Hallo Kent,
I thought already about modifying the settee as you described (reclining the back and footrests). Have you some details or photos of your modification. On Red Lion there were already drawers under each steps of the companionway when we bought it, great storage! regards, Eloi Red Lion SM2K 426

Source of double lipped seals in the EU
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
A good Austrian run yacht services business in Greece is having difficulty sourcing double lipped seals for two Supermaramu genoa gearboxes ( not ours ). They normally import them from an SKF agency in Scotland.
Brexit has caught the Greek customs unawares , with massive delays and confusion in Athens.
Can anyone recommend a source for double lip seals in the EU ?
The original seals are single lipped, but these guys prefer the double lipped seals.

Re: Mango Refit?
Arlo
I have Mango number 46 from 1985. The Mango is a great boat and IMHO (I know this will be controversial) the best design that Henry came up with. Yes, they are older boats but if they have been maintained consistently and well and not extensively modified they are great cruising boats. I have lived aboard mine now for 3 + years and she was and still is in pristine condition and has been a great boat. (ok the hull needs to be painted)
So having said that, Yes a Mango in great shape is a solid boat. However any boat that has been neglected should be avoided. Hire a good surveyor that knows these boats, and go into it with your eyes open and with as much of that particular boats problems identified. Any 53 foot boat can be a money pit during a refit and repair. An easy way to rule out a potential boat (before hiring a surveyor) is look at the wiring, bilges and the engine room. If they are not in near perfect order, I would avoid looking any further into any vessel that fails that initial sniff test. Just my 2 cents from a Mango owner. - Arlo 1985 Mango Hull # 46

Mango Refit?
Carles Dolz
Hello to all!
We are a couple looking for a sailboat to live aboard within some years and perhaps crosse some oceans. Obviously, we have on the radar the Amels, perhaps a Santorin (the SM are a bit of of ou budget). Some days ago I found an old Mango for sale near home from 1980, and we visit it. The boat is in a better condition than we expected, the wood inside is in good condition, no leaks from the port-holes, some glued carpet in the floors, upholstery old fashioned but in good condition. The deck seems had be painted, the hard dogger is ok... One owner. Seems as if this boat have with the same equipment from factory: engine is a Perkins, no genset. Old bow thruster type. No furling genoa or main sail, agged electronics... During visit the broker tell us that don't know the boat's history, and nothing about the maintenance, engine condition...(he don't found the engine keys) The boat have osmosis, I don't know how serious it is. Perhaps I can have a very good discount on his low asking price. Apart of the osmosis treatment, engine rebuild, and other specialized works, I can make many of the jobs myself. So, I my main doubt now is if its a good idea to do the refit of this boat or to leave pass and go for a smaller Santorin around 100k €. One of my concern is that I like the easy management of sails on the newest Amels (Santorin) with his furling sails with electric engines, and I don't want to have to go to the mast to control halyards, reefs,.. What do you thing: the Mango is a model that deserve such refit? The furling main sail is a must? Things that I should check before buy? Best regards

Re: Super Maramu interior upgrades
We modified the settee so that the back can recline a little, and added pullout footrests. It is much more comfortable to sit in than before. We are adding a mini projection TV above the settee and a pull down screen for watching movies. The screen will be removed while sailing and stored wrapped in a blanket with the emergency tiller.
Also added a tool storage area in forward hanging locker and drawer under bottom step of companionway ladder. When all is finished I'll post pics. -- Kent & Iris KRISTY

Dear Daniel, If you are considering buying Mango, I would ask one of the volunteers to take a look at it. However, before you sign a contract I would ask Olivier to fly there to survey the boat. There is no one that knows more about Amel’s than he does. Whatever the cost it would be worth it as there could be something wrong with the boat that an owner might not see and cost you a fortune to fix. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Re: C drive drain bolt
Hi Bill,
Understood, thanks for clarifying. My use of the word "tight" was related to the bolt not being "loose" and therefore able to move around. When I did this job in 2019, I bought a number of different standard-sized bonded washers to try and get a "not-loose" position of the V-bolt which also lined up with the line-cutter. I was unable to achieve that goal. The use of mastic as a sealant/fixing compound is required to ensure the bolt remains "not-loose". This was another one of those classic boat projects which should take a couple of hours to complete, but extends to days waiting for washers to arrive by mail! Cheers, Dean SV Stella A54-154

Hi;
Our Amel is currently wintered in Montenegro. We are not on board and will not be there for at least another month or two. We did have to hire a surveyor due to insurance requirements last year, even though we could not travel due to COVID. The surveyor turned out to be very professional and responsive. He is not an Amel expert, but could potentially provide some useful feedback. If you wish, I could reach out to him and see if a pre-purchase visit would be possible and what would be the costs, or put you in direct contact. Let me know which you prefer.
Happy Sailing;

Hello Guys
I'm currently hoping to purchase an Amel Mango in Split, Croatia. Right now, I am in Panama City and unable to get to Croatia in the next four weeks. I am hoping there be an Amel owner in Split or the surrounding area who might be able to take a look at her for me. I would be more than willing to pay an hourly rate for the time taken and cover any and all travel expenses. Also if anybody knows a respected marine surveyor in Croatia (perhaps Split) please do let me know. (I deleted the other message about this) Bestest Regards

Good morning Dave, Thanks for the compliments! I was going to mention the key on the shaft, but it has already be mentionned by several people. I bet this is where your problem comes from! Sincerely, Alexandre (and glad the illustrations are useful)

Last season I found that my gipsy slipped despite tightening the wing nut down as tight as I could (used a few taps from a hammer at one point). The question I have is whether my gipsy is simply worn out and needs replacement or will the maintenance routine restore it to full functionality?
