Re: Lofrans Tigres Windlass gipsy
The cause is that the chain builds up like a volcano then falls on itself, making it difficult to exit via the motor. Normally this volcano building is mitigated by the vertical wall in the middle of the chain locker. The ratcheting is caused by the built-in ratchet mechanism which is needed to operate the windlass manually. There is a longer version of this explanation, but it is boring.😀 Bill

This is somewhat related. I find that sometimes when I try to drop my anchor the windlass will not turn and just makes a clicking sound ,I have to pull down on the chain to get it working .What causes that ?
Thanks,

After wiping off much of the excess grease, the proper functioning was restored. The anchor would haul up without slipping, but the gypsy would slip as intended if the pull weight became too strong. If you research this topic on sailing sites, you’ll find some support for these devices but much more for solar panels.
If you have a shaft generator on your main engine, this unit is much more effficient.
But... it is your decision :-)
Kind regards,

Right now, I am in Panama City and unable to get to Croatia in the next four weeks. I am hoping there be an Amel owner in Split or the surrounding area who might be able to take a look at her for me. I would be more than willing to pay an hourly rate for the time taken and cover any and all travel expenses. Also if anybody knows a respected marine surveyor in Croatia (perhaps Split) please do let me know. Bestest Regards

Re: Mastervolt Batery Monitor
Servus Ulrich Our XANTREX Akku Monitor on WASABI A54#55 does have 20 settings (Parameters). I played around with it last year and found out it is more a monitoring and alarming systems. So the settings are for example to set low/high voltage threshold, etc. The manual says that there are parameters which should be kept as default, and some important one can/should be adapted. I’m back on WASABI by mid of March and can send you the settings which I have on our AMEL-54. We can even talk on whatsup or Skype if you like. But our´s square housing shaped Xantrex is in the product data sheet only as "Xantrex Akku Monitor" named. No "Link , Link Pro, Link Lite" or so. I found in the Web the same manual as we have obviously on board, but the listing of values to adjust is little different as Wolfgang mentioned, regarding his LinkLite. May be I can match these settings over on ours? It´s a Monitor, not a charging management, mhm? If there is anybody in the Group who’s is familiar with same type of monitor, he is able to sent me the correct adjustments (24V), very much appreciated. THX for help. Best wishes and stay safe. Thanks, Craig,
You're right. The guy who wants the seals said in his email that " A standard rotary oil seal with one lip will do as well "
I guess he's a belt and braces guy.

I was about to comment about your mechanic (unnecessarily) wanting to use double lip seals but then got to your last sentence where you said the originals were (appropriately) single lips. Doubles are really not called for (not that they will hurt anything). The 2nd lip does not perform any sealing function whatsoever - it is simply there to keep dirt and contaminants away from the 1st lip, which does all the work. They are appropriate in really dusty and dirty environments like, say, farm equipment. Definitely unnecessary overkill on our boats. They are only useful to allow the mechanic to charge more. I thought already about modifying the settee as you described (reclining the back and footrests). Have you some details or photos of your modification. On Red Lion there were already drawers under each steps of the companionway when we bought it, great storage! regards, Eloi Red Lion SM2K 426

Source of double lipped seals in the EU
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
A good Austrian run yacht services business in Greece is having difficulty sourcing double lipped seals for two Supermaramu genoa gearboxes ( not ours ). They normally import them from an SKF agency in Scotland.
Brexit has caught the Greek customs unawares , with massive delays and confusion in Athens.
Can anyone recommend a source for double lip seals in the EU ?
The original seals are single lipped, but these guys prefer the double lipped seals.

Re: Mango Refit?
Arlo
I have Mango number 46 from 1985. The Mango is a great boat and IMHO (I know this will be controversial) the best design that Henry came up with. Yes, they are older boats but if they have been maintained consistently and well and not extensively modified they are great cruising boats. I have lived aboard mine now for 3 + years and she was and still is in pristine condition and has been a great boat. (ok the hull needs to be painted)
So having said that, Yes a Mango in great shape is a solid boat. However any boat that has been neglected should be avoided. Hire a good surveyor that knows these boats, and go into it with your eyes open and with as much of that particular boats problems identified. Any 53 foot boat can be a money pit during a refit and repair. An easy way to rule out a potential boat (before hiring a surveyor) is look at the wiring, bilges and the engine room. If they are not in near perfect order, I would avoid looking any further into any vessel that fails that initial sniff test. Just my 2 cents from a Mango owner. - Arlo 1985 Mango Hull # 46
