We ordered the gasket that you are referring to from Amel and had no
problems with customs, etc. Language barrier was not an issue as we
dealt with all communications via email... Did as Joel's wife
instructed us to do. She gave great advice just like Joel. The only
thing I would say is order enough for two refits as the shipping was
more than the gasket. The gasket was about 45.00 US but the shipping
was 90.00 US Fed Ex. But we couldn"t find anything similar in our
research here in US. Installation was easy! And it works just like
it's supposed to. No water leaks!

the companionway.

The CQR gives satisfactory to very good holding in
most bottom conditions. I carry a Bruce as a back-up
or stern anchor, with 100 meters of line and 10 meters
of chain. In 95% of all situations the supplied anchor
will do the job well. The supplied chain (50 meters)
is short for my taste. I would favor 75 meters at
least and accept the bow weight penalty. I know many
anchor 3:1 on chain. I favor 5:1 if I have any doubt
about conditions, or 4:1 otherwise. Regards, Claude

The SM is a wonderful boat, fast and able in almost
all sea conditions. I can't compare it to the
Santorin, but compared to the Maramu it sails
consistently faster--in fact from the moment you have
12-15 kts of wind the SM just seems to fix 8 kts or
better boatspeed--and does not slow through waves. It
does take a great deal more spray! But, there is one
thing: I found the Gateff factory sails poorly cut,
unacceptably so. I have had them re-cut, which is a
temporary fix. This boat deserves really good sails
and that will be next, probably Doyle, maybe North. I
really like the way Doyle cuts sails, but in the past
there were durability issues with Doyle inappropriate
to a cruising boat.

Legos on board

Chuck and I are getting down to the niity-gritty now that we take
delivery of our boat in 6 months...Has anyone had experience with
legos on board (yes, the children's building toy)? we know they can
clog bilges on other boats but before we deny our boys one of their
favorite pastimes, we thought we'd check with other owners.

Also, any experiences with shipping "stuff" (equipment, tools,
personal items) to La Rochelle?

HI I have a 5 year old daughter who finds ways to drop almost
anything that is in her hands.

As long as they dont play in the engine room there is no way to clog
the bildge pump. The cockpit scuppers are so big that most legos will
be washed overboard. I would worry more about the woodwork and
apolstery. Wich cleans up nicely.

Just back from a passage from Tortola to Grenada on a new Doyle
jenny. Very competitively priced, it replaced my delaminated original
sail. A very good sail indeed! Doyle, in the Caribbean is a
pleasure to deal with.

As to logos as someone else stated, don't let the kids play in the
engine compartment. But I'd like to know if on the newer SM's the
cushions are still velcroed into place: a terrible situation in the
dining area. Any suggestions for an improvement. Also, after almost
eight years when the only maintenance on my watermaker, even after
absences of as long as 6 months, was a weekly rinse (with no ill
effects)the person watching my boat pickled the membranes. He
states I should run 1/2 hr with the tap in the galley open before
using the water. It would seem to me rinsing for some length of time
would be sufficient. Comments please.

years, with nothing but first class service.

I shipped over a large crate of equipment when having Pagan built.
Also no problem. Just ship as Amel tells you to.

About that stainless steel anchor (assuming it's the same one I got 8
years ago): I couldn't get it to hold in La Coruna. The first time I
used it in the Caribbean it dragged. The second time it hung up on a
rock and bent. Obviously I knew what to do with it. Friends who
know the anchor universally refer to it as "The Slippery Anchor."

To those of you in the Caribbean predictions are for 5 large
hurricanes this year (as if you didn't know already). Yes, Grenada is
a good place to leave your boat--much better than the hard.)

