Steve:  Where on the pump was the smoke coming from.  Most likely it was the capacitor in the electrical box on the top of the pump (at least if it is a blue Calpeda pump).  Easily replaced for $15.  Anything more than that and a new pump might be in order.  March pumps have been used but one sized for that spot (as it services all three ACs is over $500 in a 220 VAC 50/60 hertz magnetic impeller variety.  I don't recall the gph (gallons per hour) rating of the Calpeda pump put I know it is listed on this website somewhere.  Try to match that if the easy and cheap start/run capacitor replacement doesn't work.

Hi all.  We moved on to SM #380 this week in Brunswick, GA and have been running the A/C a good bit very the past two days when I noticed early this morning that it had shut down. Initially I noticed the breaker behind the 220 panel had tripped, but after a reset, I switched on the salon AC and didn't hear the pump kick in and opened the engine room hatch to see the water Climma water pump smoking. As I am in the US and fairly stationary for the next month or so I am considering replacing the pump with a new unit rather than trying to troubleshoot and repair what I imagine is original and therefor nearly 15 years old. What are my options for a replacement pump and what must I consider?  Thank you all.

Right, but I bet the compressor turns on and off to regulate temperature...so maybe the start/run capacitor trips the breaker sometime after it warms up....

I have done this job on a Super Maramu, but not on a 54.

Try this and please let me know what yo find:
I think that there is a conduit between what you show in your photo "1.ACCESS+TO+WIRING" and the battery compartment.

Look closely at the inside of the storage cabinet door on the left above the battery bank. I think that the carpet covered panel inside that cabinet on the left side is removable...let me know.

I am certain that there is conduit that can bee seen on this side of the bulkhead that opens on the other side of the bulkhead shown in your photo "1.ACCESS+TO+WIRING."

What I believe you need to do is run the wire from the lazarette conduit shown in your photo "3.Inside+the+Lazarette" to the conduit shown in "1.ACCESS+TO+WIRING", then through another piece of conduit that passes through the bulkhead near the top, down to the battery box.

Again, let me know, I want to document this for all 54 owners.

Still working on that solar panels project.

Today was about planning the wiring between the lazarette and somewhere near the battery bank.

On our 54 there is a PVC tube that runs up from the lazarette to the back of a the book shelve located above the hanging cupboard at the chart table. It's used to run the BLU cabling, for instance the antenna coax. I was able to pull a line through it, happy.

Now, next to the chart table end of that tube, I can see another, smaller, empty tube. That looks like an ideal conduit for the cables. Except it does not exit anywhere, and the line puller blocks at what sounds like the bulkhead of the lazarette...

A few pictures to illustrate


Now the question:
Does anyone have a similar set up and know where this tube is supposed to end?

Anyone have a link to source the updated pump that replaces the original (Hull #195) water pump? I know I have seen something floating around. 


Or... Is there a source for the carbon brushes? 


I have been using a Jabsco for a few years now and have had no problems but it would be nice to resort back to original systems.

Alexandre,

 

The start capacitor starts the compressor as the unit cycles during normal usage. These are common causes of failure in marine AC units. It is possible that you had some low voltage or fluctuation in the marina and the capacitor failed.

I found out the fuse of the marina also trip.

After running tests, the cause is the Aft Cabin Air Conditioning (which I have been using non stop for 9 days).

Running the salon does not trip anything.

What could be the cause?

Hi, Amel Cousins.

I am trying to find replacement connectors for one of the many power distribution points in our boats.  They are the ones with the brass bolt that screws down onto a multitude of wires to distribute power from one source to multiple instruments, pumps, etc.  Specifically one that distributes 12V power from the 24-12V converters to the nav station instruments.  I've been searching online for electrical power distribution blocks, terminals, bus, etc and don't see anything like them.

 

Does anyone know what they are called, or the manufacturer, or a source?  There is limited space where mine failed, so I'd like to use a similar one for the replacement.  Otherwise I'll have to go with a stud and put rings on all the wires going to it.

I have an ICOM 710 that was original on the boat in 1999, and an AT 130? antenna tuner, also original equipment.  I can't receive any regular broadcasts (like Herb Hilgenberg in years past, Chris Parker, etc).  I was able to contact someone locally (a friend of a radio guy i had looking at it) transmitting on a know frequency, but didn't hear his reply.  I had the whole system checked by a radio guy, sent the radio to ICOM who said it was OK, and put an insulated backstay antenna when I replaced my rigging a few years ago.  Still no go.  I haven't had the tuner checked, I guess that'd be the next place to look.

Does anyone know a good radio technician in the Annapolis area?

Another issue is that my hearing is getting worse, especially when there's any background noise.  I'm wondering if it's worth spending any more money on SSB if I'm not going to be able to understand a thing anyway.  Has anyone used any kind of noise cancelling headphones to eliminate static or background noise?  Does it help?

I've used Iridium SatpHone for all at sea communications, and now have an InReach as well.

Philipp,

A dirty hull and especially a dirty prop, can easily reduce speed by 2 knots.  It would be a mistake to make changes to the engine before you tested with the bottom and prop clean.

Whatever else you decide, do NOT ever make changes to the injection pump!  That is a matter for experts ONLY.  I do not mean diesel engine experts, but Injection Pump Experts.  Changing timing on a diesel engine can cause very serious damage.
