Apologies for the late response - we were doing the Chesapeake-Caribbean passage. Now here in Marigot Bay with two other 54s! It was getting a bit too cold on the US East Coast!

 

I can explain what was done conceptually but 220v frightens me, so I had the electrician do the actual wiring.

 

The Amel transfer switch is bypassed completely. The wires from the shore power plug go into AC2 while the wires from the genset go to AC1. Victron specifically states that you should have your genset have priority if both power sources exist. I’m not really sure why, but given that I see no harm in their way of doing it and moreover, I will be playing with the Quattro’s programmable relays, I abided by their recommendation. 

From Quattro Manual: "In a Quattro the AC1 input has always priority over the AC2 input. A common practice is that a generator is connected to AC1 and shore power to AC2. As long as 

the generator is running the Quattro’s will use the generator. "

 

On the output side, there are two  AC-Out outputs which go to the main panel switches. Sorry I am not sure how this is physically wired, just speaking conceptually here.These outputs are fed from either mains/genset power OR uninterrupted power (aka mains/genset/inverter). I have all but one item fed by AC-OUT-1, which is uninterrupted - runs on either shore/genset or inverter. Yes, the water heater, scuba compressor, aircon, washer/dryer, etc. are run from the inverter. 

 

There’s AC-OUT-2 output, which is ONLY fed from shorepower/genset power and the only thing I have connected to that is my Skylla 80amp charger. This output is on, I believe, a 2 minute delay from when shore/genset power is detected.

New VHF antenna = newly discovered electrical leak!

I’ve had VHF reception and transmission problems and recently replaced my original VHF antenna with a Shakespeare 5215. The male connector threads fit perfectly where the old antenna sat on the masthead, obviating the need for drilling new holes for a mounting bracket. In addition to replacing the antenna, I replaced the outrageously thin RG-58U original coax to lower loss RG8X. There are even thicker and even lower loss cables out there but the thicker cables have minimum bend radii that I’d violate given the routing through the mast so RG8X was my compromise.

 

I’m not sure if it was the cable or antenna, but my VHF problems were solved and I can now hear and be heard from a much greater distance than before!

 

However a new issue came up. Because of the way the male connector threads contact the mast, the coax shield effectively connects the mast/rigging to the VHF head unit and the head unit grounding wire then connects it to the bonding system. With this connection made, the Mass- light lit up, indicating an electrical leak! If I disconnected the grounding wire from the VHF head unit body, the mass- goes away. 

 

It turns out I had an electrical leak going through my rigging for a while now. The evidence was there - rust spots all over the rigging/liferails and some higher than expected (sacrificial?) corrosion on aluminum parts. Per Olivier, it turns out Amel started connecting the mast/rigging to the bonding system around 2009 for this exact reason - an undetected electrical leak in the rigging with boats that don’t get washed often could lead to electrolytic corrosion.

I would suggest those of you with pre-2009 Amels test for either negative or positive charge through your rigging. If you have a mass tester light and are pre-2009, it will NOT light up unless you make a connection between your rigging and green/yellow bonding system wires. I would think a simple way to make that connection is a temporary jumper wire between the rigging and say the green/yellow wire at your diesel fill-up.

 

I isolated the leak to my starboard Lewmar V4 windlass motor. It’s the primary one, so I presume age has resulted in carbon brush dust buildup. I assume cleaning it simply involves taking it apart and blowing/wiping away excess carbon dust? Any tips or warnings before I dig into it?

Dear Ruedi,

no, I do not got all compartments open, not even tried it - assumed there would be more damage then benefits over all.

I used YACHTICON PURATANK (it was available in La Rochelle) and a waterhose with a lot of pressure to clean the compartements as far as possible.
The result was quite well. No problems so far.

When we not use the water maker (what we mostly do), I do it like Arnold, using AquaClean (Yachticon).

