We have just taken Nunky on her maiden voyage from Antibes to Almerimar over 5-6 weeks and we have loved the whole experience. The boat just feels so safe. Now that we have some experience of the boat I am hoping to be able to contribute to the group and the knowledge base.
One thing about the Western Med that I have noticed however is the amount of motoring you have to do. We have put 130 hours on the engine in just over 800 miles. Nunky currently has the original Perkins M80T fitted. The hour meter broke at some point so I have no idea how many hours it has done. The new meter read 10 when we bought her but I doubt that was fitted 10 hours before we the boat. Anyway we were considering a complete overhaul but a head gasket problem we had in Cartagena suggests that is the least we should do. Given that I have no idea how many hours the Perkins has done I am thinking about replacing it. I have read and reread all the previous posts about repowers and I am edging towards a Beta 75. I like the fact that the engine is simple, they seem to have an excellent reputation and they will also fit a bespoke charging solution. That appeals because when we fit lithium eventually I would like a high capacity 24v alternator fitting. I would really appreciate the group's current views on repowers that have been undertaken. Looks like you've found the problem, Billy. My understanding is that the Amel 55 initially did not have this DC to DC charger, with the engine alternator being the sole charging source for the starter battery. This resulted in the starter batteries going bad when boats weren't moving for long periods - the specs for the AGM say that the self discharge rate is 3% per month. So you also might have a sulfated starter battery because it has been deep discharged many times and never been charged to 100% by the engine. Good luck with fixing your issue! Cheers Joerg

I have done something very similar to what Gary posted, actually got the idea from Gary when I ran across him at Cape Charles, however, I bought two swim noodles and put it across the entire area. That way if I am at the helm, entering the companionway or moving the traveler my head is no worse for wear!

Hi Alexis,
If your pump is anything like the one on a A54 then the main weak-spot of this pump are the valves. These are flat flappy discs with one straight edge where it is clamped to the body. These things loose their shape and as a result becoming bad at closing off the hole the are supposed to close off. Replacing is the best thing to do but depending on the circumstances they will loose shape at some point again. Because of this I did add an additional bilge pump in the bilge using its own sensor that activates if the level gets about 15 cm above the level that triggers the primary pump. Hello Paul. The Amel 54 uses a vertical capstan Lewmar windlass with an integral chain counter as part of the system. It is entirely different than the Pouchon supplied counter on the Lofrans horizontal capstan windlass on the Super Maramu 53

I have an Amel53 with a Lofrans Tigres windlass. Don’t know if you have the same. On the Tigres the sensor is in the black tube housing attached to the Tigres (by Amel). You need to remove the cover (2 bolts) and then you can unscrew the tube housing and remove the old sensor. The new sensor will come with a long cable which you need to shorten. Disconnect the old ones and re-connect the new ones. Align the new sensor the same way as the old one was placed. I fixed the new sensor with some sika and two pieces of plastic form a tie wrap.
Again, this is on my 2001 SM2K with a Lofrans Tigres (which I btw upgraded with a new motor which is 1500W).

I spoke to Joel ,and Amel installed hard plastic inserts on a half dozen or so boats. They do not have the rounded gutter ,more square . I cannot guarantee that the new insert will fit those few boats , it may very well ,but you would need to determine that. There is a question that there may be a horizontal lip protruding out from the inboard side of the boat under the plastic insert, which boats with the normal insert do not have. I now have nine orders , orders will be taken til 9/5 ,the cut off date ,when the orders will be placed . This will probably be the last chance to participate in a group purchase of a new insert, so if you live in North America, this is a chance to get a new white insert and save approximately $1,600. on shipping and duty.
If outside of N.A. ,contact Maude at Amel , for an insert ,her price is as cheap as I can produce it for here. Thank You,

I emailed Stephane and got the following response back.
"Good Morning Billy, I am Ioera from POCHON PRO design office.
On AMEL55, the standard inverter DC/DC is a MAGIC 24/12-20 (MasterVolt). When this device works in chargins mode (3-step mode) the output charge current is 16A.
This explains the fuse value of 15A.

Hi Alex, the pump is not self priming so if the foot valve on the bottom of the suction pipe is not holding the water in column in the pipe the pump will act but not suck. If you grasp the suction pipe in the middle (having first detached any securing system) and pull it back and forth vigorously with he pump running you are likely to prime the pump and away you go. The movement up and down of the suction pipe acts like a pump forcing water up until the pump takes over. Obviously a replacement foot valve would be a longer term solution. Another thing that can cause the same effect as a leaking foot valve is a small leak in the suction pipe. Be sure all joints are well made and the pipe is in good order. Alex,
I have had this happen twice to the auto bilge pump when the hose drained whilst in the yard for an extended stay. The resolution was to allow the hose to fill with water from the fridges by temporarily closing the seacock. Once the pump was primed as such it worked fine. I do keep a spare rubber flap for the pump but have not needed to replace it yet.

Bilge pump

Hi all,
a bilge pump question on SM8 as our pump has been showing signs of weakness twice in one month. It keeps on pumping but nothing comes out. I've dismounted it but nothing looked wrong or obstructed. Then it worked again for 3 weeks, then failed again. I suspect an air leak, as the pump gasket looks a bit worn. Unfortunately, the safety manual pump doesn't work either. So, if I have to change this pump, my questions are : - do you recommend any upgrade or any model? (this one is a 25lt/min // A:4,5 // Rpm:25 // W90 // Serv. S2 // IP22 // I.CI.B// from 2012) - I've seen an interesting set-up in a Contest Yacht with 2 bilge pumps (in a row?), so that you still have an electric one on if the first one has problems. Have you install this kind of set-up? - about the manual safety pump, any idea what can be the problem? (i think it has quite never been used, and it may be dry and with an air leak as as well?) Was the Orion charger an upgrade? Check the battery. The start battery should not be discharged just because the start-battery-charger goes down. Unless there is a short somewhere.
1A. Replace the fuse with a 15amp fuse. 1. Check there is no short or leakage in the start circuit for the Genset. 2. Check there is no short or leakage in the start circuit for the Engine. 3. Try a different battery for the start circuit. 4. Check to see if there is a short in the key switch for the engine start. 5. If, nothing fixed the problem, there is probably something wrong within the Orion Charger. I don't believe that the start battery should be supplying current to anything with the engine off and the genset off. Even if your charger went dead for 10 engine starts, your battery should be able to handle it. Just my thoughts.. Hope you find the problem. Ken on Aquarius SM2K #262
