Does my ONAN need a new 12V charger?
Alex Ramseyer <alexramseyer@...>
When the generator runs, I see 13,6V on the starter battery. When I turn the ignition key of the engine in the cockpit the current goes down to 13,2V (maybe because of the ventilator in engine room / generator is still running). When I start the main engine the current goes to 14,4V. After
servicing the ONAN and replacing the starter battery a short while ago, everything worked find
for a while, but this morning the ONAN only started AFTER I started the main
engine. The starter battery showed 12, 4 V initially. It showed 13,2 after I
run the genset for 2h and then 12,8 anoher 2h later. All observations come from the little display in the cockpit. So what is the conclusion of you fellow Amelians from this observations? Thanks,
Alex SY NO

Re: Where is the chaincounter sensor on my AMEL 54?
Under the gipsy is a little magnet 4-5 mm , sealed by silicone. This was rusty and destroyed on our boat. As we had no replacement on board , I changed the gipsy from the second windlass to the first . Ordered 4 new magnets . You can test the counter if you remove the gipsy and test the sensor with a normal magnet. Wolfgang Weber SY Elise Amel 54 # 162

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Replacing Sonic Speed Log

Hi,
I have been having problems with the B&G sonic speed log for a while now. I've tried replacing the board (where the transducers connect to), and checked the resistance on the transducers which seem ok, all to no avail. I'm told I should probably replace the transducers but this seems like a difficult and expensive job and may not even be the cause. Any advice? Cheers, Paul Ya Fohi - Amel 54 #98

No. Hardly an expert. The crossing is different every time. Hence the request from the field of experts. Re Parker. Certainly a guru. I do get his spot forecasts, as already spending the 500 on predict wind which is really quite amazing.

Hello Duane,

I “had” the Calpeda B CM 20E pump on the boat (now under water). But I still have many parts for the whole air conditioning system: calpeda rebuilt kit, capacitors, etc. Here is the inventory of the Parts for Sale (but it is incomplete): http://www.nikimat.com/parts_for_sale/index.html Here is originally the link for the spare parts (also incomplete): http://www.nikimat.com/spare_parts.html The next few days, I must focus on getting all the documents to my insurance. But I hope to be able to resume the parts for sale mid week. Sincerely, Alexandre --------------------------------------------

Hi Alan, I've just seen your picture on the FB page and would like to thank you for sharing your experience at fitting the Airmar CS4500 Ultrasonic speed transducer in the depth sounder location while adding a through hull depth sounder and then connect all the stuff to the B&G Hydra 2000… Well done and congratulations ;-) Would you mind to share your detailed process, precise references and perhaps some additional technical pictures in order to prepare a "how -to" available for everyone and make them able to thank you instead of bothering as I'm currently doing ;-) Thanks again Fred S/V ScentStone SM2K #375

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Replacing Sonic Speed Log
Strangely our original Amel fitted B&G sonic speed unit worked perfectly till our boat became marina bound for 5 years, with just occasional weekend short sails. Now that the boat is used daily again cruising, the B&G sonic works perfectly and accurately again for more than 4500 n.m.! We intended to replace it but now no need. Very odd how it fixed itself once the boat was in frequent use again! Colin Streeter SV Island Pearl II Amel53 #332 Anchored outside Telago Marina Langkawi. Malaysia. Re: Yanmar 100HP Fuel Pump maintenance-free?
greatketch@...
The number that several experienced mechanics have given me is that a well cared for (key words, there) marine diesel will get to the point it needs an over haul between 6 and 12 thousand hours. That's a HUGE range, and that is not too surprising since it is a very "fuzzy", yes even philosophical, kind of answer. An overhaul really is a performance based criteria, not something that has an expiration date.
Our 21 year old Volvo has 7,500 hours on it, and runs like a top. Putting out power at the same rate as it always has based on boat speed and rpm at full throttle. Based on the criteria above, it might run without a full overhaul for another 15 years... or it might need one in 5... An injection pump is a VERY fussy piece of equipment. There is a reason that they have "tamper-proof" seals on so many of the adjustments. Overhauling one is a job for true specialists, not the average diesel mechanical shop. Clearances and settings are extremely small, and the test equipment needed to be sure it is running well is very expensive. On the positive side, they can run a very, very long time without a problem, and they are very rarely the cause of problems. In general, if the engine is coming apart anyway, you can send the injection pump (and injectors) out for testing. If they test well, an overhaul is not needed. ---In amelyachtowners@..., <svperegrinus@...> wrote : Hello Bill and Craig, Yes, the question is about the fuel injection pump. On the Yanmar, it is a ZEXEL NP - VE - 4 / 12 F 1900 R NP1995. Craig, interesting that you had the pump rebuilt at 4,000 hrs... we are not there yet, and at our current average, will reach 4,000 hrs in about 2 years. Just like you had the pump rebuilt at engine overhaul time, the Yanmar manual seems to implicate that the pump is to be overhauled at the same time as the engine itself... ... so along these lines... is 4,000 hrs perhaps the horizon for an engine overhaul on an Amel... ??? Yeah, kind of a philosophical question! Best, Peregrinus SM2K N. 350 (2002)