Our B&G wind speed meter only goes to 50 knots. I'd be interested to know what meter there is that goes to 70 knots or more as folk are saying.
However, heaving to :
Elyse has an inner forestay, so we heave to with the staysail and the mizzen (jib and jigger). They balance each other well and provide an easy controllable way to heave to.
Sailing to windward, we just tack and don't touch the sheets, then find the rudder angle that keeps us forereaching and tie off the wheel to the stainless thingy that's next to the companion way ...it's for the companion way lock down, burglar proof system (which we have never used).
We have done this successfully a number of times when the wind and sea was just getting too much...eg from NZ to Tahiti we were hit by a fast moving depression which made BIG seas and winds 50+, we hove to over night, had a meal, hot shower and a good sleep. In the am the breeze was down to a much more reasonable 40 knots so we loosened the helm, the breeze blew us around and out of the hove to position, and off we went again...under staysail and mizzen until the breeze came down enough to unfurl the main. 
We have a Shark drogue in the lazarette set up to go, but have never had the need to use it, apart from testing it out...but then we seem to spend a lot of time sailing upwind in weather, not downwind. Such is life in the south of the South Pacific.

I am using Yachticon Aqua Clean since 20 years! Never had any problem!! Once I also stay in winter in Sicily and there is no freezing problem, put it inside,fill the tank, be happy😎

You can use Hydrogen Peroxide. It converts to water over a short time.

I also have about 6 small (2mm dia) holes that are right through one of our baby poles. All these are within about 50cm, but are not located in the vicinity of the pole attachments. It looks like these have occurred with the baby pole resting in the same position for an extended period of time. Will look at rotating and flushing with fresh water in future.

May have to replace pole next winter in Turkey.

Hi Ruedi
There is no need to clean the water tank if you keep it filled if you leave the boat for the winter.
The water will not go bad for such a short time, and keeping it filled makes it more or less impossible for algaes to grove.

We bought our SM 2006 and have only kleened the tank once, and that was when just had bought the boat since the previous owner had left the boat with half empty tanks.

Kirstin just completed our new bimini- she kept the frame bars the same length but moved the forward bar 4 inches higher in the channel. The result is a zip down window (40 gauge stratoglass) above the dodger that allows airflow to both sides of the cockpit, and great forward standing visibility. It's made of Sunbrella SeaMark, a two ply leakproof fabric.

I noticed that your poles are quite different to ours...not surprising SM007 cf SM437
Ours, as probably SM422 are quite a lot bigger in diamtre and the end fittings are quite different.
We had also this probleme with corrosion of the Al caste end. We managed to get it out and grind it down to fit the tube, cleaned out the tube end, coated it with lanocote before reassembling, and it has been fine ever since.

I have had an unfortunate mishap resulting in my starboard wind shield being neatly broken in two. So I am interested in getting a replacement, which Amel do not have. One possible complication is that the shields are slightly tinted, so would you know if your supplier would be able to do that? And if so, I would have no idea of how to gauge how much they are tinted. I guess if the price is not too much I could just replace both. Also, they seem to have a very slight curve, which may or may not be a factor. I guess I could check how much by removing it.

Hi All!

I just took part 1 of all her glass to get copied on a CNC at a local industrial plastic supply shop. Also dismantled one portlight apart and getting new lenses (polycarbonate) made and set of spares (3 new, 3 spares). Then attacking the hatches and salon windows tomorrow...

If anyone needs a new windshield / port or hatch glass and wants me to get additional pieces cut lmk - getting it done in Gardena, CA for wholesale prices.

Here is the windshield removed and galley porthole.

I broke one of my baby poles on Pacific passage and lost the end fitting overboard.  I used the other one as a model and had a copy made in NZ.  The pole itself is available at any good rigger.

My welder confirmed that the inner end sleeves are corroded and burst through the aluminum tube. I've contacted Maud to see if the ends are in stock or where they came from. Any sourcing suggestions would be appreciated, as the welder says he can't make a long term fix given the situation. If I can salvage the ends or source them, not sure where to source the tube...
