Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Batteries
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Paul, Do you have a smart regulator on your engine mounted 24VDC alternator which will adjust for AGM and/or lithium and will your battery chargers adjust for AGM and/or lithium? If the answer is no, you should reconsider. In my experience with 4 sets of batteries in SM387 and 20+ clients of Amel School, I am not aware of has a single case where it was a good investment to buy anything but an ordinary deep cycle battery, which will last 2 to 3.5 years. Also, I am aware of an installation of LiFePO4 in a 54 that lasted less than 2 years. I strongly believe that changing battery technology requires matching chargers and alternators to that technology. Of course there are those that will tell you don't worry about it, but they won't be around when you have a failure. I know everyone has strong opinions on batteries and anchors, but I thought I would give you mine, for what it is worth. You can buy deep cycle G31 DEKA batteries for $150-200 each. Hi Kent and Iris,
Check the December issue of the SSCA's Commodores Bulletin - they have about 50 contacts listed. Also, you may want to reach out Joan Conover on Growl Tiger who is likely very knowledgeable. Does anyone know of specific needs or contacts in the islands that might be able to focus our efforts more precisely? Is anyone else going to do any relief volunteering? Tom, If you need rigging, it does not have to be ordered from France. Gaetan has everything needed to replace your rigging with genuine Acmo fittings. He just uses his own wire. They rerigged Kimberlite in 2 ½ days last month. He is very busy. An appointment would be good. He seems to be doing 4 boat at a time nonstop. Not only Amels. They even polished the chainplates before installing the toggles. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Tom,
The Amel Caraibes group (led by Jean Collin) have an office and workshop in the middle of the marina complex in Le Marin. There is an " Amel dock" (Dock 4) which is the one where you will find most, but not all of the Amel boats. They are long and short term transients, permanent residents, and boats for sale. Other Amels can be found on the other docks and at moorings or at anchorage and at nearby St. Anne. Dock 4 is not exclusively Amel, but also serves a large charter service for catamarans.
At a nearby dock Caraibe Greement is run by Gaetan Rivet, a very experienced rigger who replaced my standing rigging last year with stainless steel rigging I had ordered from ACMO and had shipped to Amel Caraibes.
Also nearby are many other yacht services that are Amel-friendly. For example, Patrick Fougerouse of Caraibe Refrigeration SARL will be replacing my aft cabin Climma airconditioning in January when I am there.
Hope to see you in Martinique, if not before. Brava is still on the hard in Bailey's Boatyard, Falmouth Harbour until the first week in January.

I am unfamiliar with the layout there. Reading everyone’s messages, I almost have the sense there is a marina right at the Amel facility. Could someone give me a lay or the land (or water)? Hi Paul, You should check very carefully into the reputation of Smart Battery. Sailing friends of mine paid thousands of dollars for batteries from Smart Battery and did not receive any product nor any refund. Companionway Removal, another method.
greatketch@...
I haven't found this method of removing the companionway discussed here, if I have missed it in searching, my apologies for being redundant... When we got our boat, the teak in the cockpit had been finished with Cetol, a product with a look that is... how to say..."not to my taste." The vertical sliding door also needed new veneer. A major refinishing project was called for. To do this we needed good access to the door, which is not a trivial project on a Super Maramu. I am aware of three techniques to do this. First method was lifting the door as high as possible, and refinishing only what is then exposed. We dismissed this as unworthy of our yacht. Second, was unbolting the dodger and raising it enough to lift the door out of its track. This would give us full access to the door, but seemed an awful lot of work and would create the potential for leaks where we didn’t have any. Last, and in my mind best, is to use a fine kerf saw to remove the inside rail of the starboard side track, cutting vertically, athwartship, followed by a cross cut right at the top of the companionway ladder. This allows the door to be removed without other modification making reveneering and refinishing an easy workbench project. I used a fine blade on my Fein multitool to do the cutting. Some kinds of hand saw would also do a very nice job. The rail was reattached with four countersunk screws, and nylon washers were added under the rail to make up for the wood removed by the saw kerf. If you don’t do this the track can become too narrow to fit the door well. This approach has the advantage that the door can be easily removed anytime in the future by removing the screws. The gap resulting from the saw kerf is virtually invisible when reassembled. If you don’t want to see the screwheads you can put teak plugs in at the cost of making future removal a bit more work. If you wanted to be REALLY fussy you could replace the wood lost to the kerf by a glueing on a couple thicknesses of teak veneer to replace it. I’d love to claim that this method of removing the companionway slide was the result of my own natural brilliance and clever insight, but the idea actually came from Joel Potter. Batteries
We need new batteries in our SM, the last (sealed) batteries lasted less than 2 ½ year (No we never run them below 70% and often charge them close to 100% most days as we have 850 w of solar power so they have not been miss treated). I’m thinking on the FireFly OASIS AGM batteries, if half what the producer says is true they should be an excellent choice. They are rather expensive 486 $ plus tax and freight for a group 31 typ. Has anyone any experience with them? Another option is LiFePO4 batteries I found from Smart Battery 100 Ah group 31 for 1300 $ 4 of them would give more usable capacity at a cost of 5200 $ compare with 3900 $. The Smart Battery come with 5 year’s replacement warranty and a pro rata life time warranty. They claim you can use your standard chargers, so no other investment needed. But I assume with the strong focus on electric cars the development of batteries will be huge the coming years, so maybe better to wait to install LiFePO4 batteries until next time.
