Hi, To apply laminate contact cement is used. Please remember to let both surfaces dry before joining the laminate to the door, When the two touch they cannot be separated, be careful.. I chose Formica brand laminate only because it looks closest to teak here in the USA. Just pick the one that you like, they are all basically the same. Just be sure to get the thicker variety of the laminate. Although the look is identical they often come in a very thin and a thicker style. Fair Winds Eric sm

I agree with Tom on this one. I spent ages looking for a leaking seal on my bow thruster. To no avail. Eventually I resorted to hammering to windward whilst locked in the forpeak with a headlamp. Within a few minutes it was clear that the source of the leak was not the bow thruster at all, but the hatch gutter drain that is piped to the Bowthruster box with a flexible white ribbed pipe. These white pipes are glassed into the box (that the thruster rises into when up) and it was there that the water leaked. Whenever the bow was buried into a wave it would spurt a little. At anchor of course it would be well above the waterline. It only happened when sailing in brisk winds. I was so sure that the pressure of burying the bow put the thruster seals under load and that they were the source.

Water in Forward Head Bilge and Bow Thruster

We have struggled on and off with small amounts of water in the bilge due to ingress from the bow thruster. At times perfectly dry, other times not so. Refining the hard seal seemed to help (the hole for the thruster had been modified by the previous owner).
One month ago we installed the special silicon seal that had been developed by Jose of Ipanema. This weekend (first at sea since then) I was distressed to see about one liter of water in the bilge. However, on closer inspection, the thruster area was bone dry (thank you, Jose). Further inspection showed the leak to be coming from the anchor wash pump, which had a disintegrating gasket. Very slow leak if the head through-hull is open, more vigorous when the pump was actuated. Just an FYI for all. Not all water in the forward bilge is from the thruster. Beware of false assumptions. Hi Kent, I have the Magna 4124 inverter-charger. 105 amps DC charging capacity...though that is a bit much for my battery bank. I got the remote control module which lets you program just about any charge profile you wish. I imaging the battery charger only version will have the same charging capabilities. I had no issues with the unit for first 8 months then the charging routine developed a mind of its own. After some phone troubleshooting the tech rep figured out the charging control board had failed and had the unit replaced under warrantee. No issues since. I got the inverter-charger unit so it could act as a whole house supplier of 230v/50hz AC. Our little 600w inverter is ok to run the ice maker and charge phones but not much else. With the big inverter we don't have to start the genset for short duration high power loads like a shop vac, microwave, toaster.... It wires in at the Amel auto transfer switch and is invisible. If we are not using it I turn it off at the remote control panel. The remote control is also handy. On the inverter model it can display the internal temperature of key electronic components...especially important if you install the unit in the engine room as I did. (FYI no temperature issues when located in the forward port corner. On Annie this is the area where air is introduced to the engine room.) I purchased the unit through Marysville Marine distributors. Hi Barry, I had a long discussion with one of the main sail designers of Incendence sails at the Cannes boat show, I expect they can arrange a great replacement as they have been installing sails to Amel for years, the sails on Fortuna are great and so strong they should last for many years. I believe they have all specs required for your 54 by hull number

The original Amel supplied Genoa has been very hardy and worked well. I don't want to buy a less quality sail. I think that the original Genoa sail supplied by Amel was called Hydra-net? Hi Miles, I wanted to replace the veneer on Kimberlites companionway and replace it with laminate. To get to the entire door off you have to remove the hard dodger.—NO WAY-- I removed the stop and blocked the companionway door all the way up till it touched the dodger. I then made a rail the height of the side trim. Using these rails and a router I was able to get to the edges of the door. Of course the veneer that is under the trim cannot be replaced but it cannot be seen. I then routed the entire door and applied the laminate- I used Formica brand color teak. Seven years and it is still holding up. However it is important to use wax to block the UV on the Formica. Pictures attached. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Hi Scott, we are on a mooring in Back Creek right in Front of Bert Jabins Yacht Yard. They have a couple of docks which they use for center console boats to haul in and out each time they use and they have power and water on these docks and they are not busy during the week so give them a call. we did it once and pumped our holding tnks at the same time, they only charged for the holding tanks as they have no way to meter the water so call them.

Quick logistics question for those familiar with the area: We will be leaving Annapolis sometime next week, heading down to the Potomac and then sailing (motoring) up to DC and would like to fill up on fresh water on our way. Any idea where we can do that? The marina we stayed at in Hampton had water at the fuel dock, so I'm hoping we can find something similar. Hi Miles,
I just did this job. Assuming the Maramu is similar to the A54, you just need to remove the small rectangular sheet of plywood that keeps the door from going too low. With it removed, you can drop the door far enough to replace the weather seal. I went nuts and removed the companionway steps - this is unnecessary unless you want to clean behind them while you're at it! If you close the door from the inside and look near the bottom of the door, there should be screws and bolts securing a rectangular piece of plywood, which itself is behind/aft of the companionway door. On ours, it's held by 3 wood screws and 2 bolts. Careful with the bolts as they have tiny nuts which you may lose as you're removing them. We just sanded the veneer with the door in-situ. If you want to remove the door completely, I think you need to remove the hard dodger. Hope this helps. -- Scott 2007 A54 #69 SV Tengah http://www.svtengah.com

Said she had Some of several different profiles that had been used over the years, and sent me the one she did based on my description and pic of my original. Battery Chargers
Hi All! Great to see/meet so many of you at Annapolis this weekend.
I am looking for a new battery charger. I have 8 group 31 Crown 130 AHr batteries for 520AHr bank at 24 V.DC. They require equalizing at 31V for 1-4 hours periodically. My Victron Skylla-i 80 amp charger has died and won’t be back from repair facility until after we leave. It wasn’t ideal because of safety limits built in that don’t allow it to adequately desulfate my bank. I’m looking for a 80-100 A charger that will do what I need it to do and will allow equalization to be started/stopped from the remote panel. Victron and MasterVolt don’t have that remote function. Im considering a change to Lithium, but am not ready to pull the trigger yet...it’d be better if my new charger would also work on a Lithium system if/when I make the switch. I’ve found two that look like they will do what I want , NEWMAR and MAGNUM. Does anyone have experience with these brands? Any other recommendations? thanks for you thoughts. In a big downpour in the way back home to via Azores we had heavy driving rain from the rear and some made its way inside via the companion way lifting door I think it was running down the outer face of the door then finding its way inside under the companionway steps. I’ve seen a number of threads about resealing the companion way door but I’m still unsure how to remove it The ply veneer on ours needs some love so I was thinking of removing the door, sorting the veneer and seal at the same time Any hints or tips re door removal and resealing much appreciated All the best Miles Maramu #162 Plymouth uk
