking where the hoses connect to the box. I smeared some black silicone around the hose and the leak stopped. Just had a good thrash round Cape Malea southern tip of the Pelepponesus. Now in Monvasia I thought I would check. Great - I am not in a hurry as engine was installed 17 months ago and I assume (hope) the original is still good: was going to get as spare. Same for Onan: we replaced with a new one at same time as new VOLVO installed.
Thanks for setting this up.
On the same note I had a new AMEL supplied 3 way raw water manifold which in my case attached to the plastic elbow coming from the raw water chest. As you know the original one on board when I got the boat broke off when we tried to replace the hoses;
ordered new from AMEL and installed Q2 2018 and was still corroding. In VANUATU I decided not to take the risk as originally I was going via THE BANKS into SOLOMONS and I had it replaced by an all plastic (I call it plastic but it is similar material as the
OEM water chest). So far so good but it is clearly an interim solution. It was suggested to me to see if the whole raw water chest including the 3 way manifold could be manufactured from non corrosive material. Looking at an AMEL 50 video (YouTube SAILING
AQUARIUS) I saw that AMEL is now having raw water manifold where the generator; engine; water maker etc. each have there own individual valve. Great idea.

Re: prop suddenly turning
Hi Miles,
We have the same sign on Cream Puff. There was a conversation previously about which gear to leave the vessel in when underway and Oliver confirmed Amels are fitted with varying setups and some are to be in forward and some reverse. I do know it is not good to have the prop spin while in gear underway with the engine stopped. I have only one thought. Is the prop clean and able to fold. If the prop is not feathering, this would add pressure to turn. Let's hope it is this simple. Re: prop suddenly turning
Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Hi Miles. I speak from experience with the Hurth/ZF non hydraulic gear box. The insructions that came with my new Volvo D2 75 on a helm station decal is to have the gear either in neutral (spinning freely) or reverse, never forward.HOWEVER, the purpose when in gear is to stop the prop rotating at all. The slow spin you are seeing will be wearing your plates. Put it in the gear that stops the prop dead. I have a wierd experience. Sometimes that is forward gear sometimes reverse. What I do is lift the engine compartment lid when I stop the motor and am sailing with the gear in neutral. Prop spinning merrily. I put it into gear. If there is a satisfying clunk and the prop stops dead. Thats the gear I leave it in. If it slows without the clunk I put it in the other. I have no idea why, but it has worked like that for years. I know the slow spin is damaging. There is no rhyme nor reason to this. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl On 28 October 2019 at 04:05 Miles <milesbid@...> wrote: |

Are these SS elbows the same for all VOLVO D3 110 – like I now have the “H” version of the D3?
Do they also make one for the ONAN generator model I have on board?

Jeffery,
Great!
HDI will use it to make a mold, then make an investment cast stainless steel elbow for the D3. For those of you that don't know what we are discussing, many marine engines including Yanmar and Volvo have either a cast iron or welded stainless steel exhaust elbow. These almost always fail, and seem to fail at an inconvenient time. I had my Yanmar welded stainless steel elbow fail in Thailand. The Yanmar OEM part cost me Yanmar list price of $500 plus $500 duty. HDI sells an investment cast stainless steel elbow for less than $300.
HDI is a Preferred Vendor of Amel Yacht Owners School. Many Amel owners have added HDI exhaust elbows to their engines. I did. As far as I know, everyone is satisfied and all are very happy with the product and price. I assume that HDI will have the D3-110 part available in 4-6 weeks. The contact information I have is: HDI Marine Ltd

Re: Infos about Break in the Main Mast Furler
Alexander
I and others have had the same issue. The motor is a common one, Leroy Somers as I recall, commonly used in winches so it can be found. Ours was so badly coroded to the housingthat we just ended up getting a new one from Amel. It’s such an important piece that we felt it worth it. The key is to keep an eye on that seal! And perhaps cover it when in storage to guard against uv degradation. Getting it in and out of the mast can be a bit of a head scratcher, but it does go. Best of luck.
