Good morning Dave, Thanks for the compliments! I was going to mention the key on the shaft, but it has already be mentionned by several people. I bet this is where your problem comes from! Sincerely, Alexandre (and glad the illustrations are useful)

Re: C drive drain bolt
Thank you Bill!
You are correct as always, but the washer in the bottom of the hole needs to be compressed i bit I assume? in that case some tightness is needed. Paul on SY Kerpa SM#259

Re: Lofrans Tigres Windlass gipsy

HI David The key is the second line of defence for the gearbox of the anchor winch. The first is the cone clutch which slips if the winch is overloaded. If it is tightened too much and the operator is brutal the key will eventually fail and sheer off. This is the last line of defence for the gears. Anchor raising should be done in a manner that is sensitive to these facts. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Re: C drive drain bolt
Bill Kinney
It is important to understand that the O-ring seal on the drain plug does not work by being "tight." It works just by rubbing up against the outside of the hole that it fits in, and that fit does not not tighter by cranking harder on the nut.
O-rings seals--of any kind--rarely work better by making them "tighter". If they leak, it is usually because of scratches or other damage to the sealing face. In almost all cases, squeezing harder does not fix the problem. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Charleston, SC, USA

Re: Lofrans Tigres Windlass gipsy
I would order a new inner cone and the service kit. If your keyway looks like the one in Bills photo you will have a difficult time getting it off the shaft.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
The service kit has new screws for the access plate to be able to remove the shaft. These should be replaced as the old ones can be challenging to remove.

Re: Lofrans Tigres Windlass gipsy
The worst case, a machine shop can cut a new key slot 180 degrees from the current slot and you can get a new key. Likewise, a machine shop can enlarge keyways and make a key to size. GREASE THE CONES.😀 If anyone does not believe the cone should be greased, read this from your Lofrans Manual: Bill
Thanks, guys. Yeah, I looked at that photo in your book, Bill. I should probably pull the gipsy off next time I'm on the boat just to see if I need to order some parts. I guess I can see where if the key is distorted I may not be able to fully tighten the gipsy.

You may have a problem with the key way on the inner cone. Mine was a bit twisted. If is damaged it may not engage the cone. I replaced the shaft, inner cone, all seals, oil, keyways, All parts are available.

Re: Amel 55 fuel tank guage accuracy

And to finish this out. We measured about 60g in the tank when we emptied it today at an indicated 1/4 which is correct. I added 168g today and the gauge shows full correctly with 228g of fuel which is pretty full. I must have made a mistake before...

Re: C drive drain bolt
Paul, I could not get my bolt to align correctly and also be tight. I tried different washers etc. In the end I consulted the Forum and the common wisdom is to use mastic to seal the bolt in the correct position.

I recently purchased them through an Amazon site, Wateranywhere, and they arrived quickly and were very affordably priced. As Bill R says, they are Dow Filmtec, so I am not sure how they would suffer from a quality issue that wouldn’t affect all sellers. Mine were for the Duo 100, which uses the Sw30-2521.

Hi Dave, The gypsy sits on a cone. If it encounters too much resistance it is designed to slip. You might check to see if the chain in the locker is jumbled and kicked. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Thank you everybody,
I meant the horizontal part but it is good to know that talcum helps on the rubber seal. I have anyway to re-varnish the wooden parts. Afterwords i will try the sliding tape regards Eloi SM2K 426

Hello Scott,
You can find the brushes for 56 euros. https://www.nautiboutique.fr/produit/charbons-pour-moteur-de-pilote-type-2-raymarine-n034/ They sell many spares for Raymarine. i have ordered several times in their webshop without problem. they are very helpfull. Ask them before ordering if it’s ok for your pilote engine. Dominique

Re: Amel 55 fuel tank guage accuracy
I have the tank cleaned and polished today. We pulled about 60 gallons out which matches the 1/4 level on the gauge. We're still unsure though as last time we were at 1/4, we added 106 gallons to what we thought was full and the gauge showed full but based on today that would only put 166g in the tank and capacity is 230 so maybe slow down fill and keep filling...
Also, we found when we removed the inspection hatch under the captain bunk, there was diesel in the center of the rubber gasket. The gasket is a full circle on my boat, not a ring so the fuel got up there somehow and pooled in the center of the gasket. I didn't find any fuel on the bunk itself happily but something that wouldn't happen with a ring gasket for example maybe. We ended up using a little sealant on the bolts and tightened it a little more, the bolts didn't seem very tight when we removed the inspection cover.

I have been sanding, cleaning this door for months after the 2nd Captain put some teak stain on to make it look pretty. Building my muscles lifting it up and pushing it down.
