I need to replace the original port-side jib sheet winch gear box: it is a Bonfiglioli VF 63, MVF63/P unit. Can anyone suggest a replacement which will fit the existing electric motor which seems very sound. I am located in Australia at Greenwell Point on the NSW south coast. Flora was originally Amelie IV which some of you may remember..

Re: Tender Amel 54
Hi Bill,
To prove your point. I have never used the seat cover for our Highfield. I really have no use for it and would have preferred it if they took $20 off the price of the dinghy and kept it. I guess I have added to the cause J
We do like the Highfield dinghy.

Mark

Ian,
You touched on one of my favorite subjects, so I will comment in an "old-man rant" sort of reply.
It is very common today that manufacturers omit certain added features or components because the buyer rarely buys the product based on the addition or the quality of these added features or components. It is a fact of life in manufacturing and selling any product. Many manufacturers choose to not add cost when they know the buyer is not focussed on the benefit of the associated added cost of that feature or component during his buying decision. Things have changed since the days when manufacturers, like Amel, included many costly components in the purchase price. You and I are aware of the time when an Amel included 5 sails and more than one Amel owner never used either ballooner.
The good news is the seat cover can be used as an excellent pattern for someone to make one from Sunbrella...and Highfield has given us a full year to have a quality seat cover made! The same thing goes for the included dinghy cover. Highfield and 3D share the same not-so-good supplier of these components.
Of course, this is all caused by us, the buyer.
We almost never inquire about the quality of these added components and spend almost all of our time inquiring about other things like price. In fact, Highfield would likely lose sales if they increased the price of the dinghy to cover the additional cost of quality fabric. So, in this case, Highfield is doing exactly what "we" want.

Re: Engine oil alternatives
API classification of oils. Designation of oils for commercial vehicles with diesel engines. The classes in use at the moment for vehicles of different years are CH, CI, CJ and CK. The number 4 following the class designation signifies 4-stroke engine vehicles. Let's look at grade C oils in detail: CH-4. Introduced in 1998. Suitable for engines that use high quality gasoline with sulfur content up to 0.5% by weight. CI-4. Introduced in 2002. This type of engine oil provides reliable protection of the engine and exhaust system against soot deposits, and prevents premature wear of its components. Some lubricating materials of this class are designated CI-4 PLUS. CJ-4. They have excellent high temperature stability, resist oxidation and have a long service life. CK. Developed for the protection of engines manufactured in 2017. However, engine oils of this type can optionally be used on older engine models. Philippe Belloir +33 781 709 791

Re: Engine oil alternatives
Believe it or not, many brands of oil originate from the same refinery. Economies of scale require large quantities of a particular grade of oil to be run at one time. Many retailers send their oil containers to the same refinery when that refinery is running a particular type of oil. So pick a brand you like, but pay attention to the API standard. It must be marked on the container.

I believe the latest for diesel engines is either Cj or Ck. Here is a good reference:

Re: Engine oil alternatives
Hi Bryce,
I googled the manual for your engine and see that it calls for API Rating CD and 15W40 SAE Viscosity. That's actually an obsolete rating which may explain why you can't find it. Ratings are "backwards compatible" so any newer rating is fine. Current diesel engine ratings include CH, Ci and CJ. Stick with any brand name and you'll be fine. With Malaysia temperatures, you'd also be fine with just 30 weight oil, if the 15W40 isn't available. Smooth motoring to you, Craig -- SN68 Sangaris, Tropic Isle Harbor, FL
