Re: Bow thruster seals
Stephen Davis
Earlier in this thread, Jose Venegas of S/V Ipanema references a prior post in which he posted photos showing his silicone bow thruster seals installed. We’re in the middle of installing the seals now, and searched high and low for his prior post. For those who follow and want to see it, it’s located here and does indeed show the seals installed. |

Re: A54 bow thruster directly to battery or through main switches?

This is very interesting since the service disconnect switch looks very similar to the Ecans Soderep S190 installed on my Maramu. I recently ordered a replacement from Amel for my original engine disconnect switch that looks identical to my original switch. I was having engine starting problems that I traced to an excessive voltage drop at the engine disconnect switch. Not having a spare aboard at the time, I opened up the switch expecting to find burned contacts but actually they are in almost perfect shape. The problem stemmed from the phenolic breaking around the bearing surface supporting the handle shaft which caused the contacts to sometimes not line up properly. Some epoxy restored the function of the switch and we used it without trouble for the rest of last season. I am mentioning this because I have read that others have had problems from these switches at times and at least in my case the issue was repairable and the switch is not hard to open. I will of course now install the new switch and keep the old one as a spare. It would be great if I could install a third switch like this for just the bow thruster loads. Would you by chance know the exact model of the switch shown in your photo? I would also be interested to know either the wattage/horsepower rating of the Amel 54 bow thruster to estimate the amperage draw to compare to mine. My Maramu has the bow thruster wired directly to the batteries which means that regardless of the switch position the circuit is hot. I would very much like to install a reliable service disconnect switch along with a fuse to better protect this circuit. I considered the S190 but was concerned about the 250-300 Amp continuous rating shown by the manufacturer. The peak load of this switch is however 10X higher so maybe it is sufficient due to the short duration of use? Would anyone know if this model switch would be sufficient for the approximate 4-500 amps that my bow thruster should draw at 12V? I am bringing a clamp meter to the boat soon to get a more accurate measurement. Thanks, James

Re: A54 bow thruster directly to battery or through main switches?
Hi Scott, On our 54 only the shore-chargers are directly connected to the batteries. Everything else is routed via the switch, excluding the battery monitor on the 24 volt panel.

Re: A54 bow thruster directly to battery or through main switches?
Scott, Yes, in other 54s there is are 24v cables +/- coming from the main switch. In this photo of an unmodified Amel 54 the positive cable from the switch to the Bow Thruster box in the bow is a black cable. You can barely see it. It is under the 110 A Alternator red cable. I believe that some of the 54 switches are wired differently. Please let me know if the photo below agrees with yours.

New Subgroup added
All, We have added a new subgroup that any interested member of the Main Amel Yacht Owners Group can join at will. The Commercial subgroup already has its first posting. Unfortunately, you cannot view the posting without joining the group (see bold below). Commercial Subgroup: This is a place that individuals and companies that have a "commercial" interest in presenting a product or service to members of the Amel Yacht Owners Group can post that information. The method of posting is an email sent to commercial@AmelYachtOwners.groups.io Commercial postings can be in any form the poster may desire. Complete contact information should be in the posting so that any interested party can respond directly to the poster, rather than replying to the email posting. All Commercial postings are moderated. The person or company interested in posting does not need to be a member of Amel Yacht Owners Group. They can simply send their commercial email to commercial@AmelYachtOwners.groups.io The postings in any of the subgroups can only be viewed by joining that subgroup (sorry we don't have an option with this). You can join any subgroup at-will and choose NO EMAIL, or other email options. ================================================ Below is the updated Main Group header information which is also shown at https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main The Amel Yacht Owners Group has over 1,300 members. Membership is restricted to actual Amel Yacht owners (present and past), those who plan to buy a new or used Amel, or those simply wanting more information about Amel yachts. The Amel Yacht Owners Group is independent and in no way connected to Chantier Amel, La Rochelle, France (www.amel.fr). This group is sponsored and supported by Bill Rouse, owner of Amel Owners Yacht School (http://amelownersyachtschool.com/) specializing in training new owners of Amel yachts and supporting current owners. Amel yacht owner, Bob Rossi, is supporting this group with the following domain: AmelYachtOwnersGroup.com. This URL makes it easy for you to always find our homepage and refer us to other Amel yacht owners. The Group allows a single sponsor to advertise on the Wiki (Help) page. That sponsor contributes to the future cost of maintaining our group on the Groups.io platform. The current sponsor is QSails, manufacturer and worldwide distributor of high-quality sails for Amels. Re: rub rail insert
I obtained my rub rail insert (I call it "scupper") from SAV in Dec 2017 for repairs Liahona ( Hull # 335) sustained during Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The material, including shipping (air freight) to Puerto Rico was $ 2,686 US. Removal of the original scupper is very quick (easily less than one hour), I wasn't present when they inserted the new scupper but did see it done to Liahona's sister boat, "Cloud Street" (Hull # 333 I believe) done a few weeks after my boat was done. I would estimate that it took two workers about 4 hrs per side to install the new scupper material.
Sorry for thread creep: Following hurricane repairs my hull, boot stripe, rub rail, and toe rail (including all hatch surrounds and hatch areas that were matching color) were painted with multiple coats of epoxy primer followed by multiple coats (5 as I recall) of Awlcraft. It was explained and demonstrated to me that re-gel coating damaged areas would lead to excessive porosity and poor outcome. It was further explained to me that Awlcraft was easier to repair than Awlgrip and that is why it was recommended to me. It looks great and my boat maintenance has decreased since I don't have to wax the toe rail and rub rail every couple of months. I choose Awlgrip for my deck-stripe repaint due to it being harder and more abrasion resistant. All the best, Gary S Silver s/v Liahona Amel SM 2000 # 335 Puerto Del Rey Marina, Puerto Rico |

Re: rub rail insert
Patrick McAneny
Steve, I awlgripped my boat 12 yrs. ago, and it looked like a new boat and has looked great for years. A 47 cat (rental boat) drug down on us , at 4am. in Guadeloupe last winter, thus the need for a new paint job. I think I will go with Awlcraft this time ,a bit softer but easily repaired ,unlike Awlgrip. I need to research that a bit more ,but a couple of painters have suggested I consider going with Awlcraft.
Thanks for info,

When we had our hull painted in Trinidad in 2016, it took 2 guys half an hour to remove both sides, and about an hour to re-install the old one after I had cleaned it up. I suspect the yard is bidding high because they don’t realize how easy the job is. You will love the look of the paint when it’s done, and ours has held up well. We did the boot stripe in awlgrip desert sand, and in the 2 stripe style of a newer 54...It looks really nice. Steve Davis Aloha SM 72...On the hard in Hawaii |

Main foil sheared
Paul Dowd and Sharon Brown
Hi all,
My main sail foil has sheared off just at the collar that connects it to the furler motor. I note from s similar recent post about a genoa that it may be possible to just lower the foil a few cm and reconnect. Would anyone know if this may be possible with the mainsail foil? I guess I could go up and see how much, if any, excess there is at the top. Failing this, any other solution?

Re: Engine Mounts and Decoupling Vetus/Engine Block
Herbert Lackner
Woody,
having the Amel shaft alternator you should make the "alignment tool" longer as you have to take away the shaft alternator pulley for doing the alignment. It works if you have the tool according to the spec that you find in the forum, but if I would do it again I would add the width of the pulley to the length of the tool, would make the alignment much easier. the process for the alignment itself is easy, in the water or on the hard, and you find all relevant information in the forum. I had problems to get the vetus coupling of the drive-shaft, but with a hammer, a big puller and a lot of time it worked. herbert, SN120 |