It's interesting about the anchor. I have had problems
with it dragging, but not more than one would expect
with a CQR. Generally I would say "satisfactory".
However, the shank bent in strong/shifting winds and
that was a surprise; I wouldn't have expected it.

yet to find any fault in your advice... so far you
have been able to overwhelm my ill thought out
suggestions as to how to change an almost perfect
boat.... but you can't fault us for trying to make it

Shearwater is a 1984 Maramu, and we're undergoing
a huge refit, one
very small part of which was replacing the
companionway vertical
sliding door. The problem we've encountered is
the deterioration of
the rubber gasket which goes along the bottom of
the door sill, so
water running down the outside of the door goes
aft over the sill
into the cockpit, rather than into the door's
"pocket" and thence
eventually into the bilge. Any idea of where to
get the same or
similar gasket, short of trying to deal directly
with Amel? Our
prior efforts with them have been frustrating due
to the language
barrier, as well as contending with US Customs.

Dear All,

I am right now in Italy in the wonderfull island of Ponza but I am
facing serious problem with my new super Maramu Alma LIbre. I am
continuing loosing the throtle controll so practically when I start
the Yanmar engine I am not sure that I can increase the revolutions
of the engine due to a mysterious problem. Amel changed my new
gearbox with their excellent after sale team in Ajaccio but after
sailing in Bonifacio and Sardinia the problem continues. We have
checked the Morse cabling and could not find any problem any idea
anybody.

Thanks for the reply. We have increased the rpm from the engine and it
works fine . We have dismanteled the Morse and checked the cables and
found no fault. The problem is that the problem we are facing is not
systematic. It happens some times and ofcource according to the Murphy;s
law the wosrst moments when anchoring or mooring. What can be a problem
with the cable that sometimes work and sometimes no we are desperate.

main sheet traveler winch

Hello, les Amels...I sail Maramu #258, built in 1989. The winch for
the main sheet traveler is under the dodger on the starboard side.
The line always jams up in this winch when I try to move the traveler.

I have tightened the line leading into the winch, but it still
stretches and jams. Soon, I will replace the line with a low stretch
line. Currently, I cannot adjust the traveler with any force on the
main sheet.

My questions are these: Has anyone replaced this winch with a better
design, perhaps supplied by Amel, that does not jam or pinch the line?
Does this problem persist on the Super Maramu? Has anyone solved
this problem?

Joel Potter, any suggestions? Merci a tout.

If you have any growth on the folding prop or if it
doesn't deploy completely every time you will not be
able to get RPM up. Have you assured yourself the prop
deploys correctly?

My understanding is that sheet travelers, be they for the main or the
headsail, are not supposed to be adjusted while there is pressure on
the sheet. You are expected to release the tension on the sheet

Mr. Lambertsen,

Use, age, and exposure to the elements gradually lessens the "grip" the line
for the main sheet traveler can provide. New "Fuzzy" line will do wonders.
In any case, you must unload the main sheet to move the traveler in anything
more than a light breeze. The traveler winch on the Super Maramu is
marginally stronger but not much.

To improve the performance, one client put two self tailing winches, one at
port and starboard, to crank the traveler up and down. He admitted later
that it was a waste of money.

Replace the line and I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised.

tHANKS FOR THE ADVISE. IT SEEMS THAT THE PROBLEMS IS FROM THE ENGINE.
THERE WERE AIR BUBLES IN THE SYSTEMS AND THE TECHNICIAN IN ISCHIA TRIED
TO REDUCE IT BY CHANGING THE FILTER AND TIGHTENING OF THE SCREWS.
PERHAPS IS ALSO A YANMAR PROBLEM . EVERY TIME WE ENTER A HARBOR WE PRAY
THAT THE ENGINE WILL WORK AS SUPPOSED TO BE.

advice on Spain/Portugal ?

Hello All

We hopefully will soon be owners of a 1999 Super Maramu currently lying in La Rochelle. Assuming closing goes as planned in July, we plan to start moving her southward in August towards the Canaries and cross over to the Caribbean in November. Does anyone have any personal knowledge of good cruising areas in the Bay of Biscay, north coast Spain, or Portugal ? Are the Imray Lorrie cruising guides pretty good ? We may need to leave her for a month or so, can anyone recommend a reasonably economical and safe harbor/marina in Portugal ?
