Re: Outhaul
Paul, I understand. However, if there were a source for the worm & spur gear, the gearbox could certainly be rebuilt. Amel previously stocked the Bronze Spur gear. They either made a decision to stop stocking it, or it became unavailable. I always thought that it was problematic for Amel to sell the bronze spur gear, because possibly the harder worm gear could also damaged. This would cause owners to be unhappy with the purchase of one, then having to purchase a second. --

Sorry for my lack of knowledge I thought the whole gear box was called a worm gear, anyhow I would like to have a whole gear box as a spare, not only the Spur gear Paul

Permanent 24 v to 12 v converter
I’m surprised about the function of the Permanent 24 v to 12 v converter. If I understand it right the only original function is to keep the memory in the FM/AM radio even when the main switch is off. The current when it is on is ca 0,5 volt, that is a lot of Ah during a day, or during a two-week crossing it’s close to 165Ah. That is a lot of waste unless you regularly run your gen set but we try to rely on solar. The only way to turn it off is to pull out the fuse. To me that is overkill to have such a heavy-duty converter for such a little use. When my friend changes his car battery, he connects an ordinary 9 volt battery to the stereo and that is enough to keep the memory. I have connected some 12 v appliances to the permanent converter, 12v led light in the galley, and a few USB outlets. Have I missed anything about the function of the Permanent converter? Nice Job Mark and Debbie,
is there a reason why you choose to run the wood fiber structure horizontal and not vertical? I assume it was done be the wood shop you had mentioned before. Sorry I missed you in Annapolis. kind regards Michael & Robyn RIPPLE SM2K #417

Outhaul
I have a few questions about the Outhaul
1. How do I secure that I got a water tight connection between the Electric motor and the gear box? see picture there is no gasket 2. What shall I use to "lubricate" the shaft with to avoid it get stuck again? Of course I will loosen it on a regular basis for "lubrication" 3. Anyone know where I can buy a new Leroy Somer worm gear see picture . Amel ask 730 € plus VAT and freight that will exceed 1000 € not reasonable Paul on SY Kerpa SM#259 Wintering in Lagos, Portugal

Re: Companion way for removal
Mark & Debbie Mueller
The other alternative is to replace the companionway door. Take measurements for height then section the door with a saw and remove the pieces. Select a wood of your choice and using the existing door as template for width and thickness, match the Amel door very closely, fabricate the sections and glue in place. In our case we used teak.

Thank you Eric for the first extensive tutorial,
Thank you Ian for the alternative product Thank you Bill for the very insightful questions. Even if there was some previous threads about this subject in the forum, we all need to clarify the most secure way to replace the veneer using a wood product and placing it also under the external guides because, in some rough conditions, if the job isn't made in using a single sheet properly glued, it can drive to a blocked companionway after sometime in bad weather which is highly undesirable… Ian, may be have you some images and a more detailed process and we can start here to make a detailed how-to. If we succeed, I'll update my external veener and post here also the details and images. Kind regards FF

Re: Companion way for removal
Paper not removed. We used contact cement. We did not remove the door. We spent lots of time making sure of the fit so that it could be cut right to the trim on the top and the sides. We were extremely careful with the placement. Of course, the bottom edge did not matter as we had cut it so it went below the gap/weatherproofing. Also, as with all veneer, the rolling is critical. Ian, I read that the product you used has a paper backing. Was this removed for installation? What did you use for glue or cement? Were you able to get the new veneer between the door and the outside trim? --

I’m really happy with my Incidences sails, they are so tough and showing no real ware after 6.5 years and after I think about 7500nm, I’m ordering probably a code 0 and a cruising Shute from them tailored for my 55 which should be great for light wind easy sailing Regards, Paul... Re: New Genoa sail for Amel 54
Hi Joerg, Thank's for the answer/post and information. I remember seeing both your and Paul's sails, I didn't know that they were Hydranet. The quotes from Incidences and Q Sails are really much the same, both recommending Hydranet. I just know my Genoa will not last another few years and would like to replace it before too long. I am planning on using our new Parasailor for the crossings, I really don't like the pole on the 54. Paul got me to use it on our run from Tunisia to Sardinia and it was difficult. Re: Battery Chargers
Thank you John. Did you confirm that it doesn’t have an internal safety ground that defeats the Amel isolated ground bonding system?
Will it be Lithium-ready if you go to Li in the future? Thanks again. Kent Kristy SM243 On Oct 13, 2019, at 9:24 AM, John Clark <john.biohead@...> wrote: Hi Kent, I have the Magna 4124 inverter-charger. 105 amps DC charging capacity...though that is a bit much for my battery bank. I got the remote control module which lets you program just about any charge profile you wish. I imaging the battery charger only version will have the same charging capabilities. I had no issues with the unit for first 8 months then the charging routine developed a mind of its own. After some phone troubleshooting the tech rep figured out the charging control board had failed and had the unit replaced under warrantee. No issues since. I got the inverter-charger unit so it could act as a whole house supplier of 230v/50hz AC. Our little 600w inverter is ok to run the ice maker and charge phones but not much else. With the big inverter we don't have to start the genset for short duration high power loads like a shop vac, microwave, toaster.... It wires in at the Amel auto transfer switch and is invisible. If we are not using it I turn it off at the remote control panel. The remote control is also handy. On the inverter model it can display the internal temperature of key electronic components...especially important if you install the unit in the engine room as I did. (FYI no temperature issues when located in the forward port corner. On Annie this is the area where air is introduced to the engine room.) I purchased the unit through Marysville Marine distributors.
